Buchla Easel V Tutorials: Episode 1 - Finding your way
Buchla Easel V Tutorials: Episode 2 - Modulation and Control Sources
Buchla Easel V Tutorials: Episode 3 - Exploring the additional features in Buchla Easel V
"French music software & hardware creators Arturia have created a series of tutorial videos demonstrating the features and functions of their recently released Buchla Easel V, a software recreation of Don Buchla's legendary Music Easel.
The in-depth tutorial - hosted by Glen Darcey - is presented in 3 parts, covering its layout, modulation and control sources, as well as the additional new features.
Recreating the leftfield brainchild of visionary synth legend Don Buchla, the Buchla Easel V maintains the unique, inspirational approach to sound creation that made the original a true cult icon. Over and above the standard parameters synth enthusiasts expect to find on an instrument, the Buchla Easel V provides a recreation of Don's innovative slider system. Each slider provides a unique voice, overtone, animation, shape, or color to the sound, opening up an exciting, fresh way of sculpting sound, and giving even seasoned professionals a chance to rediscover the joy of synthesis.
Authentically recreating Buchla's experimental, West coast sound was no small feat, and pushed the limits of TAEⓇ: Arturia's exclusive analog emulation technology. The incredibly accurate modeling - mapping out and reproducing the nuanced response of every analog component within the instrument - makes Buchla Easel V a truly cutting edge product. This level of intense detail means that each voice of polyphony requires around 20% of an i7's processor power.
While famed for the accuracy of their software emulations, Arturia also rework their instruments to include optional features that would have been impossible on the original instruments. Arturia have created many subtle improvements to the interface of the Buchla Easel V, in the true spirit of Buchla's legacy. They have also included an extra, ground-breaking synth engine: Gravity. Using an interactive physics engine to create animated, organic sounds, the addition of this powerful new synth engine makes Buchla Easel V a synth that's truly out of the world.
Buchla Easel V is one of four new stunning vintage instrument recreations that are included in V Collection 6 - Arturia's groundbreaking retro synth and keyboard package. Containing 21 instruments, each modeled after a keyboard that changed the face of music as we know it. Within V Collection, you'll find meticulously modeled analog synths, digital powerhouses, incredible performance keyboards, acoustic and electric pianos, organs, a string machine, and even a sampler.
Breathing life back into the most iconic keyboard instruments of all time, V Collection is the ultimate creativity launchpad, and an essential studio tool for the modern music producer."

"Multi-award winning music software & hardware developer Arturia have released a tutorial series on the finer details of CMI V, their recently unveiled recreation of the Fairlight CMI: the 'mother of all samplers' that changed the face of contemporary music production.
Presented by Glen Darcey, this 4 part video series covers the key concepts of the instrument, letting users quickly familiarize themselves with its features and functions. This series includes a quick tour of the instrument, shows you how to load and edit samples, and explores the new Time and Spectral synthesis possibilities.
While ludicrously powerful and undeniably revolutionary, the original Fairlight CMI was typical of early digital instruments: sluggish, temperamental, and notoriously difficult to program. Despite these quirks, whole studios based their sound around the unparalleled capabilities of this revolutionary sampler, and many now-legendary record producers made the CMI their signature mix ingredient.
Reborn for the modern production age, CMI V has been revamped, reworked, and reimagined to create an equally ground-breaking instrument, built to inspire today’s musicians just as the original did since its 1979 release. Building on the classic sampler functions that are now second nature to most 21st century musicians and producers, and true to their form of revitalizing retro instruments with powerful new features, Arturia have created a living, breathing, true synth & sampling instrument.
Sculpt harmonics and gain access to vast waveform controls with the Spectral Synth; import audio and create your own personalized sample-scapes; and take command of 32 harmonic sound envelopes in the additive Time Synth. CMI V is truly the triumphant return of a giant, a fitting tribute to the monumental sampler that inspired generations of musicians, and turned the whole industry on its head.
CMI V is one of four new stunning vintage instrument recreations that are included in V Collection 6 - Arturia's groundbreaking retro synth and keyboard package. What makes MicroLab so unique?
THE KEYS
MicroLab features the same professional slim-keys as their industry standard KeyStep controller. The keybeds found on budget controllers are often not very inspiring, but the 25 expressive, velocity-sensitive keys on MicroLab are simply a joy to play. The hold button gives you instant sustain, and by holding the shift key, you can access the “Chord” mode, letting you program in a chord and replay with just one finger.
THE FEATURES
The rubberized shell protects MicroLab from and bumps and scrapes when you’re on the move, and also features a recess that perfectly fits the USB cable, letting you store or pack it easily. MicroLab also includes capacitive mod and pitch controls that work in the same way that touchscreens do, these also let you swipe through and select presets with a tap. You can also quickly switch MIDI channels via the dedicated knob and numbered keys.
THE SHAPE
Arturia have designed this controller to work with you, and not get in the way. Because the cable is recessed, you can push it right up against other gear in your studio without cables getting in the way. It’s the width of the average plane and train tray table, and the shell stops it from sliding around. The keys are also recessed slightly into the body, nothing sticks out, so there’s nothing to catch when you slip it into your backpack.
THE SOFTWARE
MicroLab includes 3 great software titles for free:
Analog Lab Lite
Explore 600 fantastic presets taken from Arturia’s award winning V Collection series. Analog and digital synths, classic organs and pianos.

