I DREAM OF WIRES: HARDCORE EDITION Re-Issue Now Available

"I Dream of Wires: Hardcore Edition" trailer (09/2013 re-issue) from I Dream Of Wires on Vimeo.

"I Dream of Wires: Hardcore Edition
DVDs, BluRays and accessories available to order now:
http://sciencewithsynthesizers.com

Due to overwhelming demand, we're pleased to announce a repress of I DREAM OF WIRES: HARDCORE EDITION, our independent documentary epic exploring the history, demise and resurgence of the ultimate electronic music machine, the MODULAR SYNTHESIZER. Available to order now from our new SCIENCE WITH SYNTHESIZERS webshop (sciencewithsynthesizers.com), and coming soon to other select retailers.

I Dream of Wires: Hardcore Edition is a companion to the forthcoming feature-length documentary, I DREAM OF WIRES. An alternate/extended cut, I Dream of Wires: Hardcore Edition is 4 hours in length, custom made for hardcore modular synthesizer and electronic music fanatics. Originally intended as a limited-edition pressing, available exclusively to IndieGoGo and pre-order customers, interest and demand for the 4-hour Hardcore Edition has surged since copies were shipped in August 2013. It seems that a 4-hour documentary about modular synthesizers isn't as niche as we thought! While a 4-hours may seem excessive, feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, which has only reinforced our own feelings that the Hardcore Edition is a fun and compelling watch, one that deserves to be seen by a wider audience.

I Dream of Wires: Hardcore Edition includes an exclusive, lengthy historical primer, exploring the early development of modular synthesizers from pioneering companies Moog Music Inc. and Buchla and Associates.  From there, we find out what's happening now: the phenomenal resurgence of the modular synthesizer — exploring the passions, obsessions and dreams of people who have dedicated part of their lives to this esoteric electronic music machine. What started out as a "vintage-revival scene" in the '90s has grown into an underground phenomena with a growing market of modular obsessives craving ever more wild and innovative sounds and interfaces. Today, the modular synthesizer is no longer an esoteric curiosity or even a mere music instrument — it is an essential tool for radical new sounds and a bona fide subculture.

Interview subjects include musicians and producers Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), Gary Numan, Vince Clarke (Erasure), Morton Subotnick, Chris Carter (Throbbing Gristle), Daniel Miller, Carl Craig, Flood, cEvin Key (Skinny Puppy), James Holden, Factory Floor, Legowelt, John Foxx and Bernie Krause, as well as manufacturers  and modular industry leaders Doepfer, Modcan, Make Noise, Intellijel, Metasonix, Synthesis Technology/MOTM, Muffwiggler Mike, and Andreas Schneider.

I Dream of Wires Hardcore Edition to be Available For Purchase Again!

"I Dream of Wires: Hardcore Edition" 2013 official trailer from I Dream Of Wires on Vimeo.

If you missed the initial release and still want to pick up a copy, you are in luck!

via I Dream of Wires on Facebook:

"An announcement: We've had a long, hard think about it, and we've decided that we are going to make 'I Dream Of Wires: Hardcore Edition' DVDs and BluRays available to purchase again. Please give us about a week, and then you'll find a shiny new "BUY" button on our website. More details forthcoming.

This decision was reached largely due to an overwhelming demand. It seems that a 4-hour documentary about modular synthesizers isn't as niche as we thought! Comparatively, interest in the theatrical cut seems to be minimal, and so we've decided to put those plans on hold, and instead concentrate on IDOW as we feel it was meant to be: 4 hours, HARDCORE!

We know that there are some pre-order customers who will be disappointed that their "exclusive" edition is no longer so special. We understand, and apologize if you feel mislead. We hope you can take pride in knowing that this film wouldn't exist if it wasn't for pre-orders from people like you. Ultimately, we just need to do what is best for the film, for the modular community, and for us, which is to get this film seen by everyone who wants to see it.

Thanks for all of the interest and support!"

IDOW: Robert Wheeler & Allen Ravenstine Release EML 101 & 200 Recordings

Pere Ubu's Robert Wheeler & Allen Ravenstine, featured in the modular documentary I Dream of Wires, have released two LPs on 12" vinyl, City Desk & Farm Report, featuring the EML 101 & 200.  You can watch a clip from IDOW featuring them and their EML systems including a custom EML in this prior post.  A double CD is planned in the future.

"In the spring of 2012, Allen Ravenstine and Robert Wheeler travelled to historic Grant Avenue Studio in Hamilton, Ontario, to appear in I Dream of Wires, a film documentary about the role of modular synthesizers in electronic music.

Canadian Filmmaker Robert Fantinatto dedicated 20 minutes to an interview with the two pioneers of industrial electronics, and their choice of the unique EML Electrocomp synthesizer as a performance instrument in Pere Ubu.

Allen Ravenstine was a composer, patron and pioneer of the burgeoning Cleveland arts scene in the early 1970's. As synthesist with Pere Ubu, playing the EML-200 and later the EML-101, he earned international acclaim for his inspired use of industrial sound before retiring from popular music in the late 1980's. His approach to live performance - rejecting the traditional tonal keyboard for an intuitive wash of modulated noise - has been much imitated but rarely equaled.

Robert Wheeler (of Home & Garden) joined Pere Ubu in 1994, playing the EML-101 and a handmade Theremin. He is a relative of Thomas Edison - a birthright that led him to take a leading role in the Edison Birthplace Museum in Milan, Ohio. In January 2010, he accepted a Grammy Award on Edison's behalf..."

MERIDIAN7.NET

MERIDIAN7.NET is home to Lori Napoleon's creative works.  Lori and her work is featured in I Dream of Wires. Be sure to see this video on Lori if you haven't already.

Pictured above is the voice changer

"This module was originally used as a desktop hotel switchboard. It contains a circuit bent toy voice changer which creates octaves and 'robot sounds.' I have added a modification which allows variable sampling and playback speeds of audio fed into it."

Directly above is the sequencer

"Each side of the switchboard contains a Music From Outer Space ten step sequencer, with some added features such as external trigger inputs and pulse outs on each step. They can run independently or in sync with each other."

Directly above is the synthesizer

"The synthesizer currently contains VCS, VCF, and envelope modules by Ken Stone and Music From Outer Space. It also contains the MFOS noise cornucopia module for various percussive sounds. Sequencer is right below it."

For those that missed it, the Hardcore edition of the I Dream of Wires modular documentary has shipped! Most in the US and Canada have received their copies, including myself. :) Oversees should follow soon. There has been quite a few pics of the cover, but not any of the full package with the Hex Inverter IDOW batteryACID module and extras.  I just spotted this image via @RichardDevine and thought I'd post it.

"Awesome, our copy of I Dream of Wires arrives can't wait to watch this tonight!"

Note the four hour hard core edition was a limited release and is no longer available for order.  The theatrical release however is coming and should be out in the Fall.  You can track progress on the IDOW Facebook page.

1st Review of I Dream of Wires & Interview with Producer Jason Amm of Solvent

You'll find the full review and interview on Waveformless here.

"Having just finished watching an advance copy of the utterly breathtaking 4 hour 'Hardcore version' of the documentary I Dream of Wires (IDOW) one cannot help but be caught up with the sheer love and passion that flows throughout this film, and be enraptured by this eccentric and obsessive subculture. The film outlines the history of synthesis and electronic music and takes us on a journey from the pioneering work of Moog and Buchla to rise of digital synths and the near-death of monster modular systems. Then onto the movement away from laptops and software and the phenomenal global resurgence of modular systems that we have today."
