Testing the new Synthesizers.com Q104 Illumination Controller module

video upload by Morten Beck

Note there's already a Synthesizers.com Q104 MIDI Interface module.

"Testing the new Q104 Illumination Controller module from Synthesizers.com.

The Q104 is a new module in the Power modules range, so like the other power modules, it's not a module that is directly part of the synthesizer, but in this case, it deals with the LED illumination inside your cabinet.

The module comes with a 6-foot self-adhesive LED strip, that you can stick inside the cabinet. The LED strip is long enough to loop around from bottom to top in a 2x22 space wide cabinet.

Disclaimer: I am not a native English speaker, so please ignore any wonky English. And, also, I am not affiliated with Synthesizers.com and neither have I been sponsored or paid by them to make this review.

The Purple Synthesizers.com Modular

via this auction

"In September 2002, Roger Arrick of Synthesizers.com produced a one of a kind purple faced version of his modular synth. Normally, these modules are black. It is housed in a custom QCP22 22-Space Portable Cabinet which is also sporting a nice grey tolex covering, another unique feature. The modules also have blue LED's instead of the standard red ones. Synthesizers.com has never produced any modules in any other color than black, and this particular synth was produced as a one-of-a-kind item by them.

This modular synth is pure analog heaven. It has three oscillators and two filters. One filter is a "Moog" type transistor ladder filter switchable 12 or 24dB/octave. The other filter is a "State Variable" filter. This modular is similar in capability to a MiniMoog but with an extra filter, full patchability and other things like a "Clipper" and a Sample & Hold module.

This synth can be controlled by either Midi (via its own Q104 Midi Interface module) or any external Control Voltage (CV) device using the 1V/octave CV standard. Since this is a true modular synth there is no internal patching, like in an ARP 2600, so you will need patch cables to make sounds. The only patching internally is for powering the modules from the internal power supply.

After its initial manufacture, the first owner of this synth was Joe "Guido" Welsh. It was housed at his private studio, Guidotoons located outside of Nashville. Joe then sold the item to John LeVasseur, who used it extensively for his ambient progressive rock project Airfoil. John is the person offering this item for auction. (Hi!) This is the complete provenance of this item.

Examples of music (and additional images) made on this actual synth up for auction can be found at the owners MySpace music page at http://www.myspace.com/airfoilband.

Synthesizers.com unfinished Entry System 2006

Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Back in 2006, Synthesizers.com offered a "pay-as-you-go" Entry System plan: pay upfront they shipped you a 22-space cabinet and a handful of modules, and then for $120/month they'd keep sending you new modules. I got 6 modules in and lost interest, but I held onto the system for 15 years.

Recently I took the time to dust off the modules and re-rack them in a carpeted 19" 5U rack that fits all 6 of the modules and PSU in a more... approachable form factor. It's still very heavy, but much easier to lug around than the original MDF cabinet. This is a complete synth voice, including:
Q104 MIDI interface
Q106 Oscillator with PWM, linear and exponential FM, and simultaneous sine, triangle, saw, ramp, and pulse outputs
Q108 VCA with switchable linear/exponential response and inverted output
Q124 Multiples (passive)
Q109 Envelope Generator with adjustable ADSR segments
Q107 State Variable Filter with 1V/oct and linear FM, CV over resonance, a two-signal mixer, and simultaneous outputs for high-, band-, notch- and low-pass modes
The PSU is also way overpowered, as it was intended to run nearly 4x the modules (22 instead of 8), so it would be possible to build up or down with additional 5U racks. (This one is the Procraft 5U rack at 9" depth from Pro Speaker Parts, which can be had new for $71.50 as of this writing.)