New Synths in V Collection 7
Synthi V
BRITISH SILVER MACHINE
Synthi V completely captures the spirit of the unique analog synth that burst out of ‘70s London to inspire the entire emerging electronic music world—and it has new superpowers to inspire your world today.
Synthi V brings you all the experimental excitement of EMS’ legendary 3-oscillator analog synths—now infused with thoroughly modern enhancements. Venture beyond unusual lead and bass sounds to create soundscapes and sci-fi effects ranging from beautiful to bizarre and everything in between.
The British-born EMS family of synths—featuring the sonically identical Synthi AKS and VCS3—were among the first to distill modular synthesizer functionality into a more portable form. Where most competitive designs like the Minimoog sacrificed flexibility to size and simplicity, EMS retained a modular heart through the genius of one of the first matrix patchbays to grace a synth. That additional versatility led to more experimentation outside of melodic norms and into the more electronic realms of psychedelia and sci-fi effects. Cue Pink Floyd’s “On the Run” from “The Dark Side of the Moon” LP.
Synthi V is the perfect evolution of the synth that turned a lot of heads. Now you can use it to turn some heads of your own.
Main Features
A component-level model of the EMS Synthi AKS
3 oscillators with waveform mix, noise generator, 18 dB/oct resonant filter, output section with spring reverb modelling

Advanced joystick automation module for modulating parameters in a 2D space
Matrix pin amounts modulations possibilities (with 4 independent groups)
10 effects, Reverb Phaser, Flanger, Chorus, Overdrive, Delay, ...
Up to 4 voices of polyphony
Over 250 factory presets
CZ V
PHASE DISTORTION CULT CLASSIC
The budget synth that became a legend in its own right. The instrument that brought the digital synth revolution to the masses is now at your command.
A simpler kind of powerful digital synthesis
Released in 1984, the CZ-101 was Casio’s answer to the wildly popular Yamaha DX7. It was significantly less expensive and infinitely easier to program than its rival. Instead of frequency modulation, Casio’s phase distortion (PD) used various user-selected waveforms to modulate the timing of simple carrier waves at the cycle level in order to create more complex wave shapes. This simplified form of digital synthesis made it comparatively easy to perfect a wide variety of timbres spanning warm pads, natural percussion, buzzy digitalia, sci-fi effects and even analog synths. While PD could sound similar to FM, it also had a unique sonic signature all its own.
The CZ sound helped propel artists like Salt-N-Pepa, Was (Not Was), and Vince Clarke into the spotlight. Let’s add your name to the list.
Classic Casio Phase Distorsion
+ cutting-edge Arturia modeling
= infinite sonic possibilities for you
Imagine a virtual instrument that realistically models every nuance of the CZ-101—and with four times the polyphony and zillions more presets. What if it gave you an intuitive graphic interface that unlocked of all the hidden jewels in this unique digital synth? And what if it now had additional envelopes, filters, LFOs, effects, and extensive beat-sync-to-host parameters? Oh, and what if you could interconnect all that via a new super-flexible modulation matrix? We’ve faithfully reproduced the instrument that brought ‘80s pop to new heights.
Yeah... we did that!
Main Features
Two synthesis lines and independent noise source
All CZ-101/CZ-1000 original parameters
8 original waveform and custom waveform editor

"MicroFreak receives new oscillator and more in 2.0 firmware update
On top of announcing KeyLab Essential 88 and KeyStep Pro at NAMM 2020, French audio pioneers Arturia have also revealed a surprise update to their incredibly popular MicroFreak digital synth.
The MicroFreak 2.0 update adds several exciting new features and functions, refines some existing ones, and fixes a few minor bugs.
New Features
New Noise oscillator: morph between particle noise, white noise, and a metallic noise that’s reminiscent of a synth cymbal. An exciting new voice that will open up powerful new drum and percussion possibilities in MicroFreak.
Chord Mode: by holding the Paraphony button and playing some notes, you program the chord, then replay the shape with a single key.
Scale quantization: In the Utility settings, you can activate scale quantization to your favorite scale. When activated, the “white notes” on the keyboard play whichever scale you have selected. No more wrong notes!
Sequencer streamlining: in 2.0 firmware update, you’re now able to easily copy Pattern A to Pattern B in an instant.
Matrix initialize: before 2.0 firmware update, if you wanted to clear the Matrix of all routings, you’d have to manually do it. Now you can just hold the Shift and perform a long press on the encoder, and it will clear!
64 New Presets: Loads of exciting sounds to explore using the new oscillator and features.
Improvements
MicroFreak now displays visual feedback even when Local Control is off.
The synth’s Local Control now also translates USB to MIDI Out.
The release of currently playing presets are now cleared when switching to a new one.
The Record LED now blinks on each beat, instead of on 16ths.
Thanks to MicroFreak’s digital mind, the team at Arturia will be able to offer more exciting updates and improvements like this over time, ensuring that MicroFreak is always fresh and relevant.
To update your synth, simply connect it to your computer, load up the Arturia MIDI Control Center, and hit the 'update' button for MicroFreak."
