Wolfgang Palm Announces PPG Wavemapper

via Wolfgang Palm

Launch this audio demo and read.

"PPG WaveMapper is the second next-generation iOS based synth from Wolfgang Palm, who in 2012 released the PPG WaveGenerator to critical acclaim from both press and public.

In final development the PPG WaveMapper offers iPad users a second synthesiser to compliment the already loved PPG WaveGenerator from Wolfgang Palm. PPG WaveMapper allows the user the opportunity to create limitless sounds from this unique and powerful new technology.

PPG WaveMapper features the Sound Map, which maps the various sounds in a way to easily access and experiment with them, more importantly the PPG WaveMapper features a new synthesis system which maps the waveforms of a sound into a new kind of wavetable which preserves the sound characteristics better than classic Wavetable synthesis and at the same time allows for the manipulations which make WT synthesis so unique.

The Mapping window is the visualisation of a pool of programs on which 'modules' float. Those modules represent certain parameters of the synthesiser engine and each module can be placed on one of 32 programs. The moment an item is placed on map then the parameters of that module will take on the settings of those parameters in the underlying program on the Mapping window.

People who do not posses synth-programming skills can use this mapping technology as a starting point to create complex sounds. For example a user can drag a string sound source onto a drum envelope, or a guitar sound onto a string envelope – the concept is simple, yet incredibly powerful.

Power users can delve deep into the back end of any sound using a full set of professional features;

New Sound map concept – create new sounds playful and experimental
3 types of synthesis – the optimal type for kind of each sounds
Classic wavetables – for the typical PPG sounds
Time compressed samples – more authentic sounds, allowing analysis of user samples
Pure samples – classic sample playback
Analyzer – convert your own samples into the new format or into
wavetables
3 oscillators capable for totally independent sound sources
90 sound resources – a huge sound palette, from real instruments to
abstract wavetables
4 parameter editor pages – comfortable and detailed access to all the
parameters
3 Noise generators, for audio and modulations
Classic 24 dB Lowpass Filter, combined with an overdrive simulation.
Dual amplifier, for versatile control of 2 audio signals as well as panning.
13 Envelopes, for independent control of pitch, waveform, filter and noise
gain and panning
4 LFOs – with 5 waveforms
Delay/Reverb effect
Flexible Step Sequencer / Arpeggiator combination
Schematic touch keyboard – Build your own keyboard, with the keys you prefer for your music.
Powerful sound browser – sorting by category, bank management
Virtual and Hard-MIDI in/out – sending/receiving keys and controllers

About WaveMapping
Wavemapping uses visual cues to enable sound design. This may not sound too revolutionary, however it is a completely different way of programming sounds: you do not start with a lot of detailed setting, but with a combined set of parameters which you can select with the touch and swipe of a finger. And the combination of those parameters belonging to a Module make sense of course, it gives the user (being experienced or not) a very fast way for creating unique sounds.
New Analysis/synthesis system:
WaveMapper uses a new the synthesis system, which can be seen as a bridge between wavetables and samples. In wavetable systems you have great flexibility in controlling the sound, but sound material is limited to harmonic, noise-free waveforms. On the other hand there are samplers, which have very high sound quality, but very limited editing features. In WaveMapper there is a new type, which we call “time corrected sample” (TCS). This can reproduce a much wider palette of sounds then classic wavetables, but still allows for a total control of the access via an envelope or LFOs.

WaveMapper is a powerful new synth for professional iOS musicians and is the ideal partner app for those who already own the PPG WaveGenerator.

Details on the Palm Sounds MIDI Thing

You might remember the teaser video from Palm Sounds previously posted here. Details are now in.

Via Palm Sounds:

"We call it MIDI Thing for two reasons.

It's a thing ...

It does MIDI, in fact, it only does MIDI

Which is why it's a ... MIDI Thing!

