#Superbooth | Buchla Ziggy standalone complex oscillator synth

video upload by CatSynth TV

"CatSynth host Amanda tries out the new Buchla Ziggy, a standalone synthesizer based on the classic "complex oscillator" design.

For more info, please visit https://buchla.com/

For regular viewers of our in-studio synth reviews, please wait for the end 😹"

Overwhelmed with SUPERBOOTH Posts?

If so, here are a few tips:

1. The News label will get you to the first post on new gear.

2. Use the Search box on the top right of the site to search for specific gear. For example Ziggy.

3. The brand label at the bottom of posts will filter all posts in order by a given brand. For example Polyend.

As for filtering out SUPERBOOTH posts, unfortunately there is no such filter. "-SUPERBOOTH" doesn't filter them out. You'll have to scroll down the page, and click next until you are caught up. But don't worry, the SUPERBOOTH rush usually only lasts for a few days. And remember, every single post here goes up by hand.

Note: all SUPERBOOTH videos from supporting members and banner sponsors go up as a thank you for supporting the site.

I also try to post all manufacturer videos as a record of synth history in the making.

A Buchla for $ 999? - Superbooth 2026

video upload by Let's Play Synths

"The new Ziggy is out! Or rather, it has been announced on May 5th and will be available later this year. It's a monophonic synth that can be powered by 5V USB C with 1A, has enough connectors to integrate it with other Buchlas and it sounds WILD."

Ziggy is a desktop Buchla that has all the flexibility of a modular with no patching required – Demo

video upload by MusicRadar Tech

"Buchla’s Ziggy monosynth aims to bring the brand’s singular style of West Coast synthesis to a wider audience, both by dropping the price – at $999, Ziggy is a fifth of the price of the company’s Music Easel – and repackaging the sound engine in a non-modular, self-contained desktop instrument that’s intended to be more modern and accessible than its previous designs.

The format may have changed, but Ziggy still has the digitally-controlled analogue architecture of a classic Buchla: a complex oscillator with wavefolding, a modulation oscillator for FM and AM, and a low-pass gate in place of a conventional filter and VCA, inviting the kind of unconventional sound design that has earned the brand a place in the hearts of those looking for an experimental alternative to the traditional East Coast approach. What makes Ziggy different, though, are additions like browser-managed patch storage, digital effects, and extensive connectivity: alongside CV inputs for pitch, gate and modulation, you get an external audio input and 5-pin MIDI and USB-C connections, which allow for the kind of external control via the KeyStep that you can see here.

It’s fair to say that most music-makers won’t have had the chance to experiment with a Buchla before, and with Ziggy, the company is hoping to change that. While it’s clearly more approachable than a Music Easel or a Skylab, designing sounds with Ziggy will still take some getting used to, as we found out over at Buchla’s booth – but cycling through the instrument’s presets, which showcase the unique, often chaotic timbres that West Coast synthesis is known for, left us eager to dive deeper into the Buchla universe. Mission accomplished."

BUCHLA Ziggy Sound DEMO & Walkthrough — Superbooth 2026

video upload by Hispasonic

"At Superbooth 2026, Buchla unveils Ziggy: their most portable and accessible analog desktop synthesizer to date. Filmed at the Buchla booth in Berlin, this video walks through the instrument's main features and includes a full sound demo.

Ziggy distills the DNA of classic Buchla instruments into a compact, immediately playable format: complex oscillator, modulation oscillator, Cycler (envelope + pulser, à la 208c), lowpass gate and a stereo digital effects section with a brand-new ping pong delay. All modulation routing — normally done with patch cables on a Buchla — is handled through flexible assignments from the panel and the oscilloscope screen.

KEY FEATURES
Fully analog signal path + digital stereo effects True analog bypass (voltage divider) when dry is at zero "Programs" designed as a starting point, not as closed presets Fader quantization to scales (pentatonic minor, etc.) Oscilloscope screen doubles as the programming and mod-assignment display

CONNECTIVITY
USB-C (power + MIDI) plus a second USB-C dedicated to power 3.5 mm TRS Type A MIDI and 5-pin DIN MIDI
Eurorack patch points: gate, modulation, pressure and 1V/oct
Aux audio input and stereo outputs

PRICE AND AVAILABILITY
$999 street price. Available for pre-order, first units expected late summer / early fall 2026"

Meet Ziggy, the new desktop instrument from Buchla!

video upload by Buchla

"Meet the Buchla Ziggy - a new instrument formed around the famous Buchla “complex oscillator.” With a new, “unpatched” instrument experience, Ziggy offers quick, gestural means of assigning modulation and composing music. Ziggy incorporates many of the Buchla innovations that have long been taken for granted: digital control over the analog audio, additive synthesis, unique and musical interactions, and the focus on making an “instrument” rather than a “synthesizer.”

