"Welcome to the first published 'Instruōdio' session video.
My studio at Instruō HQ has gradually shifted to become more of a video room with occasional music project focus. But it is working really nicely as a space to record discussion sessions with artists and makers.

This is Tom Scholefield (aka Konx-om-Pax)
I've had the pleasure of gigging with Tom a number of times along side others on the Instruō crew.
Tom is an incredible visual artist and composer/sound designer.
We spoke about doing a session like this for ages and finally got together and recorded a few.
In this video Tom gives me a very detailed tour of the patch behind La Création Du Monde
https://konx-om-pax.bandcamp.com/
This has been toured and performed internationally. It is both visually and sonically spectacular. Tom has been very generous sharing his process and various Touch Designer secrets he's created and discovered. This session was a lot of fun to host and produce.

Tom also has a brand new album out that releases today!

Uaxactum marks the fifth studio album from Glasgow-based artist Tom Scholefield, better known as Konx-om-Pax.

Following 2020’s Astronomical Objects, this release transcends the boundaries of a traditional record—serving as the sonic counterpart to an ambitious audio-visual work of the same name, commissioned by Glasgow’s Cryptic.

Conceived during an artist residency at Arthouse Jersey, a former army barracks turned creative haven, the album emerged from a period of focused isolation. This environment afforded Scholefield the rare opportunity to develop both score and visuals in tandem, resulting in a deeply integrated multisensory experience. The piece premiered at Sonica 2024 in the Glasgow Science Centre IMAX Theatre, where hallucinatory visuals collided with immersive sound design. A second performance followed in May 2025 as part of the Glasgow 850 celebrations.

The Wire described the work as -

'a tentacular dreamscape where oil slick rainbow colours mutate across an IMAX cinema screen, in synesthetic flow with his tense Penderecki-inspired soundtrack.'"

PlantsSystem-BlackPoint

video upload by plantssystem

"PlantsSystem 'BlackPoint' is a techno sound imbued with a pitch-black texture, constructed using Cyan/n and Rebirth. Swelling low frequencies, inorganic particles of noise, and sharp, cutting synth lines intertwine beneath the minimalist beat, creating a dark groove that draws you into the depths of darkness.
The simple yet powerfully propulsive rhythm creates a profound and tense soundscape, exquisitely blending the transparent texture of Cyan/n with the hard-edged analog feel of Rebirth. The unique atmosphere, a blend of cold and heat, paints a profound worldview throughout the track.

PlantsSystem-cyan/n | PlantsSystem-Material01

video upload by plantssystem

"[A New Dimension of Sonic Experience] Granular Looper 'cyan/n' Demo by PlantsSystem.

PlantsSystem demonstrated 'cyan/n' the revolutionary granular looper developed by sound designer Katsuhiro Chiba.

'cyan/n' is a powerful sound tool that freely manipulates short sound particles (granules) to reconstruct existing sound sources in unpredictable and organic ways. In this recording, PlantsSystem uses 'cyan/n' to create an improvised, experimental techno groove.

We explore its possibilities, from noisy, psychedelic textures to deep, ambient sounds."

PlantsSystem-Material01

PlantsSystem-U・O

video upload by plantssystem

"PlantsSystem latest track, 'U・O' is an experimental electronic piece created using the iOS app Sector. Rhythms and melodies constantly transform, like sound particles reconstructing within a circle. Amidst the flow of sound, where randomness and order intertwine, fragments of the sound of YMO flash back at unexpected moments—a nostalgia evoking memories of techno pop, yet simultaneously a futuristic surge of electronic sound. This track is a vivid demonstration by PlantsSystem of the poetry of sound born from the randomness of digital technology."

PlantsSystem-GranCho

video upload by plantssystem

"PlantsSystem – GranCho
Microscopic particles swell, resonate, and eventually melt into a single flow.
'GranCho' is an experimental soundtrack by PlantsSystem, combining elements of 'Granular' and 'Chorus'.
The sound, woven with granular modulation that distorts time and space and deeply enveloping harmonic processing, evokes a sense of floating between electronic and natural.
The interplay of stillness and movement, structure and decay, reveals a different expression with every listen. Digital yet organic—PlantsSystem enters a new sonic realm."

PlantsSystem-Pattern01

video upload by plantssystem

"'Pattern01' is an electro track built upon the generative interplay of rhythm and tone, created with the Korg iMS-20. Within the tension between control and unpredictability, sonic particles drift and reorganize, maintaining a fragile sense of order while constantly evolving.

The beat moves autonomously, revealing a process where the structure of sound seems to generate itself.

Beneath the mechanical precision lies a subtle trace of human emotion, as shifting tones and self-replicating grooves coexist in a delicate balance."