So, what does it actually do? Good question. Here's an overview:

MIDI Thing is a portable battery powered MIDI looper. It takes a MIDI signal in on any channel and puts the same MIDI data out. So, to give you an example:

If you record a 4 bar bassline on channel 1 it'll continue to play that on channel 1 until you tell it to stop. You then record a chord sequence on channel 2, and it'll put that out on channel 2 as well as the bassline on channel 1. You can do this on all 16 MIDI channels and it'll keep on playing everything until you erase a channel, or switch it off!

It listens on all channels simultaneously so you don't need to do any switching around and it has a very simple interface. In fact, it has just 2 switches on it. One is the on/off switch, the other puts the device into command mode, and this is where it gets clever.

The MIDI Thing get its instructions from what ever keyboard controller is being used for MIDI input. We thought that would make sense as you've already got a keyboard in front of you and you wouldn't want to have to navigate through lots of menus on a tiny box."

See Palm Sounds for additional details.

"This has always been my dream. A system which can reproduce all kinds of sounds and transform them into a universal set of parameters. Thus all these sounds are completely morphable." - Wolfgang Palm

"At the end of the 70s Wolfgang Palm developed wavetable synthesis. This was very successful and used by many synthesizer companies in the 80s and 90s. But this technology has its limitations. The main reason is that all sounds are harmonic. In nature this does not happen very often. Many sounds like a piano string have small offsets from the harmonic frequencies. This is even stronger in sounds like bells or percussion.

Infinite PRO overcomes this limitation.

The frequencies of the overtones created by Infinite PRO can be totally freely defined. So the sounds it produces are totally free in the frequencies of their overtones. This means that each partial wave can have an arbitrary frequency.

Moreover it is possible to move these overtones independently during the duration of a note.

Another important part of most natural sounds is noise. Be it a flute or when a drumstick hits the drumhead - and this all can be reproduced in Infinite PRO.

Furthermore the noise source can be used to modulate the tonal part which results in very powerful effects.
Besides these new digital features, we still have the typical 24db Lowpass filter, 2 VCA with stereo out and effects. All this is controlled by 10 envelopes, 4 LFOs and a modulation matrix.

Maybe the greatest innovation in Infinite PRO is the Morpher. It is so easy to create new timbres and real-time effects by morphing the gains and frequencies of sounds with the X/Y controller. To get an impression of the morphing possibilities watch this short video.

Infinite PRO comes with more that 300 tonal resources, which can be loaded into the 5 fields inside the Morpher. But it does not stop there. You can edit these in detail on two extra pages and even analyse your own sounds in a sophisticated analyzer.

On the Sine Parameter panel, you edit the sine tracks with a set of parameters for each track. A track is the time sequence of one sine component over the full length of the sound. A 3D display gives a good impression of the whole resource.

Example of a 3D view showing a vocal resource which features strong pitch moves.

On the Sine Structure panel, you edit the fine structure of a track in a bar graph. A FREQ mode lets you do this for the frequency.

The Main Parameter page edits the program parameters like Oscillator Pitch, the VCF (a 24dB lowpass filter), gain envelopes and LFOs. PPG Infinite PRO is equipped with 10 envelopes. Some are fixed to a certain function, others can be freely connected with the matrix.

A sophisticated analyzer offers six modes to capture all kinds of sounds in the best possible way.

* The 3D display does not run on 32bit Mac hosts and not on all Windows PCs. But there is also a 2D mode which features all the functionality of the 3D mode and even more. If you think the 3D is very important for you, please wait for the DEMO version, and test it there before buying."

Before iOS

Handera 330 running baby hedgehog driving a Yamaha MU15

Published on Dec 10, 2014 Ashley Elsdon

Before iOS there was Palm OS. I remember having a Handspring Visor and a color Palm m505. The internal battery on the Palm eventually died. The Visor however runs on AAA batteries and is still going to this day. You could buy a MIDI adapter for it which you can see allows it to drive external gear in these videos from Palm Sounds. The software apps are still available at the miniMusic website. Palm OS was first to essentially have both the iOS layout and the simplicity of having your device morph into a singular specific tool depending on the app loaded. Apple basically turned it into a phone. I always wondered what the logic was behind Apple dismissing Android when Palm was first. It's curious that the comparison rarely comes up in the iOS vs Android wars.