All sounds in the video were made with the Ziggy!

Update: additional pics via Perfect Circuit added below.

What is Ziggy?

The Buchla Ziggy is a new instrument formed around the famous Buchla “complex oscillator.” With a new, “unpatched” instrument experience, Ziggy offers quick, gestural means of assigning modulation and composing music. Ziggy incorporates many of the Buchla innovations that have long been taken for granted: digital control over the analog audio, additive synthesis, unique and musical interactions, and the focus on making an “instrument” rather than a “synthesizer.” Ziggy modernizes and simplifies a familiar Buchla tradition: composing music in a style of synthesis often associated with the western coast of America. Like any musical instrument, it can be played on its own, crafting sequences and sounds from its unique arrangement of controls. It pairs very nicely with a portable keyboard like the Buchla LEM218, but It also plays with a large range of third-party devices and DAWs through MIDI, USB, and 1v/octave CV.

There are a number of unique ways to shape your sounds internally and externally. The Cycler is an original modulation source that acts like the combination of a clock, envelope generator, LFO and random generator. With it, you can modulate pitch and timbre and/or trigger the gate envelopes. Other modulation sources include an “extra” slow LFO and external MIDI control. Rather than using cumbersome patchcords, modulation is assigned with switch selection and dialed in with the encoder or its own associated sliders. The modulation oscillator acts as the primary modulation source at low frequency or audio rates to modulate the Complex Oscillator with AM or FM modulation, and is often blended as a second sound source. The Envelope for the Low Pass Gate (a combination amplifier/filter) can be shaped by selecting common envelopes and manipulated in time and amount, rather than attack, decay, sustain, release.

Creatively, it is easy to quickly make music and design sounds with Ziggy. Assigning modulation to different parameters is made with simple gestures of holding buttons and moving sliders. Surprise is certain, with a source of “uncertainty” available for the Cycler’s attributes. Sounds are easily saved with the simple preset system. Glowing LEDs indicate assignments and modulations. Its unique analog sounds are sure to delight and entertain. Special chaotic modulators can be accessed from the menus, driving the sounds in unusual ways. Scales and alternate tunings expand your musical universe while pitch sliders can be quantized to scales to make them melodically playable

Musically, Ziggy is versatile. With two analog oscillators, multiple modulators, a variety of tunings, envelopes, and wavefolding and shaping, there’s a variety of sounds to be made. While Buchla is often associated with the purely experimental, there’s strange strings, wonderful drums, exotic leads, plucky percussions, and deeply felt basses that can be synthesized from Ziggy.

Practically, Ziggy fits well in a small studio. The patchcord-free design, simple USB-C power, and comprehensive MIDI control makes it easy to add to your kit; its handsome, durable enclosure of oak and steel with classic Buchla style makes it belong. Configure the device through its simple menus or using a web browser and the web app.

New England Synth Fest - Bill T Miller Synthesizer Performance @ Museum of Science Boston - 08.11.22

video upload by Bill T Miller

"Bill T Miller Synthesizer Performance @ New England Synth Fest @ Museum of Science Boston - 08.11.22. This BTM stereophonic improv performance features a CLASSIC SYNTH array... Buchla Easel Command 208-C, Korg ARP 2600, Moog Mother-32, Make Noise O-Coast and 4MS STS Sampler & Toppobrillo MiniMix.

Video Produced/Directed/Edited by Bill T Miller
Cameras: BTM & Sheri Hausey & Beth Moguel

BILL T MILLER, a chameleon of sonic exploration, is a multi-instrumentalist musician, composer, recording engineer, producer, filmmaker, photographer, artist, instrument builder and cat lover. From toy piano at two years old to starting a "band" with tennis racket guitar and trash can drums in the 60s to becoming a professional recording engineer / producer / live sound tech after graduating from College for the Recording Arts in San Francisco in 1976, his paths are always unfolding and looping. At recording college he took synthesizer courses with ARP 2600 and Emu synths and then worked (as live sound and recording engineer) in California until 1980.

