THE ELECTRONIC ARTS OF LIGHT AND SOUND

Anyone recognize the gear in the third image below?

Update: it appears they are early Wavemakers. And via vco2vcf2vca in the comments: "The white-paneled units look similar to the ones at [link]"

"THE ELECTRONIC ARTS OF LIGHT AND SOUND
By Ronald Pellegrino
1983 First Edition
Rare early book on merging music synthesis with visuals
Near mint condition in plastic booksleeve
About the nicest copy of this book you can find."

The following is a decription for the book from Amazon:

"Sound and light explode, then whisper - partners in an eternal dance. Interwove rhythms burst into vivid images in the and ear. Uproarious hues flash, shimmer, and fade....

And all of this is under your control, thanks to modern electronic wizardry. Sound and light synthesis has coaxed some of man's most visionary images from his imagination, and now Ronald Pellegrino provides you with the tools to make the most of this miracle of technology. In one compact volume he integrates electronic history, theory, composition, and performance techniques. From this foundation you can launch yourself into the boundless realm of the electronic arts.

Pelligrino explains how to tap the creative power of real-time composition, the 'glue' of sound and light synthesis. You'll discover visual music as it is expressed through oscillographics and film, videographics, and laser light forms. Electronic instruments are viewed as both live performance and studio instruments, opening up infinite possibilities.

Wave theory fundamentals - the heart of the electronic arts - initiate a guided tour of the electronic arts studio that shows you how to design your own. Pellegrino describes the instruments you'll find there, shows you how to operate them, and explains their interactions and how to use them to their full potential. He also highlights the computer as an essential component in the system, as a generator and controller of sound and light waves."

Metasonix R-System 1 Voice Demo

Published on Sep 6, 2013 7numan7·77 videos

"This is a demo of the Metasonix R-51 (Distortion/VCA), R-53 (Pulser/Ringmod) and R-55 (Thyratron VCO) synthesizer modules, which all use tubes. There are two R-51s, one R-53 and two R-55s being used in this patch.

The R-System is being controlled and processed by a Meng Qi Music 'Cocoquantus' looping delay/sampler + ribbon and antenna controller. The output of the Cocoquantus is being processed by a Knas Ekdahl Moisturizer spring reverb. And the Moisturizer's output is being processed by a Wavemakers 255R dual phase shifter (which is switched on and off throughout the video, so that you can hear how the Metasonix modules sound by themselves without the phaser effect added).

Enjoy!"

Wavemakers Site Update - Dr. Terry Kincaid

via John Loffink

"Announcing a very exciting update for the Wavemakers web site. For the first time ever, photos of Dr. Terry Kincaid with his Wavemakers instruments in the 1970s, including an early prototype."

You can find the pics and history on the rare Wavemakers synthesizer on the Wavemakers history page.

"Terry Kincaid has been described as a unique individual and a genius by people who knew him well. Though his degrees were in music, he taught himself electronics well enough to make synthesizers that were competitive with contemporaries such as Moog and Arp. Terry even taught himself German so he could converse with German customers. In his later years he built computers from scratch. What Terry may have lacked was marketing and business sense, selling his synthesizers for little more than they cost in parts, and with little margin to pay for his labors."

Be sure to see the rest of the Wavemakers site as well if you haven't already. It's a fascinating bit of synth history.

Peter Forrest's A-Z of Analogue Synthesisers books

via this auction

"A complete two-volume set of the most comprehensive encyclopaedia of analogue synths and keyboards in the world - direct from the author. Now that all completely mint copies of the A-M part are sold out, I'm selling sets which include an A-M which is not mint...

"The A-M is a printers' run-on copy, so had no serial number, but I have written that in it, and the N-Z is serial number 855. Both books will be signed by the author - if you want a particular dedication, please say when you pay.

The original A-M was produced in 1994, and then re-written and expanded in 1998. There are probably nearly twice as many words crammed in to the second edition as there were in the first. The second edition has 320 pages, 16 of which are full colour, while the original edition only had 240 pages. There's a whole lot of extra information about EMS, Moog, and many other manufacturers; a greatly improved index, and a new index to the musicians mentioned in the book. So if you're into, say, Tangerine Dream, you can find the 25 pages on which they're mentioned; Tim Blake, 8 pages; and even Tim Buckley on two.

The first edition was printed in a run of 2000, and 2000 copies of this revised edition were also printed. This second edition has been officially out of print for well over a year now, so is impossible to buy via any bookseller like Amazon.

The original N-Z was printed in 1996, in a run of 2000, and then the second revised edition (of 3000) was printed in 2003. It has 384 pages, including 16 in full colour. Please check the photos to see the sort of coverage you will get of rare, obscure instruments like the Syntons and Wavemakers or ultra-famous offerings like the Rolands and Yamahas.

The total number of words in these two books is probably over half a million. With hundreds of illustrations, charts, etc., the whole package provides a comprehensive guide to analogue synths, organs, electric pianos, theremins, etc., up to 1998 for ones beginning A-M, and 2003 for the N-Zs. The books have been well-reviewed in magazines all round the world, by people as knowledgeable as Mark Vail and Gino Robair, and enjoyed by some of the best-known names in electronic music, such as Fatboy Slim, Hans Zimmer, Herbie Hancock, Aphex Twin, Chemical Brothers, Depeche Mode, and Adrian Utley of Portishead.

Who's selling: my name's Peter Forrest. I've been writing about synths, keyboards, effects and recording gear for over 20 years now, and for 14 years I have been running an internet auction called VEMIA (Vintage Electric Musical Instrument Auctions) which specialises in synths, drum machines, effects, and so on. Please check my eBay feedback to see that you can bid with confidence. Feel free to email me any questions."

I have a copy of these books. They are absolutely amazing. Highly, highly recommended. This is the ultimate analog synth reference book. This is also listed in the Synth Books section.

General Purpose MIDI Controllers Update

Just a follow-up to this post. There's a lengthy update to the thread here for anyone interested.

Updates include:
The Virtual MIDI Piano Keyboard
"Another customization that you may want to tweak is the keyboard mapping. The default layout maps about two and half octaves for the QWERTY alphanumeric keyboard, but there are some more definitions in the data directory, adapted for other international layouts. You can even define your own mapping using a dialog box available in the Edit->Keyboard map menu. There are also options to load and save the maps as XML files. The last loaded map will be remembered the next time you start VMPK. In fact, all your preferences, selected MIDI bank and program, and the controller values will be saved on exit, and restored when you restart VMPK the next time."

The Scala Home Page
"Scala is a powerful software tool for experimentation with musical tunings, such as just intonation scales, equal and historical temperaments, microtonal and macrotonal scales, and non-Western scales. It supports scale creation, editing, comparison, analysis, storage, tuning of electronic instruments, and MIDI file generation and tuning conversion. All this is integrated into a single application with a wide variety of mathematical routines and scale creation methods. Scala is ideal for the exploration of tunings and becoming familiar with the concepts involved. In addition, a very large library of scales is freely available for Scala and can be used for analysis or music creation."

And Microtonal Synthesis, home of the Wavemakers modular synthesizer.
