EXTREMELY RARE PPG 1002 for Tom + first ever shop tour!!!

"Here is a demo of the EXTREMELY RARE PPG 1002 for Tom. Plus a bonus first ever tour of the Foleytronics shop!!

For those that want to attempt to tune this synth, here is what worked for me:

The trimmer by the regulators is the CV offset; trim for 0v for the lowest key. This interacts with the CV v/oct, which is right above where the two shielded cables connect from the 20-pin keyboard connector. Trim this for 1v/oct, which can be measured at the switched oscillator CV input jack on the back of the instrument. Once these are set, you can move on.

The oscillators are tricky. They each have an initial frequency trim pot and a volt/octave trim pot. However, the initial frequency trimmer cannot be set willy nilly to A440 because their initial tuning frequency greatly affects the octave selection switches on the top panel. What I found to be most effective is to set the MASTER TUNE front panel pot to 0, the OCTAVE SLIDER to the left of the keyboard to the middle and then begin tuning. Note, every trim pot for each oscillator will affect the others for that oscillator so this is an exercise in extreme patience.

First, turn off keyboard control for OSC B and roughly center its front panel tuning pot; set its octave to +3 and put a folded piece of paper on middle C. You are now going to tune the octave selector for OSC A; this part is confusing as there is a trimmer to adjust the octave selection offset for BOTH oscillators, but only OSC B has an adjustment to “match” its octave selection with that of A. Thus, you have to use that trimmer to get OSC A perfect and then match B to A - the method that worked for me was to switch between octaves for OSC A and adjust the octave offset trimmer along with the initial frequency trim pot for A to get a perfect octave selection for OSC A over the OSC B drone.

After the OSC A octave adjustment, it’s time to adjust B’s octave adjustment. Set A to +3, and switch OSC B to +1; adjust for zero beating at the trimmer in the upper left corner of the board right at the edge of the PCB. Then, switch OSC B back to +3 and adjust its initial frequency for zero beating; repeat this until the octave selection is perfect for B.

Now, it’s time to adjust for V/octave for each oscillator. Sadly, this adjustment affects the octave center calibration we just did, so you’ll have to keep backtracking until it’s good. Adjust the V/octave trim pot for OSC A, which is directly to the left of the CV v/octave we did in the first step. You’ll now have to mess with the init. frequency for A along with the V/oct to get the oscillator to track correctly on the keyboard, but like I said earlier, you have now probably slightly messed up the octave selection so you will have to go back and do that again. Then, adjust the tuning of OSC A again and repeat this process until OSC A tracks perfectly and has good octave selection. I couldn’t really get the +4 octave to be perfect, but hey, it’s a prototype and is probably 50+ years old.

Now for OSC B; it’s very similar to A. Use the V/octave adjustment trimmer which is the lower left trim pot on the PCB along with the initial frequency trim pot to get B to track along the keyboard. Again, you’ll have to go back and adjust the octave selection, but that’s not as bad for B because its octave adjustment doesn’t mess up OSC A’s octave selection. At this point, you should be able to get OSC A and OSC B to track the keyboard and the octave selections should be there"

The PPG 1020 does have its own strengths. Digital modulation (for the oscillators) and – especially – the ring modulator are important technical improvements. And those 6 (!) oscillator waveforms are something special. Very unique sound I found it to go very well sequenced together with a VCO monosynth.

Rare PPG EVU - Wave 2.3 in a Rack

"Functionally the EVU is exactly a PPG Wave 2.3 in a rack but with the addition of individual panning and individual volume for each voice.

This particular EVU has quite a pedigree. Probably has travel mores miles than Lance Armstrong at this point. It was the demo unit that the North America PPG product specialist used back in the day at his presentations.
This very EVU has also been on several tours with the band SAGA.

We have updated all boards so now the guts of this machine could work straight up in a 2.3 (with 2.3 EPROMS).

With system 8.3 you can access all the parameters over MIDI or as originally envision by Mr Palm, the EVU can be remote controlled by a Waveterm.

This amazing instrument has received the full Synthropology™️ treatment.

There are a few visual imperfections. They are barely visibly in a normal studio (lighting) setting.

There are some minor scratches on the front panel, but it is hard to even capture them in the pictures. Nevertheless we tried to make the imperfections visible as much as possible in the pictures for full disclosure.

That being said, this PPG EVU presents really well and looks beautiful and very potent.

More importantly, it works perfectly."

"PPG WAVE 2.3 Synthesizer Keyboard - for restoration. Sold AS-IS. I know nothing about these. I did plug it in and it powers on. Sometimes 3 red light came on and after I pushed a few buttons to try to scroll it would only show black blocks on LED screen (see photos) I could never get it to change on LED screen. All the keys spring back up. There are some uneven keys (see photo) It has scratches. The silver plate that holds circuit boards straight was loose so I put some black tape on edge to hold circuit boards. (see last photo) I do not know the history of this keyboard."

PPG wave 2.2 vs 2.3 are there any differences?

"I used to have a PPG wave 2.3 and I also got a 2.2 later on. Then I had to decide, which to keep and I compered them to each other. I prefered the 2.2. In this video you can hear some dfferences. The 2.3 sounds in many patches weaker and the panorama settings of the voices behaves sometimes strange. I suppose that the unit has some slightly issues, althought it got a full service and overhaul. The 2.2 didn't get any service at all. Also the envelopes seem to behave slowlier on the 2.3. When regariding the specs, the transient sounds in the PPG Wave 2.3 played with 12 bit or with non-linearly scaled 8 bit. The 2.2 played with 8 bit. Both PPGs used the same DA converters. Both used the same filter SSM 2044. In both PPG i had the latest OS 8.3 developed by Hermann Seibt. So I wonder why there are sound differences. My thesis is, that the 2.2 should not sound different from the 2.3. In this video it does. Now I only have the 2.2 in my studio, I sold both, the 2.3 and also the EVU, which you can see in this video."

"Short Demo of 7 factory and custom PPG sounds reprogrammed on the Groove Synthesis 3rd Wave together with my friend Till Kopper. Till is the frist owener in Germany with a 3rd Wave and he lives only 20 km from my home. So we meet regulary to play synths. We tried out how the 3rd WAVE is capable to adopt the classic sound of the PPG wave. I have a 2.2 in my studio and it was quiet interesting, hard at the same time to recreate some classic PPG sounds on the 3rd wave. Our impression is, that they can sound very close. The PPG wave has some mistakes in the sound which made it legendary, so over the whole keyboard the sounds are different with aliasing in higher octaves an brizzelng in deep registrations. It is very hard to get this effect on the 3rd wave, but we think that the guys from Groove Synthessi did a great job to get the 3rd wave as a succeedor of the old PPG.
