Tech Talk: Vitalic (Electronic Beats TV)

video upload by Telekom Electronic Beats TV

"Electronic Beats returns with another Tech Talk, this time we took a trip to Paris to visit the studio of Pascal Arbez aka Vitalic / Dima. Pascal initially began his career on French Techno label Choice under his Dima alias, releasing a series of original works as well as remixing the likes of Daft Punk, BjΓΆrk, Royksopp and Paul Kalkbrenner, a striking sign of his ability to craft greatness in the studio.

He went on to then launch his alter-ego Vitalic and released numerous albums and EP’s for Different/[PIAS] Recordings as well as material for Jennifer Cardini’s Correspondant, his ‘Poney’ EP on DJ Hell’s Gigolo Records and of course his own Citizen Records imprint.

Vitalic also forms the duo KOMPROMAT with Rebeka Warrior (ex Sexy Sushi), is currently celebrating twenty years of his career and the release of his fifth album DISSIDÆNCE. We took a trip to find out what keeps this powerhouse producer stirring after decades in the game and discover all of the machines and technologies that were used to create his impressive and extensive back catalogue and his new album 'Dissidaence'."

Vermona DRM

via this Reverb listing

"I had this beautiful drum machine shipped over from Bulgaria in 2023 and it’s likely the only original DRM in this good of condition in the US. Has the original leather briefcase that goes with it as well.

There’s not much content on this machine online (and there are very few left in good condition) so I just uploaded a demo/jam on YouTube (see below). And here’s my elevator pitch: The 1987 Vermona DRM is THE drum machine to buy if you want the analog sounds of the drum machines from the 70’s combined with the sequencing control of drum machine’s introduced in the 80’s. The DRM was Vermona’s answer to Roland’s 808. It has a 32 step sequencer, with all 32 steps visible and controllable at once for any one of the 12 analog drum sounds, which is incredible and a very unique/rare workflow. On top of that each sound has a dedicated volume control on a fader which makes it super interactive and quick, therefore being great for performance as well.

I’ve spent the past couple years programming drums on either this or my Elektron Syntakt. There’s more flexiblity on the Syntakt obviously but I still could never get my Syntakt to sound as “analog” as the DRM. Even with the analog circuits on the Syntakt, nothing sounded as good in a mix as the DRM.

And it just looks so cool.

I’m selling both the DRM and the Syntakt because I’m ready for a change, specifically wanting to do more with live drums.

Only 'negative' note with the DRM is that I could never figure out how to get the MIDI to work. I have the latest version eprom chips (ver 10) installed but it still always acted weird when I tried to input MIDI clock. Could be my mistake but it also could be an issue with the MIDI circuitry, not sure. Oh and the “cymbal” circuit likely needs a recap as it doesn’t produce sound all of the time. This is a recent development but hasn’t bothered me because I didn’t use the cymbal sound much anyway since I prefer the sound of the open hi-hat."

Vermona ER 9, in Collectors Condition w/ Extras

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
video upload by andykwiatkowski

via this Reverb listing

"I have this beautiful Vermona ER 9 drum machine for sale. It's in perfect collector's conditions. Case, guarantee, users manual, cable 5 din to jack included.

Pure analog sound. Everything works. One thing is the cowbell sound makes constant high pitch noise. It's quite common in these machines and easily fixable.

All sounds have individual volume control (like a KR-55 or Elka Drummer One), but rhythms can be combined by pressing multiple buttons, and (unlike for example the 60s/70s Roland beat boxes) when you press in one button the others do not pop out – so you can gradually layer up rhythms or remove them one by one from the mix."

Register ®️ (0-Coast + Timeline // Perfourmer + H90 // TR-6S // Nymphes // Squarp sequencer)

video upload by 2-Minute Warning

"I really wanted to make use of a lot of MIDI effects of the Hapax hardware sequencer in this jam! πŸ˜ƒ
So nearly all of the sequences you'll here coming from the 0-Coast, Perfourmer and Nymphes, have been recorded with very few notes.
The rhythmic and chords richness are mainly coming from the onboard MIDI effects. Thus:

🎸 BASS (0-Coast):
The track starts with the 0-Coast playing a simple pattern, which gets a bit more complex when I add more PULSES on the EUCLID effect of the Hapax. There's also a RANDOM MIDI effect on this track which from time to time, transposes some notes to 1 or 2 octaves.