Eventually ending up in Boston working as a freelance recording engineer and live sound engineer and then starting his own Headroom Recording Studios. While much of his "professional career" was devoted to recording and photographing OTHER artists, he was always working on his own weirdo music bands in the shadows. Some of these adventures include Out of Band Experience (OBE), Kings Of Feedback, Drum Army, Kings Of Slack, Zonkulator, and Orgy Of Noise with over 25 full album releases on his own DIY labels as an artist.

BTM's quest has looped back around to a nostalgic look forward incorporating ALL of the past adventures while moving sideways in time in to an unknown future think void. Living in Boston for 37 years and giving every moment to this insatiable desire to CREATE and SHARE is focus of his true path.

LŪP - custom tape looper and phase pattern generator

Lomond Ziggy Campbell

"LŪP came about when I was commissioned to build a custom tape-looper instrument for a musician called King Creosote. I wanted the machine to embody the compositional ideas of the two esteemed New York avant-garde composers, William Basinski and Steve Reich. It plays 12 second tape loops which ‘disintegrate’ over time as the tape passes near to a rotating magnetic disc. This rotating disc also provides a clock and drives two eccentric cams which sends out ever-shifting phase patterns. You can hook the machine up to a modular synthesiser and process the disintegrating tape loops while generating Reichian phase shifting patterns. I made an album doing just that which will be available on 4th Dec from Bandcamp."

The HARMONOGRAPH SYNTHESISER & How to Sequence Your Eurorack System with a Record Player

Lomond Ziggy Campbell

This one is in via Joshua. Links to additional info in the description below.

"I built an 18th century harmonograph and connected it to a 21st century modular synthesiser.

A harmonograph is an old scientific device that uses pendulums to create illustrations of harmonic motion, called lissajous figures. On this harmonograph each pendulum is connected to a sensor which triggers different elements of the synthesiser so that every time it makes a drawing, it also plays an accompanying synth soundtrack. There's also a contact mic on the drawing board to pick up the sound of the pen.

It uses three pendulums - two connected in a linear way to the pen and one rotary pendulum connected to the drawing board. You set them all swinging, lower the biro pen to the drawing board and let the pendulums run down over a period of about 5 minutes, after which both the unique drawing and soundtrack are complete.

I recorded an album of the first 18 drawings which can be downloaded from my bandcamp page:
https://lomondcampbell.bandcamp.com/a...

You can see the drawings here:
https://www.lomondcampbell.com/harmon...
I used proximity sensors and an Arduino to get the harmonograph talking to the synth. You can find the code, examples of drawings and sounds plus more information about the project on my website:
https://www.lomondcampbell.com/harmon..."

And the optical record player:

MODULAR MECHANICAL REMIX of The Paralian by Andrew Wasylyk

"This is a kind of live remix made by mangling one of my favourite records through my modular system. I'm using a DIY turntable sequencer I built using an arduino. Here's a link to the video of how to make it - [below]

The record is The Paralian by Andrew Wasylyk. It's a cracker so go ahead and enrich your life by buying a copy.

HOW TO SEQUENCE YOUR EURORACK SYSTEM WITH A RECORD PLAYER

"Convert any turntable in to a programmable rotary gate sequencer for modular #Eurorack systems with just a few components and a simple bit of coding.

- Control tempo with your turntable speed control!
- Sample from a record while staying in sync!!
- Build yourself two and beat match with dual turntables!!!
- Make your live #modular set more visual so thousands of people come to see you play instead of your three best pals.......TRUST ME!

Components:
x1 #Arduino Nano
x4 proximity switches / reed switches
x4 10K resistors
x4 3.5mm mono jacks
x4 LEDs (optional)
x4 100 Ohm resistors (optional)
x4 SPDT toggle switches (optional)
x1 vero board
.... + some camdenboss terminal blocks if you're in to that kind of thing.

Here's the link to the code, schematics and diagram:
https://www.lomondcampbell.com/projec...

For my device I used some flush cable proximity switches I got from a lab clear out. They're no longer available but this is pretty much the same thing:
https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/produc...

The neodymium magnets I used are 4mm diameter by 2mm deep and any mild steel sheet metal will do for the plate.

I included some LEDs in my circuit as visual indicators plus some toggle switches so you can mute each channel, but neither are necessary."