PlantsSystem-Pulsar

video upload by plantssystem

"'Pulsar' is a non-beat electronica piece.
Eliminating the framework of rhythm, it is constructed around the breathing and spatial movement of the sound itself. Subtle glitches, fluctuations created by granular synthesis, and delicate reverberation processing overlap to form a static yet internally pulsating acoustic body.

Permeating the entire work are flashes of sound that, despite having no set tempo, somehow feel periodic. These repetitions and intervals reconstruct 'time' in the listener's mind.

Acoustically, the center of gravity of the low frequencies is intentionally blurred, creating a floating spatial depth. High-frequency particles spread like countless points of light, enveloping the entire piece with gently shifting noise textures.
The result is an experience in which one is drawn in not by rhythm but by the 'gravity of sound.'

"Pulsar" is an attempt to rethink the structure of electronic music,
and also an acoustic experiment to visualize the quiet vibrations that lie between hearing and our sense of time. #pulsar #prophet5 #tardigrain"

PlantsSystem-HyperGlitchMix

video upload by plantssystem

"PlantsSystem latest track, 'HyperGlitchMix' is an experimental piece that breaks down sound into pieces and then reconstructs the fragmented sound particles in a new order. The rhythm breaks down into fragments before recombining, and electronic noise and distorted effects fly around unpredictably. This futuristic and aggressive glitch soundscape gives the impression of a new musical organism being born from the remains of data. The intricate structural beauty that emerges from the chaos is a sound art unique to PlantsSystem.

Introducing GRFX – Granular Effects | Granular Audio Plugin by Imaginando

video upload by Imaginando

Imaginando Launches GRFX – Granular Effects: Turn One Sound Into a Universe

7th April 2025 – Braga, Portugal – Imaginando is proud to announce the release of GRFX – Granular Effects, a powerful new audio plugin designed to radically transform sound through the magic of granulation. GRFX takes granular processing to new creative heights—offering a flexible, expressive, and highly playable environment for sound design, experimentation, and exploration.

With GRFX, users can break down ordinary audio into micro-particles and rebuild it into evolving pads and drones, glitchy rhythms, ethereal textures, or alien soundscapes. Whether sparse or dense, shimmering or chaotic, GRFX is your sandbox for bending reality—layering, modulating, and shaping sound through time and space.

At the heart of GRFX is the Harmonic Triangle: an interactive, three-point control panel that morphs your sound into chords, arpeggios, and microtonal variations. This unique interface invites exploration and 'happy accidents,' especially when combined with the plugin’s four cross-modulatable LFOs.

Modulation is made effortless with drag-and-drop routing, instant amount control, and a global

Modulation Panel. A probability-based routing system lets users direct grains to the two

multi-effect engines, the Mixer, and dedicated Delay and Reverb sends—each with independent routing for rich, layered sonic results.

PlantsSystem-Zone16

video upload by plantssystem

"Zone16 is an experimental track where beats and textures intertwine, built using the classic sampler MPC2000 and the legendary synthesizer Prophet-5.
The tight groove of the MPC2000 supports the rhythmic structure, while the warm analog sound of the Prophet-5 expands the space, creating a unique sound world.
PureData + GEM was used for the video, and the visual expression of fantastic particles dancing like a flow further enhances the floating feeling of the music.
The sound and video unfold in sync, creating a work that gives you a sense of immersion as if you have stepped into a different dimension."

Joranalogue Audio Design x Hainbach / COLLIDE 4 / lock-in amp eurorack power / PLAYTHROUGH

video upload by BRiES

"In this video I demonstrate and try to explain the functionality of the powerhouse module that is COLLIDE 4. I split up the video into three chapters providing you with plenty of examples on how to use the different sections of the module seperately and together.

COLLIDE 4 is a collab between the Belgian electronical hi-tech wizardry team at Joranalogue Audio Design and German contemporary artist and mad audiolab scientist Hainbach. They teamed up to make a miniature version of a lock-in amplifier, a versatile test device that can be either used to hunt for subatomic particles or to make earth-shattering kickdrums and eery melody lines straight from a Kindergarten Horror flick. Joran decided that this wasn't enough of a flex so he added frequency shift functionality to the unit and don't ask me how he did it but he made the cleanest frequency shifter ever. COLLIDE 4 being all analog ciruitry that's one hell of a thing to do."

SOMA Labs Introdues Messeiver irrational device for exploring the world of primal, wild radio reception

video upload by SOMA Laboratory

"More info and how to buy: https://somasynths.com/messeiver/

During the recording I didn't change MESSEIVER settings, all changes are influence of those global natural parameters + choosing of interesting parts from the recordings."