🎢 ARP (Perfourmer):
The Perfourmer then gets introduced progressively, sequenced by Track 2 of the Hapax where actually, no notes where recorded! Every note you are hearing are being generated in real-time by the REGISTER MIDI effect. I also used the SCALER effect for the generated notes not to go out of scale πŸ˜‰

🎹 CHORD STABS (Nymphes):
I used the RANDOM + HARMO + SCALER MIDI effects here to transform the single notes recorded to the cool CHORD STABS!

πŸ₯ DRUMS (TR-6S):
The drum parts are played by the TR-6S using only the Analog Circuit Behavior engine (i.e. no samples used) for the drum sounds. I didn't use the TR-6S' sequencer here but the Hapax, in order to be able to swap between different patterns on only one machine (Hapax)."

New Room ☮️ (Vermona Perfourmer + H90 + Pill // Make Noise 0 Coast + Timeline // Squarp Hapax)

video upload by 2-Minute Warning

"In this jam, I didn't really want to set a time limit 😊 It's actually quite a simple setup with 2 synths (Perfourmer and 0-Coast) playing in monophonic and the TR-6S taking care of the DRUM parts (no samples used here, only the Roland's - ACB Analog Circuit Behavior - analog modeling engine).

I've used the individual outputs of the Perfourmer where the main outputs are playing voices 1&2 (BASS) and outputs of voices 3&4 are going into the H90 and Pill pedals. Even though the 4 voices are playing the same notes, voices 3&4 seems to play like a PAD especially when I enable the PITCHFUZZ effect of the H90!

As for the 0-Coast which is taking care of the PLUCKS, I did some patching mainly to add some variations (modulation of some parameters using the S&H LFO) on the sound."

Emotional Waste - ambient electronica - Vermona Perfourmer, Moog Muse, Polybrute12, Summit & Piano

video upload by copenhagennoiselab

"I was connecting stuff in my temporary home office studio setup yesterday and had brought out my Vermona Perfourmer (mk1) from storage. So while setting it up I recorded a simple 4 bar thing as midi and let it drive the Perfourmer synthesizer. I had it running for a few hours while I was connecting midi and audio for the other synths I have in the home office and I never got bored of it. So today I decided to quickly add some piano and other synths to it to see if I could make it into something more... I dunno if the last part was succesful though, but at least I got it documented...

The main synth is the Vermona Perfourmer playing a chord structure thing. The second synth that appears is a lead from the Expressive E Osmose followed by a bass from the Novation Summit and another soft lead from the Moog Muse. Then a chord with some morphee filtering from the Arturia Polybrute 12 before the Piano comes in. (Just another piano improvisation more or less). At the end I start to mess up the Vermona thing and I also added a Drummer track in Apple Logic Pro."

DRM1 MKIV: misuse or genius hack?

video upload by vermonagear

"Think you've tried all the settings on the DRM1 MKIV and uncovered every sound? Think again.

In this video, we 'misused' some channels to create sounds they weren’t designed for.

We used the SNARE channel to make a kick drum.
The snare sound? A mix of the HIHAT channel and DRUM1.
For the octave bass, we combined the KICK and DRUM channels.

Everything was loop-recorded in Logic Pro using the pads on the ‪@ArturiaOfficial‬ KeyLab MKII—with no extra effects added.

What do you think—total nonsense or worth exploring further? Let us know!

Buchla & Friends: VERMONA Eurorack Demo Setup

video upload by vermonagear

"Join us as we showcase our Eurorack setup at the *2025 Buchla & Friends event in Los Angeles on January 25 and 26*. This setup features most of our current modules, including the meloDICER and our latest addition, BASS|DRUM.

For this demonstration, we patched a simple subtractive voice using the uniCYCLE oscillator, twinVCFilter, and twinVCAmp. Two channels of fourMative CONTOURS create an Attack-Decay envelope to modulate the filter and VCA. A second uniCYCLE serves as the modulation source, controlling the frequency of the first oscillator.

No surprises here: the BASS|DRUM module delivers powerful bass drum sounds.

The twinCUSSION+ module handles additional percussion duties. Its first channel is used for various percussive elements, while the second acts as a snare drum. We also use its noise generator, combined with the second channels of twinVCFilter and twinVCAmp, to produce hi-hat sounds.

All sequencing is handled by the meloDICER for melodies and the randomRHYTHM module for rhythm parts. We added effects using Logic Pro for an extra layer of depth.

What do you think of our demonstration? Share your thoughts in the comments below! Don’t forget to subscribe to our channel for more content.
