Generative music algorithm plays Roland MC-707

video upload by Richard Horsman

"This new algorithm generates midi note, volume and controller data on 8 channels, one for each Roland MC-707 track. Note events occur when circles traverse the 3 horizontal lines. Volume changes occur when circles are destroyed in the black hole. Controller data and additional note events are generated by tracking the last notes played on some of the channels. Every aspect of the algorithm is probabilistic.

Designed and coded by Tony Horsman (my Dad)"

And one from Sep 12, 2021:

MidiPathFollower - An experiment in generative music creation (MC-101 and Eurorack)

"The artwork that I'm currently working on takes your eyes on a journey. My Dad suggested that the journey be travelled by a 'playhead' that makes sound/music when it hits 'notes'. This is the outcome. As always, it's a work in progress. Playheads work their way around a path/map, making decisions in real time as to which way to turn. When all notes have been reached a new map is drawn. The code that I wrote in Processing is running on a Raspberry Pi 4 with a 720x720 Hyperpixel Square LCD attached. It's generating the visuals and the MIDI data that's being sent to my Roland MC-101 for the guitar sounds then on to some effects in my modular rack."

Twanger - A Processing and MIDI experiment

Richard Horsman

"Today's experiment. Processing code written where touch screen on Raspberry Pi 4 senses note 'string' twangs and passes them on via MIDI to my modular synth (Expert Sleepers General CV module). Some interaction with Pi's keyboard (not seen) to add strings and change strings' tuning."

Richard Horsman's Lockdown Lab - The MidiThing emerges...

Published on May 27, 2020 Richard Horsman

"I've been coding/tinkering with/swearing at something, Something to initially generate beats and send them via MIDI to my modular and to sync the whole shebang with Ableton Live. This is the first step towards something more innovative - decoding images and playing 'listenable-to' modular tunage based on the data found in them. Rough camera work and iPhone audio seem to be my hallmark! I'm pleased with the sexy reset routine that shortest-path-eases all the dials back to their starting points. It features towards the end of the video for about 0.5 seconds - well worth the day of brow furrowing and hair pulling! For bonus points see if you can spot when the phrase 'ticking' switches from 'Rolex' to 'Timex' mode :)"

Twangs, Whistles and Tweets (part 1)

Published on Jan 16, 2018 Richard Horsman

"Rings and Plonk play Noisering's Branched notes while Two Bumps Tides fed by Mr Wogglebug impersonates a dome-topped robot, Peaks beats and DPO drones. Intelllijel Steps and Scales proceedings while Erica's friends add depth and repeats.

All a bit unplanned (you really *could* try harder Richard!) with a couple of gaffs and a falling photo. The next one'll be a bit more 'together' ;-)"

Stranger Things inspired modular synthesizer patch - Erica Black Wavetable VCO

Published on Jun 18, 2017 Richard Horsman

"Erica Black Wavetable VCO through a Doepfer A-103 VCF and Intellijel Quad VCA, finished off with some reverb from the Pico DSP. Sequence from z8000, quantized by uScale. Some crackles due to still not having anything decent to record sound on!"

Control Voltages from the BBC news

Published on Sep 28, 2014 Richard Horsman

"Raspberry Pi wirelessly downloads all of the images from the BBC's UK news page then transmits the pixel colour and brightness data to a waiting Arduino microcontroller which triggers a pair of DACs to send two control voltages to a waiting modular synth. Sound ensues.

This is just version 1 of the software. Lots more ideas.. just wanted to get something out there.

Anyone with the contacts/facilities/skills/time/£ to help me to take this idea and turn it into a commercial suite of modules should get in touch with me at richyho at virginmedia dot com.

Big thanks to Chigs for the mounting panels.

Thanks for watching :-)"

Doepfer A-101-2 Low Pass Gate Demo

Published on Jun 8, 2014 Richard Horsman·23 videos

"A simple demo of some of the sounds you can create using a sequencer, a couple of VCOs and an LPG (all Doepfer). The A-101-2 is often overlooked by people looking for that 'Buchla Bongo' sound. It's a shame as this module is capable of that and so much more. Here the two rows of the sequencer control the CVs sent to the main and modulation A-110 VCOs. The triggers on the top row dictate how and when the A-140 envelope generator gets triggered along with the S&H. The bottom row's switches just control S&H. An A-156 quantizer is used. A tiny amount of reverb is added by the A-199 Spring Reverb. Handheld camera work using the camera's microphone could've been better!"