Wolfgang Palm Introduces PPG Phonem Plugin

via Wolfgang Palm

"PPG Phonem lets the user create expressive vocal synthesis beyond anything ever heard before. With its advanced routing system every aspect of the voice can be controlled and modulated in any conceivable way. Anything from a quiet whisper to a scream. Use the intuitive text to speech tool to make phonem say whatever you want.
Although the PPG Phonem was originally designed to do just vocal synthesis, it turned out that the system is also capable of producing a wide range of universal synthsizer sounds. So we extended the parameter ranges and made everything accessible to the user, to take advantage of this fact.

'The human voice is a very complex system, which can produce a wide range of sounds. It is however restricted by natural physical dimensions. Phonem does not impose limits, letting you create all the filter configurations and sweeps you could only ever have dreamed of.' - Wolfgang Palm

The heart of the system is a multi resonator filter with 12 individual resonators which can produce vocal sounds as well as all kinds of filter sweeps and effects. This is combined with a very flexible excitation source which can work as a simulation for the human vocal source (the glottis) but also use wavetables and time-corrected-samples (TCS) to drive the filter.

The user can dig into every detail of a synthesized utterance, right down to the individual phonemes. Each phoneme can be adjusted to meet the voice of an individual character or a dialect. Additional there is a pitch-track and a control-track which makes the voice sing with phrasing and expression. A little inspiration and imagination allows the user to create whatever they wish.

PPG Phonem comes with a modulation matrix - allowing 19 sources to control 40 parameters. In this way the vocals or sound effects can be modified rhythmically using LFOs, envelopes or two X/Y control pads. All these modifications can of cause be recorded into the controlling DAW.

For speech or vocal synthesis a versatile excitation generator is provided. But we did not leave it at that and added a wavetable and TCS system, which adds a new dimension to the sound palette. Wavetables can be imported from WaveGenerator or created and edited, TCS can be imported and modified from WaveMapper 2.

Phonem comes already with more than 100 resources and a huge number of presets made by our sounddesigner team. The browser page allows you to list and sort your sounds. Besides that you can exchange single presets with another bank of sounds.

New Synth Coming from PPG

Something new is developing at PPG Published on Jul 29, 2017 WPalmWT

"A short teaser of my new synth
Thanks to Jean-Luc Nest for the beautiful sounds"

PPG of course is Wolfgang Palm, maker of the original line of PPG hardware synths, and the more recent iOS and software synthesizers based on the classic PPG wavetable synthesis and more. My guess is this will be a new software or iOS synthesizer, but you never know of course...

Structured noise

In time, from noise came individual sine waves.

Some of these sine waves were louder, others quite.

Some had low frequencies others frequencies were high.

The sine waves grouped together in various amplitudes and frequencies.

Together they created fundamentals, then formed partials, overtones and harmonics.

PPG WaveMapper 2 for Mac OS X and Windows Announced - Full Details

Details via Wolfgang Palm (captured here for the archives):

"PPG WaveMapper 2 for Mac And PC 1Wolfgang Palm is pleased to announce the PPG WaveMapper 2 for Mac OS X and Windows. The PPG WaveMapper first appeared as an iOS App and received widespread acclaim from public and press alike.

Music Radar said of the iOS version of WaveMapper
'Wolfgang Palm’s second iOS synth is just as impressive as his first. Again, PPG WaveMapper is one of the most complex and impressive sounding instruments on the App Store.'

Francis Preve said of the iOS version of WaveMapper in Keyboard Magazine
'So, if the depth and complexity of WaveGenerator was a tad too intimidating for users, WaveMapper has that problem solved with real innovation and an interface that brings the fun of sound design to a whole new generation of producers.'

