"An unedited, live electroacoustic improvisation exploring the wildly experimental synergy between the Hikari Instruments Monos and the SOMA Laboratory Cosmos. Driven by its wide frequency and dynamic ranges, the Monos dictates a highly varied and unpredictable sonic landscape—rapidly shifting from abrasive noise and erratic blips and bloops to more structured, tonal sequences.

This raw, volatile output is fed directly into the Cosmos, which catches, mangles, and loops the Monos' extremes into a generative, evolving hardware conversation.

There are no annotations or on-screen text in this video. Just sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride!

The performance was recorded live, then lightly mastered in Pro Tools.

Hypnotic PLL Drone: MTL PURPLL Standalone Jam

"Welcome to another jam on @abregegere! Grab a coffee, relax, and enjoy this unannotated, improvised ambient drone performance.

In this session, the Montreal Assembly (MTL) PURPLL is acting as a standalone sound source operating in drone mode. The signal is then sent into the Soma Cosmos for expansive looping and textures, and finally through the UAFX Golden Reverberator for that lush, final coat of space.

The endless array of melodies you hear are generated by the PURPLL’s Div and Mpy voices, which are being modulated by the internal LFO. What makes this patch particularly striking is that everything is playing in just intonation—meaning the harmonic and subharmonic intervals are based on exact, whole-number frequency ratios. Combine that perfect mathematical harmony with the gritty, "chip-tuney" character of the PURPLL, and it creates a beautifully chaotic but deeply musical jam.

"Welcome to another live hardware improvisation. In this session, I am exploring the unpredictable and intricate textures of the Cyma Forma RN random synth, processing its generative output directly through the SOMA Laboratory Cosmos for expansive, drifting loops and atmospheres.

There are a total of 53 patches in the video, all of them generated with the push of a button!. Some are allowed to play out for a few minutes, while others are heard only for a few seconds.

Reticulum Versio vs Soma Cosmos

"The Soma Cosmos 'Drifting Memory Station' is unfortunately only available as a very large pedal unit. I've been on the lookout for a Eurorack module that could do the same thing, and found a firmware called 'Reticulum Versio' (created independently of Noise Engineering) that replicates much of the Cosmos functionality.

Now that I have both, I figured I'd try them out next to each other and see how they compare. The Cosmos has a few more features and control, which is to be expected since it's got more real estate to work with, but the Reticulum captures the core of Cosmos.

"The Novation Peak does just sound so damn good. I went into a weekend sesh with the intention of building a new Midi map for it, but got stuck simply enjoying how great it sounds. The Peak is the sound source for everything you hear across these three pieces. I took snippets and looped in Cocoquantus then smeared using Cosmos. I also took a second FX send through Onward / Lossy / Gen Loss for some added texture. Oto Boum and CXM 1978 ever present."

In this one, I'm using noise from Noise Plethora to excite Iroi. I'm using a band pass filter on Noise Plethora, sequencing it with the Voltage Block. On Iroi, I'm using the comb filter with internal modulation on the resonance. I'm also using the resonator with modulation on the feedback, and the echo and ambience. The levels of the resonator, echo, and ambience, are sequenced by the Voltage Block. I'm then sending Iroi to the Zagreb filter from Xaoc, using its low pass filter with noise modulation of the spread control. I'm also using the high pass output of Zagreb, sending it through the Guillotine distortion module, and from there, to the EON filter. This is going to 2 delays on Samarkanda, so only when I open the EON filter, the sound goes to the delays, and I play with the delay times.

A live synthesizer jam performed entirely on hardware, with the Fourm at the centre.

The amazing Devin Belanger (‪@devinbelangermusic‬) aka Miles Away (‪@thisismilesaway‬) was kind enough to lend me his Sequential Fourm. Thank you, Devin! If you haven't checked out Devin's amazing channel or his music, please do so!

