Klaus Schulze Has Passed Away

Klaus Schulze passed away yesterday at the age of 74.

via Discogs

"Born August 4th 1947 in Berlin, died April 26th 2022, was a german electronic pioneer, composer and musician. Schulze initially made his mark as a drummer, first with the group Psy Free, later with Tangerine Dream (he played on their first album "Electronic Meditation" before he quit) and Ash Ra Tempel (with Manuel Göttsching). In 1971 Schulze started a solo career as an electronic musician and released a couple of heavily experimental albums, 'Irrlicht' and 'Cyborg'. 1973's 'Cyborg' was the first release where he used a 'real' synthesizer, the legendary VCS 3 and later in the 70's he would record albums such as 'Moondawn', 'Mirage' and 'X' and embark on several tours, documented across a number of live albums.

In 1978 he set up the label Innovative Communication and the following year he also launched the pseudonym/project Richard Wahnfried. In the 1980's Schulze continued his hectic release schedule as well as recording several soundtracks and rebuilding his studio (he "went digital" in 1986). In summer 1983 Klaus Schulze 'sold' Innovative Communication.

In the 1990's Schulze recorded several electronic interpretations of works by classical composers (most notably Wagner) as well as collaborating with opera singers and other classical music performers on his own albums. He also started collaborating with German ambient/techno artist Pete Namlook in the series 'The Dark Side Of The Moog' on the latter's Fax label, and steered the Wahnfried project into a more modern techno- and trance-inspired direction.

Schulze '...passed away on April 26, 2022 at the age of 74 after a long disease but all of a sudden'. - statement from his social media pages."

You can find numerous posts mentioning Klaus Schulze over the years here. Below are a few better known performances featuring his work from early on to a more recent performance with Dead Can Dance's Lisa Gerrard.

"A pioneer of electronic sound, Klaus Schulze and his contributions to the synthesizer community and modern music as we know it will continue to inspire for generations.

Thank you, Klaus, for showing the world how truly human electronic music can be.

This image was taken in Berlin in 1976 according to Till Kopper @realqwave. That would have made him 28 or 29 at the time depending on the month taken.

Edits are due to 4GB FAT32 limit on my camera and also running out of memory space halfway through the encore and having to use my iPhone - terrible timing! The encore was brilliant.

My apologies.

Stefan Whitlan https://stephanwhitlan.bandcamp.com/
Ian Boddy http://www.din.org.uk/din/node/310

E-Scape is the annual all day festival of live electronic and ambient music held at ‘The Cut Arts Centre‘ in Halesworth, Suffolk. It is usually held at the end of May, beginning of June, the week after the bank holiday weekend. The event is hosted by UK record label AD Music to promote traditional electronic music from around the globe. It usually features AD Music artists but is not exclusive to the label and always includes non AD Music artists.

It started as “the Bungay Bash” in 2009 and moved to Halesworth in 2015 as the newly named E-Scape. A unique selling point for the event, as of 2015, is that the ticket includes an audio ‘download’ of the event in high rate MP3 or Flac, or on USB stick, available 2 weeks after the event. This means that fans of the electronic music scene from around the world who are otherwise unable to attend can still hear the concert, albeit afterwards, and are also actively supporting their favourite acts and the electronic music scene by so doing."

BBC Tomorrow's World Fairlight CMI from 1980 Kieran Prendiville

YouTube Uploaded by Synthasy2000 on May 6, 2011

"Not seen this before on YouTube so I've put it up for the Fairlight video collectors out there.

Kieran Prendiville bashes out a tune on a new synthesiser that can sample real sounds! Revolutionary for 1980 and now so main stream. One of TW's hit predictions.

He's wrong when he says the Fairlight (well he never actually mentions it's a Fairlight) "mathematically works out" the sound. It doesn't synthesise the sound which is the impression Kieran Prendiville is giving. He's also wrong when he says "those aren't recordings". They are of course, sounds sampled into memory as we all know and love.

Although the tape based Mellotron from 15 years or so earlier than this was used to play back sound effects ;)

I'm not so keen on his mugging to camera though. Probably a struggling actor coming out of him. Maybe that's why he wrote "Ballykissangel" :D"

"Alesis HR-16 Custom Sounds

Give your 90s digital drum machine a new lease of life with classic 80s 8-bit drum sounds!

49 high fidelity samples of 8-bit US drum machines were used to carefully prepare these sound EPROMs for you.

All 49 sounds are replaced with a selection of Linn LM-1, LinnDrum, Linn 9000, Oberheim DMX, Oberheim DX, Sequential Circutis Drumtraks, Emu Drumulator, Emu SP12 and Emu S1200 samples.

The Drumtraks, DMX and DX initially look under represented here but in the real world they do share the same drum and hi-hats sounds apart from the Drumtrak's kick. The Drumtraks percussion is from a Linn LM-1. Also the DMX and DX use the same samples. Therefore, these three drum machines are adequately covered.

Synth Britannia Airs This Friday

via Electronic Battle. For those of you in the UK, Synth Britannia airs this Friday night at nine o'clock, on BBC Four. Mark your calendars as unless something new comes up between now and then, this will be the only post. For the rest of us, here's a trailer [previously posted].

YouTube via Synthasy2000
" In the late Seventies small pockets of electronic artists such as The Human League, Cabaret Voltaire and Throbbing Gristle were inspired by Kraftwerk and J G Ballard to dream of the sound of the future against the backdrop of bleak, high-rise Britain.

Gary Numan's 1979 appearance on Top Of The Pops heralded the invention of synthpop, which would provide the soundtrack as Britain entered a new, ruthless era in the Eighties.

Depeche Mode, four lads from Basildon, came to embody the new sound, while post-punk bands such as Ultravox, Soft Cell, Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark and Yazoo took the synth from the pages of the NME and onto the front cover of Smash Hits.

By 1983 the Pet Shop Boys and New Order were pointing to where the future of electronic music lay in dance.

Contributors to Synth Britannia include Philip Oakey, Vince Clarke, Martin Gore, Bernard Sumner, Gary Numan and Neil Tennant."

BBC Archive Tomorrow's World Moog Synthesiser

YouTube via Synthasy2000
"Synopsis

In this report from a longer programme, Derek Cooper introduces the Moog synthesiser, an instrument that can produce a variety of noises and arrangements, both mimicking real instruments and creating new sounds, all electronically.

Did you know?

Developed by Dr Robert Moog, the Moog synthesiser evolved from a kit known as a Voltage-Controlled Electronic Music Module, which Moog demonstrated in prototype form in 1964. The first production models emerged in 1967, accompanied by a sample record of music composed by Walter Carlos (later Wendy Carlos, after her sex-change operation in 1972). It was Carlos's 1968 album 'Switched-On Bach' that catapulted Moog-produced music into popular culture, though examples of music made on the synthesiser had already been released by The Doors, The Monkees and Simon & Garfunkel, among others.

Voynich Modified Korg Poly 800 Synth Moog Slayer

YouTube via Synthasy2000
"Another Poly 800 to been improved by this simple and effective modification"

Follow-up to this post on the KORG DW-8000. via the AH mailing list where Voynich (Chris Strellis) wrote in regarding discussion of the Poly-800 and DW-8000: "Check out my song "The Power of Nine" to hear the bass line made with a DW8000 in unison.

http://www.myspace.com/strellismusic

Also more of my DW8000 doing the (minimoog) solos in "Airwaves"

http://www.myspace.com/energiefabrik

For the money I'd get a DW8000 hands down, no contest. Cheap, great filters, digital delay-ay-ay-ay and many of the parameter can be controlled over MIDI.

Cheers
Chris"