"MESSEIVER is an irrational device for exploring the world of primal, wild radio reception – the way it was first experienced by the pioneers of radiocommunication.

MESSEIVER – is a shortwave receiver that is capable of receiving different stations from all around the Earth. Its peculiarity is that it doesn’t have the classic input tuning circuit, which lets you select a single station. Instead, it captures a big part of radio ether as it is. This way you can listen to many radio stations at once from around the globe. The set of stations that you can hear, their loudness and sound are defined by numbers of constantly changing global natural parameters. Weather, solar activity, cosmic particles, clouds and dozens of other phenomena define radio waves propagation, turning the world into a global DJ that makes a unique mix of radio stations here and now, exclusively for you. More details you can find in the manual and demo video."

"The internal speakers built into the synth are not functioning. However, the outputs are functioning properly. The screen appears to have some debris or dust particles inside of it but the LED screen itself is legible. Each key is responsive and all of the different patches sound great. In all, the current working condition is good.

PHYSICAL CONDITION: Very Good - Some scuffs and abrasions can be seen around the chassis of the keyboard, however, everything is intact and ready for action. Overall, the physical condition is very good."

Tela – Modal Synthesizer

video upload by Fors

Tela – Walkthrough

video upload by Fors

https://fors.fm/tela

"Tela orchestrates a vast array of resonant peaks, intertwined to form a critical mass of sound. It models nothing – it's a synthesizer for the here and now, to discover and create anew.

In a careful balance of depth and immediacy, Tela explores the inherent character and capabilities of modal synthesis. Like a practical joke, Tela bends a myriad of partials into perfect symmetrical waveforms only for them to dissolve into otherworldly timbres and textures mere seconds later. There are no rules.

Modal synthesis
Imagine hitting a thin piece of metal, a piece of glass or the membrane of a drum– the material vibrates and rings out with its inherent timbre, affected by the motion of the impact and the strength of the hit. This is the basis of what modal synthesis recreates.

Slate Granular Sample Player
Void Reverb & Flux Sampler

+ Modulation

Gem
Gem is an FM synthesizer capable of a wide variety of sounds, from deep and heavy bassdrums to glistening lead melodies. At its core, Gem consists of 2- Operator sinewave-based phase modulation (commonly referred to as FM) that has been fine-tuned to sound rich and punchy.

With bipolar modulation and feedback, it's possible make a vast range of different waveshapes- including common analog shapes such as square, triangle or sawtooth. It's a highly malleable form of synthesis that has been boiled down to its essentials, with an emphasis on the sheer quality of execution.

Mass
Mass is a modal synthesizer, which is a type of physical modeling synthesis that employs a bank of bandpass filter to generate its sound. Typically, physical modeling is used to mimic real-world sounds, but with Mass the essence of the synthesis method is used to make all sorts of wildly synthetic sounds, often with an otherworldly quality due to its physically-inspired origins.

The sounds possible with Mass ranges from semi-realistic percussion, bells, textures, noises, strange phase-y melodic sounds to clean and precise timbres reminiscent of additive synthesis.

Dust
Dust is a noise generator that is based around the concept of Pulsar synthesis, which is a method adjacent to Granular synthesis. The sound is composed of very short particles of sounds that creates a texture when played fast and/or dense.

Dust combines concepts from all kinds of different types of synthesis methods to create anything from pure white noise to perfectly soft spectral washes. By layering multiple oscillators Dust can also generate classic electronic metal sounds which is very useful for making hi-hats and cymbals.

Slate
Slate is a sample playback engine equipped with a granular mode that can wildly transform any sample. At its core is a high quality sample playback engine with edge smoothing (click-less playback and looping), single cycle waveform support and a flexible loop mode.

The granular mode let’s you go deeper in sound design by playing back small particles in a pattern that essentially reconstructs the original sound, but with the possibility to dramatically change the speed and pitch independently

Void & Flux
The FX (effects) track hosts two different effect engines: Void and Flux.

Void is a reverb that has been fine-tuned to sound great with a wide variety of input sounds, with an emphasis on delivering good transient response. With in-depth EQ:ing of the input and reverb signal, it’s possible to greatly shape the overall tone of the effect.

Flux is an automatic sampler that continuously records the output of all the other tracks and divides it into 16 slices that can be played back by the FX track. Think of it like an always-recording tape loop that you can use to repeat or transform sections of your pattern by playing different snippets as single shot samples.

Modulation
Each engine has a dedicated modulation page with four different modulation sources that can be routed to any parameter via a modulation matrix. The different sources are Vel - velocity received from the sequencer steps (or a MIDI note), A dedicated LFO and Envelope per track, and a random value (Rand) that is received on each trigger of a step or MIDI note.