The Fourm is Sequential's entry-level analog polysynth, as far as I can tell. It has four voices, which is somewhat limited but OK for many circumstances, and sounds (to my ears) as good or better than any other Sequential synth I've personally owned. (Note: I haven't had a Prophet 5/10 and Devin swears by that thing.) So if the sound and a decent workflow are all that matters for you, and four voices is enough, then this thing is a no-brainer.

That said, its main feature is its poly-aftertouch keybed, which allows for you to modulate sounds by pressing into each of the keys. I love polyAT, and the Hydrasynth's polyAT keybed was tremendously inspiring to me. That said, I really struggled to get the polyAT to feel right for my playing. The biggest issue was a discrepancy between how the black keys responded versus the white keys. For the white keys, I could get a great linear aftertouch response, but with the black keys, it would often quickly ramp from 0 to 100 in a way I couldn't control. This could be something I get better at, or maybe it's this particular unit, or maybe it's just an issue with my skills. But ultimately, I found that the polyAT wasn't for me.

The sound, however, most certainly was. This thing sounds amazing. Here, I ran it through the Walrus M1 Mk2 (for auto-panning) and the Empress Reverb (for reverb), and then into the Soma Cosmos for looping. The first half was the more traditional "song" aspect, but truthfully, the second half wandering was my favourite. I could listen to a synth like this all day.

Description:
Late 2025 Walker Farrell from MakeNoise started an international music challenge for musicians to participate in, submit your own Graphic Score, then at the draw of a hat, you would be assigned someone else's score to interpret and create music from. I am always interested in music challenges and the more off-beat the better.

Late December 2025 names were drawn at random, Walker constructed a collection of MakeNoise modular synthesis cards to generate random numbers to set who gets what score. I was allocated a topographical map from Bruce Magill that contained some text notes and penciled in graphics. Bruce had a musical concept in mind for this score but did say "Notes for this graphic score are only a suggestion. You can disregard them and interpret this score in any way you like, if you wish. ... Don't overthink." So I did have free reign to interpret the score as I wished, so I could let my imagination run wild. In my younger years I did a lot of wilderness hiking so was and still am, quite familiar with topographic maps, so for me this was the perfect score, something I could relate to and understood. As a side note, there is no right answer for interpreting a graphic score, so understanding is not an essential ingredient, however a vivid imagination is. It is a bit like laying on the grass and looking up at the clouds -- what do you see beyond back scattered light from suspended vapours in the sky.

Infinite Textures // HBI Harmonics & SOMA Cosmos

"Improvised ambient session exploring the interaction between wavetable drones and drifting delays.

In this performance, the HBI Harmonics provides a steady, three-voice foundation, which is then processed and evolved by the SOMA Cosmos. No external synchronization or sequencing was used. The performance was recorded live on a single stereo channel, then lightly mixed and mastered in Pro Tools.

Technical Breakdown:
• HBI Harmonics: A compact desktop synthesizer featuring three wavetable oscillators. It specializes in generating thick, harmonically rich drones through independent tuning and long-phase LFO modulation of waveform shapes.

• SOMA Cosmos: A "Drifting Memory Station" designed to create ever-evolving soundscapes. Unlike a traditional looper, it uses prime-number-based delay offsets and chaotic modulation to ensure the audio buffer never repeats identically."

Discovering the Chromaplane: First Improvised Sessions with Soma Cosmos

"In this video, I explore the Chromaplane by Koma Elektronik and Passepartout Duo for the very first time. To process the sound, I run the signal through the Soma Laboratory Cosmos Drifting Memory Station, allowing the electromagnetic textures to evolve into a shifting, ambient soundscape. The performance were recorded live from the Cosmos stereo output, then lightly mixed and mastered in Pro Tools.

The video is in two parts:
• Take 1: My initial interaction with the instrument, focusing on discovering its tactile response and basic tonal characteristics.
• Take 2: A second attempt where I push the density of the performance while maintaining the same tuning from the first session.

I have included annotations at the beginning of the video to explain exactly what the Chromaplane is and how I am approaching this specific setup.
