M‑VAVE FM‑1 Review & Sound Demo – Fun Pocket FM Synth

video upload by dongchannel

"How does this under‑$70 FM synthesizer perform? Check out this video for a full feature walkthrough, sound demos, and my honest thoughts.

I first spotted the M‑VAVE FM‑1 at this year's Guangzhou Musical Instrument Fair, and picked one up shortly after for about 300 RMB (around $60). The packaging is minimal, the unit itself is compact (16×9 cm), yet it packs everything you'd need. Connectivity is surprisingly generous, with both wired and wireless MIDI and audio support – really well‑equipped for its size.

Inside, you get a 6‑operator FM engine, essentially a recreation of a classic 1980s Japanese synth. It comes with 128 preset sounds, plus an effects chain, a 16‑step sequencer, an arpeggiator, and deeper editing tools. Pair it with an external MIDI keyboard and the playability expands even further.

Are there minor software quirks? Sure. But at this price, they're hardly worth mentioning. Compared to other portable sound gadgets in its class, the FM‑1 is just plain fun. And for the money, the build quality and feature set far exceeded my expectations."

"Legendary Oberheim Xpander 6-Voice Synthesizer desktop module. This is the highly sought-after US Version (with jack labels printed ABOVE the jacks).

[Condition & Operation]

* Operation: Great working condition via MIDI. I have confirmed that the unit receives MIDI and plays audio correctly from both the main outputs and the individual voice outputs (tested and confirmed working via DIR mode).

* Tuning / Calibration: All 6 voices successfully pass the auto-tuning (ALL PASS) without requiring a long warm-up period. As with many vintage Xpanders, the tuning can be sensitive to temperature and may occasionally show a minor FAIL, but it clears and passes successfully once warmed up.

* Buttons & Knobs: All buttons and knobs respond and work. Please note that due to its vintage age, a few buttons may occasionally have a slightly slow response or require a firm press, but they all register properly.

* Display: The VFD display is clear and fully readable. There might be minor cosmetic or pixel imperfections due to age, but it does not affect readability at all during operation.

Inertia Synthesizer

video upload by Zack Berwick

"So after seeing Author and Punisher live earlier this year, I felt inspired to build my own drone machine.

These controllers consists of a 2lbs aluminum rod attached to a optical rotary encoder, while sitting atop thrust ball bearings. This encoder is then wired to an Ardunio Uno R3 measuring the RPM value along with it's rotational direction. I then used that data to control a synth patch I made in Max Msp 9 using the abl.drift and abl.roar objects along with two DMX controlled light panels using the Beam max package.

EVIL PET Granular Synth Feeds Itself, Ambient Exploration

video upload by substatica drones

"An ambient exploration with the ENDORPHIN.ES EVIL PET granular synth. Using the feedback effect of the EVIL PET to feed ambient noise from its onboard microphone back into itself to create wave after wave of ominous ambient swells with no other instruments or audio sources involved.

EVIL PET - https://nightlife-electronics.com/pro...

Ferrofluid Visualizer - https://amzn.to/4wcTg4s

Meet ‪@Endorphines‬ EVIL PET - the creative box that is designed for anybody who has enough fantasy and imagination for using it. EVIL PET can be a polyphonic synthesizer, a granular effect unit, a radio FM tuner, a reel-to-reel recorder, sampler and more.

EVIL PET bites incoming audio into tiny grains and plays them in new, playful, or unexpected ways. Stretch, shrink, or flip the grains to create unique sounds, textures, and effects. Layer grains to make dreamy, glitchy, or swirling soundscapes. It works with any input - guitar, voice, synth, or drums - turning ordinary sounds into something magical."

Korg PE-1000 Polyphonic Ensemble P Synthesizer — EXC Condition with lid and key SN 770697

"Up for sale is a beautiful Korg PE-1000 — a.k.a. Polyphonic Ensemble P — synthesizer from 1976. This one is in excellent condition and comes with the original lid and — a rarity! — the key for the lock. PLEASE NOTE: The stand shown here is not included. It's for display only.

