Discovering the Chromaplane: First Improvised Sessions with Soma Cosmos

video upload by Andre Bregegere

"In this video, I explore the Chromaplane by Koma Elektronik and Passepartout Duo for the very first time. To process the sound, I run the signal through the Soma Laboratory Cosmos Drifting Memory Station, allowing the electromagnetic textures to evolve into a shifting, ambient soundscape. The performance were recorded live from the Cosmos stereo output, then lightly mixed and mastered in Pro Tools.

The video is in two parts:
• Take 1: My initial interaction with the instrument, focusing on discovering its tactile response and basic tonal characteristics.
• Take 2: A second attempt where I push the density of the performance while maintaining the same tuning from the first session.

I have included annotations at the beginning of the video to explain exactly what the Chromaplane is and how I am approaching this specific setup.

Gear used:
• Koma Elektronik Chromaplane
• Soma Laboratory Cosmos (Drifting Memory Station)

KOMA Elektronik Monoplex
Melodic Microtonal Sequencer
Berlin-based synth makers KOMA Elektronik reveal Monoplex, a performance-driven Eurorack sequencer built for evolving melodic control. Inspired by the Komplex Sequencer, it distills its hands-on philosophy into a focused, single-channel design packed with features. Patch everything into everything and let the melodies evolve.

Every core parameter can be voltage-controlled, opening the door to endlessly shifting yet fully deterministic sequences. From tight Berlin-school patterns to generative melodic systems, Monoplex encourages experimentation.

At its heart is a significantly expanded quantizer. Beyond chromatic, major, and minor modes, Monoplex allows you to upload your own scales via MIDI SysEx using our browser-based tool. Choose from thousands of microtonal scales or create and audition your own instantly.

"Kassiopeia is a 4-channel DC interface that lets you control motors, solenoids, LEDs, fans, lights and more with MIDI or CV/Gate.

Tap, shake, vibrate, and move objects to create sound in ways you’ve never imagined. Build kinetic sound installations, trigger solenoids rhythmically, or illuminate objects for an immersive performance.

What if sound wasn’t just about speakers and synthesizers? What if you could make music by striking metal plates, shaking objects, or vibrating strings?

Kassiopeia is a 4-channel DC interface that turns movement into sound and light. It lets you control motors, solenoids, fans, LEDs and lamps using MIDI or CV/Gate. Each channel can either smoothly adjust power levels (great for controlling motors and movement) or send short, punchy triggers (perfect for percussive hits).

Designed for experimental musicians, sound artists, and tinkerers, Kassiopeia lets you:

Trigger solenoids to create percussive rhythms on any object.
Control motors and fans to shak, vibrate, or bow strings.
Control lamps and LEDs for an immersive performance.
Build kinetic sound sculptures that interact with the physical world.
Power-starve devices for glitchy, unpredictable results.
Simply connect it to a laptop via MIDI (Ableton-ready!) or control it with CV/Gate from your modular system.

During its development, we worked closely with Hildur Guðnadóttir and her band Osmium, incorporating ideas from the modified Halldorophone used in the Joker soundtrack. It’s an instrument of endless possibilities—where will you take it?"

KASSIOPEIA actually made its first mention on the site back on May 7, 2025.

Koma Elektronik Chromaplane with Oto Machines BIM

video upload by Nightlife Electronics

https://nightlife-electronics.com/

"The Koma Chromaplane has just landed in the shop and we just had to take it for spin!

Chromaplane has 10 independently tuneable analog oscillators that pass through a resonant low pass filter and a lo-fi PT2399 based digital delay.

The unique thing with the Chromaplane is in how you control and shape the dynamic output of the oscillators. Using two electromagnetic pick up coils positioned over the top of the instrument you can explore the blurred lines in the ether floating above and around the machine. From subtle and quiet drones to resonant and dynamic melodies.

Paired in this video we have the Oto Machines Bim to give some spatial ping pong effects. A super fun set up!"

KOMA Elektronik Sensei Eurorack Sensor Module

video uploads by KOMA Elektronik

The Sensei Eurorack Sensor Module complements the Koma Elektronik Field Kit Sensor Pack from six years ago:

Making Music With Sensors | Koma Elektronik Field Kit Sensor Pack

video upload by HAINBACH

"I was doubtful whether sensors would be fun tools to create music with - beta-testing the Koma Elektronik Field Kit sensors taught me otherwise. They are ideal creative tools in that they make you think differently and far out of the box. Perfect for breaking writer's block or pure musical enjoyment."

Press release for the new Sensei module follows:

"Berlin-based synth makers KOMA Elektronik introduce Sensei, a new Eurorack module designed to connect your modular system with the world around you. Whether it's light, movement, heat, or touch, Sensei lets you patch your environment.

"Originally based on the Sensor Interface from the KOMA Field Kit, Sensei is a standalone Eurorack module built for artists, experimental musicians, and installation creators who want to go „beyond the knob“.

Two sensor inputs (one for continuous signals, one for triggers and switches) allow for expressive, non-traditional control over CV and gate signals.

From subtle environmental fluctuations like heat or wind to pulsing club energy fired by strobe lights, Sensei makes your surroundings part of the music.

Users can choose from KOMA's established lineup of Field Kit Sensors currently available:

- Light
- Temperature
- Sound
- Touch
- Movement (Accelerometer)
- A Micro Sequencer with three modes
- Softpotentiometer
- Ball Switch
- Button / Jack Input
or plug in their own Arduino / DIY sensors with standard three-pin connectors.

And even without sensors, Sensei offers creative functionality: it doubles as a re-triggerable saw/triangle envelope, voltage processor with gain and offset, or a simple CV source.

Key features:

2 sensor channels: one continuous, one switch/gate style
Built-in analog processing (offset & gain)
Re-triggerable envelope mode (saw & inverse saw, gate & inverse gate)
Works with KOMA and standard 3-pin sensors
Perfect for installations, generative patches & sound experiments

With Sensei, modular becomes tactile, responsive, and alive. Your modular just grew a few more senses!

KOMA is currently running an introductory sale on their Sensors that you should grab if you are interested!

FM Radius by Koma Elektronik

quick demo/review video upload by Meska (Meska)

"Quick demo/review of the FM Radius by koma elektronik
RTFM: https://koma-elektronik.com/new/wp-co..."

"The FM RADIUS is a CV-tunable radio receiver capable of receiving radio broadcasts on the FM bands. It provides the user the ability to catch radio transmissions for further manipulation.

The CV Radio is capable of catching the strongest broadcasts without any external antennas but for better reception, an external antenna should be used.

Use it as a crazy oscillator, infinite sample generator or just listen to the news during your office break."
