Introducing IOLabs Particles - Touchscreen Physics Simulator for Eurorack

video uploads by IOLabs

A new module from the makers of Flux. IOLabs Particles is currently live on Kickstarter here.

Video Playlist:
IOLabs Particles: Touchscreen Physics Simulator for Eurorack!
IOLabs Particles: Centered Gravity Quantize Demo
IOLabs Particles: Collision Physics Demo

"Live on Kickstarter from Jan 31st 2024!

Our new module offers the possibility to create music using our creative physics engine. Add particles, animated surfaces, portals, black holes and generate gates on collisions, CV output voltages & quantized melodies!

Each particle can have entirely unique physics parameters including acceleration, velocity, mass & gravity! All interact in your simulation to create collisions and XY positional data that can be mapped to generate musically useful gates, voltages & notes. Collisions for some particles may even be switched off so that they move freely around the screen without colliding with other simulation elements.

Multiple quantize zone maps can be used simultaneously to create chords and multiple particles may be mapped to the same output to allow transposition of melodies. CV outputs can be set to send a transposed voltage from another output for easy chord generation.

One particle can control all outputs or all particles (up to 50) can control one output, and anything in between. As with Flux, we have aimed to keep the module as flexible as possible. All simulations can be drawn from scratch using the touchscreen or simulations can also be crafted in fine detail by inputting exact values in the UI.

Multiple external and internal timed resets can be used simultaneously per particle to sync to external equipment or create repetition and complex rhythms as explored in the demo video.

Endless rhythmic and melodic possibilities await!

Please note - the module's hardware itself obeys the real world laws of physics as is in no danger of floating away from your case should you experiment with gravity values. It should however be held in place by mounting screws (just in case)."

FIRMWARE UPDATE: V1.07 BRINGS BOOLEAN LOGIC TO FLUX!

via IOLabs

"Open Beta V1.07 is now available for download!

The highlight feature of the new update is an extensive expansion of the auxiliary output modes including Boolean logic, clock utilities and CV threshold modes. In 1.07, Aux modes can also now be selected per step!

Other highlights include a new parameter LOOP enabling the selection of the start and end points for your sequence, copy/paste functionality, auto-load preset on startup and an extensive overhaul of the external clock modes. Full patch notes are included in the firmware zip!

We are extremely excited to share this update and hope it arrives just in time for some holiday season patching.

V1.07 is downloadable now from the IOLabs website: https://www.iolabs.co.uk/firmware"

Music Generated by IOLabs Flux for Sequential Prophet 10

video upload by Friendly Noise

"Flux is an incredible rhythm generating machine, but it can also make repetitive or evolving melodies. All melodies in the video are generated in real time by Flux. I used the Befaco VCMC voltage to midi converter to translate the analog triggers and voltages generated by Flux into midi messages that the Prophet 10 can understand.

On Mordax Data’s display you can follow the note triggering, with lower notes in the upper lane and progressively higher notes showing in the other three lanes.

Some delay and reverb were added in the DAW after recording."

Manipulating Melodies With IOLabs Flux - A Dark Christmas: Variations On The Jingle Bells Tune

video upload by Friendly Noise

"Flux is an incredible rhythm generating machine, but how good is Flux at making melodies? I have tried to answer this question in two videos. In this second part I’ll show how to manipulate melodies with Flux. Flux it not your traditional one note per step sequencer, but melodies are definitively programmable and more than just 'programmable'.

Everything you hear in the video is based on the notes of the first 4 bars of Jingle Bells.

Used in the video: Soma Pulsar 23, IOLabs Flux, 4ms Ensemble Oscillator, Spherical Sound Society Vortex Generator, Joranalogue Morph 4, and Strymon Nightsky.
Some EQ and compression were added in the DAW after recording.

Here is the first part: Making Melodies With IOLabs Flux - Is That Possible?"

Microtonal Roland SH-101 Landscape with Flux, Beads and Nightsky

video upload by Friendly Noise

"Sound from SH-101, triggers and notes from Flux, delay and pitch shifting from Beads, and reverb from Nightsky.

IOLabs Flux generates the 24 quarter notes used in the clip. Flux is also controlling the delay time changes with different AUX values per step. Triggers are set from 90% probability at the beginning and at the end of the clip, to 55% in the main part. This allows for constant changes in the note density.

Live recording. A little limiting and a second layer of reverb added in the DAW."

Party Ready Patterns With Bass Lines - A Happy Gathering of Flux, Metropolix and Pulsar 23

video upload by Friendly Noise

"The fourth collaboration between IOLabs Flux, the best trigger sequencer, and the Soma Pulsar 23 , arguably the most amazing if not the best drum machine ever made. The combination of sound quality, easy of use, open design, interconnectivity and interactivity makes the Soma a fantastic piece of musical gear, and which is more important, a real instrument to play with. The amount of control and flexibility that Flux puts in your hands can lead you to totally unexpected sonic landscapes, like you can see and heat in that video.
Barry at IOLabs and Vlad at Soma Instruments are real geniuses of our time.

Patch details are included in the video."

“Flux meets Jupiter-4 19 - That Pad…” by Friendly Noise

video upload by Friendly Noise

Roland Jupiter 4 and IO Labs Flux.

"The Jupiter 4 is recorded in mono, which makes the internal chorus very subtle. Reverb is added in Cubase to make the sound wider. There is no clipping in the recording chain. If you hear anything close to distortion, it’s all in the sound coming out of the Jupiter 4.

The Roland Jupiter 4 has been rediscovered and established as the most full of character among the Roland polyphonic synths. Although limited in number of voices and straight forward sound architecture, it shines with an unique sonic print which no other synth can emulate. There are lots of great video demos and information on the web, so that no detailed description will be provided here. But it’s important to mention some unique features which will be showed extensively in this video series:

- The Jupiter 4 filter goes into self oscillation. Big guys like Yamaha CS-80, Jupiter 8 or Oberheim OBX-a can’t.
- The LFO is fast enough to get into audio range.
- There is a very noticeable internal saturation when the VCA slider is raised.

Don’t expect nice bass sounds and classic analog leads. The Jupiter 4 is perfect for that, but this has already been done before in many records and internet demos. What you are about to hear is the extreme side of the sound. Be prepared for drones, massive low frequencies, cracking saturation, ultra fast notes and unusual scales. Many sounds will remind you of modular synthesizers, but they were all created by direct recording of the Jupiter 4. :-)

In fact, the VCO is switched off and you will be hearing only the self oscillating filter in almost 80% of the video series. Only in the last videos you will hear the VCO. That means that 80% of the sounds you will hear couldn’t be made with other classic polyphonic synths, unless the filter self oscillates.

Luckily this Jupiter 4 was modded with CV and gate inputs and outputs per voice (and then some). Using this level of control per voice you can use the Jupiter 4 as a vintage monophonic synth, or drive individual voices differently. For example, applying vibrato or slide per voice. In this video series, only three voices were used.o

The amazing sound of this Jupiter 4 can break the traditional boundaries specially when driven by the Temporal Modulation Synthesis sequencer Flux, made by IOLabs: https://www.tmsynthesis.com/
Flux is the most advanced tool for rhythm creation ever made. Ever. Trying to explain Flux is few words is not possible. Please look for information on the web."