Everything is working properly on this, and it sounds great. Note that the Glide feature — essentially note bend up or down — is activated by a foot switch plugged into the back of the synth. This is by design per the PE1000 owner’s manual on the Korg site. No pedal is provided, but any switching or damper pedal (which I’ve used) will work fine.

Chase Bliss BIG TIME Delay Showcase | Sound Demo (feat. Modal Element One) ‪@ChaseBlissAudio‬

video upload by Davide Puxeddu

"A pure audio demonstration of the Chase Bliss Big Time hybrid analog/digital echo, utilizing the newly released Modal Electronics Element One virtual analog synthesizer as the main sound source.
No talking, just hardware.

Designed in collaboration with John Snyder of Electronic Audio Experiments (EAE), the Chase Bliss Big Time is a true-stereo hybrid echo that revisits the mixed-up, unique circuitry found in rackmount delays from the early 1980s. In that era, advanced analog engineering was functionally used to prop up crude digital systems. The Big Time intentionally embraces and pushes this hybrid architecture to its absolute extremes.

This video showcases how the Big Time's interactive controls and dual stages of analog coloration transform incoming synthesizer signals:

• Stereo Analog Preamp (Color): Adds beautiful, warm saturation to the input stage, designed to handle a wide variety of instruments.
• Feedback Loop Limiter (State): An analog clipping limiter in the delay path that creates everything from smooth compression to crumbling, misbiased overdrive that slowly disintegrates your echoes.
• Cluster Slider: Blends in additional delay taps and diffusion, smudging and expanding the sound into rich ambient delights and multi-tap clusters inspired by vintage space station units.
• Scale & Motion: Controls creative transposition, Thermae-like musical sequencing, and stereo modulation (Sine, Square, Envelope).

Watch how the Big Time's motorized faders react and seamlessly transition through different delay modes—from tight modulations (3-46ms) to Short (46-736ms) and Long delays, across HiFi, Focus, Warm, and Analog voicings.

Providing the core audio tracking is the Modal Element One. Its 8-voice virtual analog engine, morphable filters, and rich stereo waveforms offer the perfect high-quality sonic canvas to test the Big Time's true-stereo capabilities, input saturation, and analog dry-thru.

🎧 Headphones or studio monitors are highly recommended to capture the full true-stereo imaging and analog character of the pedal.

Special thanks to Chase Bliss!"

How Honeysmack jams live techno — 303, 808, modular & more

video upload by Noisegate and Honeysmack

"David Haberfeld — better known as Honeysmack — is a live techno improviser. That means the tracks in his sets are built and arranged in real time in front of an audience rather than pre-sequenced in a DAW. In this studio tour he walks through the hardware he performs with and puts a track together from scratch on the spot.

The rig spans vintage and modern boxes: the Roland TB-303 (the synth-with-a-sequencer that anchors a lot of his sound), Roland's TR-808 and TR-909 drum machines, a Mackie 16-channel mixer, a DJ mixer he's come to use as a performance instrument, Behringer's RD-8 MKII and RD-9 (clones of the 808 and 909, both of which he beta tested), the Behringer Syncussion SY1, a Pro-1 synth and a modular system. Along the way he gets into why the 808 and 909 ended up defining whole genres — and argues it had less to do with how they sounded and more to do with what was simply available at the time.

Honeysmack has a new Live Techno Masterclass coming up on Sunday 26 July at Collingwood Yards, Melbourne:

All Peak Patches in this video were created from scratch. All Peak tracks were recorded through RME audio interfaces (Babyface Pro and Fireface UC) directly into Cubase stereo tracks. There are absolutely no effects on the individual Peak stereo tracks, not even panning, and levels are set to unity gain, to give an as-clear-as-possible impression of the Peak’s sonic potential and limits. On most parts (except intro), there is brickwall limiting on the stereo master, and on most multitrack parts also additional compression and EQ on the stereo master. Guitar parts recorded D.I. into the Fireface UC with a 1973 Stratocaster, several track and send FX on those.

Disclaimer:
I bought the Peak at regular price in 2020. Nobody paid me to make this video or compensated me in any other way, and it’s not monetized. No generative AI was used in the making of this video.
