How Honeysmack jams live techno — 303, 808, modular & more

video upload by Noisegate and Honeysmack

"David Haberfeld — better known as Honeysmack — is a live techno improviser. That means the tracks in his sets are built and arranged in real time in front of an audience rather than pre-sequenced in a DAW. In this studio tour he walks through the hardware he performs with and puts a track together from scratch on the spot.

The rig spans vintage and modern boxes: the Roland TB-303 (the synth-with-a-sequencer that anchors a lot of his sound), Roland's TR-808 and TR-909 drum machines, a Mackie 16-channel mixer, a DJ mixer he's come to use as a performance instrument, Behringer's RD-8 MKII and RD-9 (clones of the 808 and 909, both of which he beta tested), the Behringer Syncussion SY1, a Pro-1 synth and a modular system. Along the way he gets into why the 808 and 909 ended up defining whole genres — and argues it had less to do with how they sounded and more to do with what was simply available at the time.

Honeysmack has a new Live Techno Masterclass coming up on Sunday 26 July at Collingwood Yards, Melbourne:

NAMM 2020: Korg ARP2600 Semi-Modular Synth

Published on Jan 16, 2020 Noisegate

"Noisegate looks at Korg’s resurrection of the ARP2600 Semi-Modular Synth from the floor at NAMM 2020."

P.S. I'm hearing the mini version was just a render and never pursued by KORG. Currently they have no plans for any other version than the full sized. The question then, is how did the renders get out?

DRUM MACHINE Review and Buyers Guide Part 1

video upload by Noisegate

"Drum machines have come a long way in a relatively short period of time. If you think about the first fully programmable drum machines such as the Roland legendary TR-808, that was only a little over 40 years ago. Roland’s first MIDI drum machine, the House and Techno queen that is the TR-909 was manufactured in 1982. It’s nice to reminisce about the 1980s when drum machines became popular, although there’s been some modern classics during this millennium including the Elektron MachineDrum from 2001 and Dave Smith Tempest from 2011. Today there are a plethora of new drum machines all with amazing new features. Yes, many manufacturers these days politely provide a nod to the classics such as the 808, 909 and LinnDrum through to the modern classic in their designs. Here is our mega drum machine guide for the current drum machines that are being manufactured. This project became so big, that we had to split it into two parts, so here is part 1:

Check out the specs and the bits we love from each of these drum machines here: https://noisegate.com.au/drum-machine...

If you think that was mega, we’ve still got plenty more. We’ll be covering the Roland TR-8s, Korg Drumlogue, Erica Synths Perkons and more in part 2...!!

KORG Berlin Phase 8 | Acoustic Synthesis from First Touch to Full Jam

video upload by Noisegate

"We head to the Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio for our first hands-on look at the KORG Berlin Phase 8, one of the most unusual instruments to land on the Noisegate desk in years.
Phase 8 is built around eight electromechanical voices, each physically striking a steel resonator or tine. Instead of traditional oscillators, sound is generated through real vibrating materials, then shaped with envelopes, modulation, sequencing, and analogue wavefolding. The result feels closer to playing a physical instrument than programming a synth.

In this video, we explore:
– How Phase 8 produces sound
– Sequencing, pluck, shift and performance controls
– Acoustic interaction using everyday objects
– Processing Phase 8 with external effects
– Integrating Phase 8 into a wider live jam setup

CHAPTERS:

1:40 – Touch, Feedback & Physical Interaction
2:13 – Tuning, Scales & Resonators Explained

Explore the Possibilities of Tymp Legio: Your Key to Versatile Eurorack Percussion

video upload by Noisegate

"Here we’re looking at Noise Engineering's Tymp Legio, a palette of big digital percussion in just 6hp. The Tymp Legio we would label as the younger cousin to the BIA, is full of drum sounds without a sample in sight! It also has a few clever functions including the ability to pass sound through it and duck your audio through the appropriately names Quack inputs. Is this the best digital 6hp percussion module yet, let’s take a look!"

"The eurorack noise swash is a chaotic random noise-maker and cv generator, generating its own sounds or working as an audio processor. as a stand-alone device it generates unpredictable continuously morphing oscillations on the audio output jack, and random cv fluctuations out the dual-direction "mood cv" jack. a second cv input jack controls the swash and noisegate sections with positive and negative cv voltage. an audio input jack allows for distorting an audio signal beyond recognition, or using audio to trigger and modulate the chaos. the swash knob is a 10-turn bournes pot for adjusting minor variations. each swash sounds different and has unique artwork. the eurorack noise swash consumes about 60ma of power and occupies 16 h.p. of space."

Memorymoog vs Arturia Memory V: How Close Is the Emulation? – Luke Million at Synth Temple

video upload by Noisegate, SynthTemple, Luke Million, Arturia

"The Moog Memorymoog is one of the rarest polysynths ever made — finding a working original today is next to impossible. So what happens when you sit Arturia's brand-new Memory V emulation right next to the real thing?

Producer and synth enthusiast Luke Million visits Synth Temple in Melbourne, home to one of the world's most expansive synth collections, to put the two side by side. The original 1982 Memorymoog packed six voices of polyphony, three oscillators per voice and the classic 24 dB ladder filter — but it was notoriously unreliable and eye-wateringly expensive, both then and now.

KORG Volca Drum: Performance Demo

Published on Apr 9, 2019 Noisegate

"Here is a performance video by our resident DJ & Producer Leroy on the KORG Volca Drum.
The Volca Drum is a drum machine like no other which will take your Drum sounds to a whole new level.
It's a rhythm sequencer, built around a digital synth engine, which can create a wide array of sounds. From gritty distorted crunches to metallic tones and impulses. These sounds can then be run through a waveguide resonator effect which can apply real world string or tube based resonance.
The results are absolutely wild."
