Liminal Space 2 RC7: Tape, Fuzz & Beautiful New Reverb Spaces

"Liminal Space 2 RC7 now has tape saturation, tape shimmer, fuzz, robot speech, and new Authentic Soundware-inspired spaces. Your old pal Keith went in to update his haunted digital reverb synth and apparently forgot where the brakes were. So grab your headphones: we're going from beautiful studio strings to a cassette deck that probably shouldn't be allowed to drive!

First, Space Age Strings from Authentic Soundware meets four new reverb banks evolved from Jared Hunter's impulse responses, used with his permission. We explore Color EQ and Decay Color, compare Eastside Church with its source IR, and squeeze into the tiny Relic Room. These are algorithmic reverbs inspired by measured spaces; the IRs aren't playing inside the plugin.

Then things get gloriously unreasonable. The new GRIT module brings warmth, crunch, wavefolding, bitcrushing, shoegaze fuzz, varispeed tape, and Speak & Spell-style speech processing. We build tape shimmer, stereo wow and flutter, and a weird reverse-tape bloom. How many ways can you bend pitch in a reverb? Apparently, ALL OF THEM.

We also cover the new "Clean" tank filtering, Vulture 224 vintage flavor, spring/plate Material, Follow-driven reverb ducking, Lexitone Split Decay, and a quick return to True Shimmer. Plus a "Skippy Save" shortcut for your own wonderfully questionable patches. Woot!

These Plugins Sound AMAZING… Except One

"Space Age Strings, Traveler 1.1, Arturia MiniFreak V, and Liminal Space 2 RC6: three plugins I'm excited about, and one that's... fine. Your old pal Keith demos vintage strings, custom wavetable import, Bloom and reverse reverb, and gloriously backward shoegaze. Grab your mod wheel for another episode of your favorite talky synthesizer content show!

First up: Authentic Soundware's Space Age Strings, with gorgeous legatos, vintage ribbon-mic character, and serious Mancini energy. We pair those nine violins with Liminal Space 2's new Space Age Scoring Stage preset and compare the library's built-in reverb with some algorithmic spaciousness.

Then we revisit Traveler! Version 1.1 fixes the big wavetable-workflow frustrations from my previous review: now I can point it at my existing KRC Mathwaves folders without duplicating gigabytes of content. Cue polygonal bells, Morlet wavelet vowels, and a much happier Keith. We also try MiniFreak V's new user-wavetable import. It's great to have it, but I've got opinions about the workflow, the effects, and whether the software version floats my boat.

Finally, we explore my Liminal Space 2 RC6 reverb for macOS and Windows: MIDIverb II-inspired Bloom sounds, reverse-style swells, ACTUAL reversed audio, and instant imaginary Cocteau Twins guitar with Native Instruments' Electric Sunburst Deluxe. We build Bloom effects on piano, shape them with curves and wavetables, and explore Reverse Capture's Diffuse and Clear modes. Then we get dark and wobbly with Clockwarp and the new Vulture 224 filter, inspired by Alex at Vulture Culture. Woot!

First, we dig into Traveler: its three different oscillators, gorgeous filters, gain staging, and what happens when you feed it KRC Mathwaves. There are a few Windows wavetable-import quirks to discuss. Naturally, I have opinions.

Then it's on to Liminal Space 2 RC5: new Bricasti M7-inspired algorithm banks evolved from impulse-response measurements, new Micro Pitch and Legacy Enhanced pitch shift modes, and the new Scattering diffusion mode. We compare the Bricasti-inspired "West Church" algorithm against its source IR, explore dark rooms with blooming stereo tails, and put piano, drums, and sitar into some wonderfully unreasonable spaces. "The Akai MPC just became a wavetable synth! With the MPC OS 3.9 update (and the new MPC 3 desktop software), Akai added oscillators — including a wavetable oscillator with custom wavetable import — to Drum and Keygroup tracks. In this video, I walk through how wavetables actually work on the MPC: enabling the oscillator, installing your own wavetables, the format.json quirk, and a deep dive into sound design across more than a dozen wavetable categories.

To make this painless, I built the KRC MPC Wavetables Collection — 2,156 wavetables preformatted for the Akai MPC, just $10 — and added a free Akai MPC version of my Free Wavetables collection (1,600+ wavetables). Everything in the intro track (besides most of the drums) was made with these.
