Introducing Beetlecrab.audio - Makers of Vector and Tempera

via Beetlecrab.audio
Dear friends,
as hot summer months are slowly passing by, our Prague workshop has been pretty busy working on all axes. Since there's now two products to care for, there's more things to do, more PCB wiring and more code to siphon through, but there's a silver lining in that when we're too deep in one thing and need some respite, there's always something to do on the other :)
We are Beetlecrab.audio
Another thing we're slowly dealing with is the inscrutable situation about our branding, which we have gotten ourselves into. Vector, VectorSynth Tempera, TemperaSynth Vector, Vectora Synth Temper. It's a mess. To get out of all this confusion we decided to adopt an umbrella for both existing and new upcoming projects: beetlecrab.audio. We couldn't quite figure out a suitable name but many of you started using this, so let's go with it. For now the website is a simple crossroad and will be improved over time. Both Vector and Tempera newsletters will be merged into one at some point, so if you're subscribed to both you may have received this email twice. Please ignore the other.
Now to the actual news. There's two parts here -- an update about how Tempera production is going, and announcement of the new Vector v2.9.1 firmware update. Let's start with -
Tempera Production Update
New upgrades
There's a few changes made to the hardware that we're comfortable sharing, now that they are verified. First, a great quality of life improvement: the TRS MIDI sockets are compatible both with Type A and Type B wiring ! This means that you don't have to worry and fiddle with unmarked adapters -- both types will work.
Next, we were still a bit unhappy with the powder coat finish of the metal case. It's difficult to get right: each attempt at different color and paint structure takes a lot of time to test and verify because at least a piece of metal needs to be painted and sent to us for examination, and it takes even longer because of course the metal case manufacturer doesn't have all the paints in stock, and sometimes they have to buy a whole bottle just to use a few drops. A sample palette exists but as we already learned with Vector, these give some idea but in the end look nothing like what you think on the actual metal, on the bends, crevices and so on.
Having said all that, I think we found and verified a finish that we're really happy with . It's less glossy and has a finer and more granular (hah) structure. It's very nice to the touch and I think looks much better. See for yourself, how the light interacts with the old vs new powder coat on top. Noticeable are also the beautifully laser etched graphics. (Tempera in old finish, plate on top in new finish. The light is angled in such a way to highlight the grain, the new finish is in fact even blacker than the old.)

Superbooth 2023: Tempera Granular Synth From The Vector Synth People
video upload by sonicstate
"We spoke to Andre Sklenar of VectorSynth about their new product, Tempora. Tempora is a granular synthesizer and sampler that has a total global pool of 4000 samples, with 16 voices of polyphony, per-voice filters, and per-voice modulators.
The basic operation is that you have eight tracks or samples that can be short or up to 10-12 seconds long, and you put in a note and an emitter that tells it what pitch to play and where the grains come from. Each emitter can have a different size, density, and color coding, and you can modulate the parameters of each.
The interface provides good utility in terms of where the grains are pulled, and there is no waveform, so users are encouraged to listen and explore with their fingers. The Tempora is PC powered, and if you want, you can use a power bank. VectorSynth plans to start doing pre-orders as soon as possible, and the price is yet to be determined.

Tempera: A New Granular Instrument
video upload by Red Means Recording
"This video is sponsored by the makers of Tempera: http://playtempera.com
Tempera is a new granular instrument by the makers of the Vector Synth (https://www.vectorsynth.com/). It features 8 sample slots, each represented by a verticle column, that can be played back polyphonically, 4 granular emitters, envelopes, lfos, a filter, and a reverb.
I've been alpha-testing this unit and have made some content for it. Check it out in person at Superboooth 2023."

Vector -- MPE Firmware Update 2.8
via Vector
We have MPE

When it comes to synthesizers, there is never enough expression. Long anticipated and carefully prepared firmware update 2.8 brings us into the family of MPE capable instruments.
The new features are also available to non-MPE controllers, and the parameters can be routed to mono or poly aftertouch, pitch bend, modwheel, key velocity and others. So, how does this work with Vector? Let’s press Enable MPE and find out.
What it does
Vector relies on immediate visual representation of what’s going on. Slowly or rapidly evolving, changing timbres are synthesized by mixing and blending together four sound corners by moving a mix point per voice along parametric trajectories or envelope-driven segments.
The new firmware 2.8 exposes the trajectory and synthesis parameters:
Horizontal and vertical position of the mix point
Suborbit speed and size
Amplitude and pitch
Filter cutoff and resonance
Amount of phase modulation etc. during synthesis
Vibrato and tremolo speeds and depths
Each note travels a different trajectory by controlling their horizontal and vertical position offsets.
Every suborbiter can have a separate radius and speed. Works with all trajectory types.
How is it configured?
The Routing Table
The whole routing configuration is arranged into a neat table — controllers to the left, destination parameters to the right. Each route can have an individually tuned translation function to deal with situations where 1:1 mapping is not enough to achieve nuanced expression. A small live preview thumbnail is provided for each destination.
A single source can transmit to multiple parameters scaled in different ways with different operators.
Each routing configuration is saved along with a patch, and a couple of tools are provided to ease routing organization between patches.
With new features come new responsibilities. Even though the new routing table is very intuitive, there are a few things to note in Vector’s handy manual. Grab the 2.8 update in online or pdf format.

Vector Synth Firmware Update v2.7.5
Vector Synth gets an update.
Even those super early birds who trusted us with making it all work can enjoy the latest DSP magic.
And so another season brings another firmware update: the focus of v2.7.x is implementing several most requested features, as well as improvements to the Orbiter engine and a new filter.
The two of the three we are most proud of are the new Orbiter shapes: N-Gon and Pulse [pictured in order]. Already existing lissajous-based formulas provide smooth timbre changes, while the new shapes are designed for sharp and intricate thumping rhythms, almost to the point of timbre sequencing.
Another is the introduction of a new Formant filter [bottom pic], which brings us up to 5 filter types, up to 4 filters per voice, in a max concurrent total of 64!
Two brand new Orbiter shapes: N-gon and Pulse
New filter: Formant
Increased available Orbiter speeds
Adjustable knob speed
Adjustable pitch bend range
Added an option to set the default preset and BPM
Better MIDI Bank Select to load patches support
Damper and Sostenuto CC support
MIDI Through support
MIDI Continue support
"Dot" Delay Time added
Double-tap on a preset to load
Added an option to hide incoming MIDI CC popups
Screen brightness adjustment
Various fixes and small improvements"
And an update on production & shipping:
"As we’re going forward with our 6th batch to date, we continue to improve the process, the newest nerdy addition being scannable barcodes assigned to each Vector’s serial number sticker. We’re still in awe how much fun it is to scan a barcode during the QA procedure rather than type serial numbers by hand :)
Over the past half year we also managed to do some small upgrades to the lab, built tool organizers and revamped the place in general. Even though the component situation is still challenging, all required components for the whole batch are stockpiled and ready to be assembled into fresh Vectors."