PPG WaveMapper 2 is a greatly expanded version, with many new features, including the WaveMap and new resource merging possibilities.

PPG WaveMapper 2 comes with a very flexible synth engine, capable of playing material from classic wavetables as well as samples and a new type which we call “Time corrected sample” (TCS). This type still has the advantage of wavetables, which is totally random access of the material, but preserving the authentic sound of the original sample.

PPG WaveMapper 2 has three oscillators have independent control of the sound resources and access of the material. Each oscillator has its own WaveMap with up to 16 zones, filled with any combination of the resources. The control of the zones can be done by the keyboard, which we call Multi- tabling, or by a path that determines how the engine plays back the material.

The synthesizer is controlled by over 200 parameters, which can be directly programmed on the two editor pages. In addition to that there is the SoundMap that acts as a module manipulation tool, moving the 8 icons to different fields on the Map changes sounds. These fields are loaded with programs that then define the results of the morphing. Thus the user can setup their own “themes” of sounds they wish to generate with a setup. The morphing can be done rapidly or in an evolving morph from one sound into another.

The built in Analyzer lets you convert your own samples into resources the synth can use in its oscillators. (fig Analyser)

WaveMapper 2 comes already with around 300 resources and a huge number of presets made by our sound design team from around the world.

The browser page allows you to list and sort your sounds. besides that you can exchange single presets with another bank of sounds.

Key Features:

PPG WaveGenerator by Wolfgang Palm Now Available!

It has arrived: WaveGenerator - PPG - Wolfgang Palm (iTunes)

Wolfgang Palm's latest synth comes to the iPad.

"PPG WaveGenerator is the latest development from the inventor of wavetable synthesis, Wolfgang Palm. It is a next generation synthesizer, building on the heritage of the PPG Wave keyboards.

The PPG WaveGenerator comes with a multitude of wavetables. The sound material contains the typical sounds from the original PPG wave models, as well as many new sounds generated by versatile analysis tools and also hand edited waves.

This app enables the user, to create his own wavetables in a playful way, and to hear the result immediately. Also you can construct the waves by adding harmonics very precise.

Another way is to transform a picture into a wavetable. You can load photos from your album or even shoot a picture with the camera.

The waves are collected in a grid of 256 fields, to which the 3 oscillators of the synthesizer have arbitrary and independent access.

In a 3D display you get a visual impression on how the sound evolves. You can turn around the 3D object and zoom in and out,

The Parameters of the synthesizer are divided into modules, which allows easy, yet powerful editing.

It contains 3 oscillators with independent control of pitch and waveform. Each oscillator has its own glide, which gives a very dynamic sound.

With a sophisticated routing system, the diverse modulation sources can be connected to all important control points.

The keyboard is configurable totally freely, so you can setup all well-known musical scales, but also all imaginable custom scales that best fit into your music.

PPG WaveGenerator benefits all advantages of the iPad, like X/Y control after the key on event, or two finder gestures for spectrum control. After a key is hit, the tone may be modified and modulated in various ways, just by moving your finger.

A comfortable browser lets you sort the sound programs; you can categorize and rate them. Also complete custom sound banks may be created.

All significant parameters are controllable via MIDI.

There is a built in context specific help for all pages and modules.

Key Features:

•Creation of your own waves and wavetables.
•Playful sound creation simply by drawing or picking harmonics
•3D page, visualization of the wavetables, transformation from photos into wavetables.
•256 waves assembled within a wave grid
•3 Audio Oscillators
•3 Noise generators, for audio and modulations
•Classic 24 dB Lowpass Filter, combined with an overdrive simulation.
•Dual amplifier, for versatile control of 2 audio signals as well as panning.
•13 Envelopes, for independent control of pitch, waveform, filter and noise gain and panning
•4 LFOs
•Arpeggiator
•Delay/Reverb effect
•Audio engine with 2 synthesis modes, and variable wave blending quality.
•Directly accessible context help inside the app
•Use a camera, to shoot a picture and then transform it into a sound!