Comes with 8 heavy-duty Synthesizers.com patch cables and and 8 light-weight Hosa patch cables, which is more than enough for this setup. I'm listing this as excellent because it is in great shape for its age. The only thing "wrong" with it is that some of the panel screws are a bit rusty. They're easily replaceable and don't affect the unit at all."

via this auction

"Here's a complete entry to the realms of 5U modular (or and addition to you setup of course)

I have now completed the system so it is very close to a 2022 Portable 22. It has a few exceptions though:

The Midi interface is the older Q104
The envelopes have been replaced with the Corsynth C106 Dual Loopable VC AD Envelope which adds some fun and functionality. On request I will replace the module with two Synthesizers.com Q109 Envelope Generators.
I have also added a Synthesizers.com Q120 Connector Module for easy integration with Eurorack.
The power supply is not integrated in the rack and consist of two QPS4 Desktop PSUs with power harness to power all modules (see photo)"

Sequetron 13.07 with Studio-22 modular synth

Published on Sep 29, 2013 Phil Tipping·53 videos

"Quick lash-up using Korg i30 as a simple MIDI keyboard into Sequetron which drives two MIDI-to-CV devices on two separate ports, giving 2 'voices' on dotcom modular synth.
Port 1 goes via Kenton Pro Solo to VCO3, Q107 filter, EG & VCA.
Port 2 goes via Q104 module to VCOs 1 & 2, Q150 filter, EG & VCA.

Sequetron uses 2 macros triggered by Korg i30 foot pedals to switch live output between port 1 & port 2 (could also use normal port commands from the MIDI keyboard, but macros are a new feature!). The 'record attrib source' config option is set so that live's current port value is automatically transferred to the recorded sequence(s) when the recording starts.

This type of synth is essentially monophonic so can't overlay too many concurrent notes as they compete for the limited VCO/VCF paths. You could buy more VCOs, VCFs, VCAs etc., but this is an expensive way of building a polyphonic synth. A cheaper option (although arguably not as much fun!) is to connect additional mono or poly sound devices on other ports. Can have up to 9 ports on current version of Sequetron.

Chamber Pressure - Gayane Adagio - Khachaturian

Published on Jan 31, 2016

"Aram Khachaturian's beautiful 'Adagio' from Gayane's Ballet.

Mostly famous from it's use in Kubrick's '2001-A Space Odyssey' in the voyage to Jupiter sequence.

The large format 5U modular synthesizer is played live with a midi file from Cubase.

Three voices are sequenced by a MOTM 650 and Synthesizers.com Q104. Each voice consists of a full resonant filter with other vco's stacked and blended behind the filter sine waves. The lower third voice is a MosLab 901 suite with Oakley Discontinuity and Q106 through a MosLab 904 Moog ladder. The upper two voices are Q106's through a Suit&Tie Guy Post-Lawsuit Low Pass and an Oakley SVF in low pass.

The atmospheric noise behind the voices is a patch mixture of pink noise and ring-modulated pitches from the lower voice. The pitch tuning is purposefully skewed off-pitch to rise and fall between the two ring modulated vco's (SSL 1200 & 1130 DDVCO). They are sent through a MOTM 440 VCF which is also highly resonant with pitched FM. Then on to the Encore frequency shifter which is again pitch shifted via the note data from the lower voice sequence pattern. The finish of the patch is a two channel separation of the Up and Down outputs of the Encore FS into a Modcan 73B dual delay.

A final addition of Valhalla Shimmer is applied to the atmospheric patch in Cubase. Other delays to the main voices are two Lexicon dual reverb/delays and a TCElectronics D-Two.

All recorded in one pass at once. Thanks for listening and reading along."

Dark Sessions 001 - Sleeping giants -

A patch featuring only the 5U/MU system. The system was triggerd/synched via the Synthesizers.com Q104 Midi interface, getting signals from ableton live. The signal synchs the Corsynth VCLFO and the Hexinvert quad simpleseq. Though the synching wasn't really necessary. Had it running from a different patch and just forgot to unplug it.
The whole thing was put through massive reverb from Ableton Lives own reverb VST. No other post processing.
