This one in via Minimal Wave's Cititrax sublabel. You might remember Veronica Vasica's Minimal Wave label from this previous psot.

"The Futurisk ‘Lonely Streets Remixes’ includes remixes by four of the band’s biggest fans, each of whom have a sound as iconic as the band themselves: Chris Carter (Throbbing Gristle, Chris & Cosey), Tom Furse (The Horrors), Prince Language (DFA, Editions Disco) and Complexxion from the UK."

"FUTURISK was a pioneering synth-punk group that recorded and performed in the pre-midi era of the early 1980s. As of yet, the Player Piano EP has not been reissued, but you can pick up a copy of a live performance of "Meteoright" at minimalwave.com on The Found Tapes LP. The audio for this video was taken from a 24bit/96kHz vinyl rip. Highly recommended.

"I use Roland SH201. Two Saw tooth waves stacked on top of each other, seperated and octave and pushed through a Fender Combo. Ah the joy of simplistic brute tones. Prior to acquiring the 201, I used a MicroKorg. Loved the MS2000 sound engine, but the little synth started giving out after a few years -- I'm guessing the circuit board's placement didn't help (beneath the keys plus my sweat build up). We have songs on our page and a video coming in a few days. You don't have to do anything for it if you don't want, we are just trying to do our own thing while taking from the past; pure synth punk."

It blows-up big; It's like blow-it's like BLOW-It's like BLIZZ-OW!!This thing was marketed when the first wave of old skool rap jumped the proverbial shark-and it shows. The dated sound of the Orchestra Hit and percussion pads, the goofy technology of the "Voice Effector," and the bogus preset "Funky Cold Medina" and "Super Freak" rap patterns make the Rapman one of the most amazing period-specific cultural artifacts of its time.On the other hand, like the Casio "SK" series of mini keyboards, a lot of us into the avant garde have explored this instrument, found its unique attributes, and have exploited them to make new and hypnotic crazy sounds. I'm here to tell you that, even though I have much lizzove for the circuit benders, you don't need to bend the Rapman or the SK's to get bizarre new tones and textures; they're already there.Casio's sampling and rap synthesizers are some of the most underrated musical instruments ever made, as well as being inexpensive and almost unbreakable. The Rapman is built Casio-tough!!So, in between working on the avant synthpunk masterpiece that I'm presently trying to write, I put on a cheeze rap pattern, plug my "Fry Cook" headset microphone into the "Voice Effector," and get stoopid wit' the prurient ill rhymes."

They're still sequencing with Cubase on a mac classic - have been since 1989. I miss their old "fire" shows - they'd dump motor oil in tin drums, light it up and then play the drums with pipes. Billowing, choaking black smoke, crazy beats, jumping flames - damn I wish it was the early 90's again. They still put on a fantastic show - Dan is a crazy-energetic vocalist.

The Screamers - Synthesizer Punk Rock

There is an intersting thread going on AH titled, "Best punk use of synth." A number of bands were called out, some of which were questioned as far as whether or not they were punk in the classic sense of punk. Well, the Screamers definitely were classic punk. They had a small stint in the late 70s in Los Angeles. They were a four piece band with Tomata Du Plenty - Vocals (R.I.P.), Tommy Gear - ARP Odyssey, David Braun - Fender Rhodes electric piano, and KK Barett - Drums. The Screamers were a band from 1977 - 1981. Notice no guitar or bass guitar, just the ARP Odyssey, Fender Rhodes and drums. What's crazy is that there are no guitars - this is not a bleepy synth experience, this is classic punk rock.
