Akai's MPK49 Nominated for International Dance Music Award

"AKAI PROFESSIONAL MPK49 PERFORMANCE CONTROLLER NOMINATED FOR 2009 INTERNATIONAL DANCE MUSIC AWARD

Winners Selected by DJs and Producers
to be Announced at Winter Music Conference

Cumberland, R.I. (March 12, 2009) – Akai Professional, the name synonymous with music production, announces that the MPK49 performance controller has been nominated for an International Dance Music Award.

The MPK49, nominated as the Best Keyboard or Sampler, is a category defining musical instrument for DJs, keyboard players, producers and other music creators. It marries Akai Professional’s exclusive MPC pads and assignable Q-Link controllers with a 49-key keybed and some key MPC technologies. The MIDI-over-USB controller contains an arpeggiator, MPC Note Repeat and MPC Swing for the creative sequencing feel that has made Akai Professional’s MPC series so important to music production.

The 24th Annual International Dance Music Awards (IDMA) will be presented on March 26, 2009, at the Winter Music Conference in Miami Beach, Fla. The IDMA is the premier awards show for the dance and electronic music industry worldwide. DJs and producers cast their ballots for the most pioneering and elite artists, technology and professionals in the dance-music business.

“The MPK49 has been tremendously successful,” said Adam Cohen, Director of Business Development, Akai Professional. “We are proud to be nominated for this award.”"

Lostbahnhof Presents E-MU Pipeline in conjunction with Shook Mag

via Benjamin:
"Saturday March 14th, LIFE, 2-4 Old St, EC1V 9AA, 9pm-2am, £4

This Saturday we are hosting a number of concerts which will be powered entirely by prototype models of the new E-MU PIPEline wireless system. The prototypes have been sent directly from the factory in Japan, where they were constructed a few days ago. Musicians will transmit to each other via wireless, and a mix will then be broadcast live to the audience, equipped with wireless packs and headphones. The venue is LIFE Bar on Old St (Nearest Tube Barbican!), which resides in the basement of an excellent Japanese Sushi restaurant.

Unboxing pictures of the PIPEline units, just taken, can be found here

Silent Concerts
In the second room of LIFE bar, which doubles up as a shop selling all manner of Japanese goodies and gizmos during the day, we are teaming up with Shook magazine to host some very special Silent Concerts. Between 9pm and 12am a number of very special guests, including experimental touch electronics specialists Oscillatorial Binnage, will be performing to audiences of 20 at a time, streaming audio direct to headphones via wireless. Formed in 2005, Oscillatorial Binnage is a London-based electroacoustic improvisation trio with a neo-primitivistic approach, composed of Fari Bradley, Toby Clarkson, Chris Weaver and Dan Wilson. They work with homemade instruments, video projection, biofeedback, just intonation, gestural interfaces and destabilized equipment responsive to touch.

Some pictures of the instruments they use can be found here

If you drop in, come and say hello, I am Benjamin and I edit the music tech section for Shook Mag, amongst other things.

Facebook event listing is here.

Cheers,
Benjamin

Cinematic session 4 recording the Yamaha GS 2 with Murf Noise rhythm

YouTube via RothHandle

"Hey hey,

These are some short films recorded during the sessions for a soundtrack that me and
Matti Bye are working on. The score is for a Norwegian film called Vegas. It is about three young kids in Bergen, Norway and it really is a moving thoughtful and sometimes feverish film. Its a great film to work with and we are turning the Studio inside out trying to find motifs, moods and atmospheres. So far we have recorded 17 pieces and we feel very confident and pleased with how it is turning out.

This film shows Matti recording the studios Yamaha GS-2. A very odd and interesting FM synth.

This film was shot at my studio, Roth Händle studios. The studio is located in Sundbyberg, Sweden 10 min from the center of Stockholm. The studio is based around the collection of odd instruments, effects and sonics. If you are curious to find out more about the studio please visit www.roth-handle.nu If you are curious about the music that is made there search for Molesome on Myspace.

Thank you for watching."

Nord organs comparison (1st / 2nd gen)

YouTube via Nillerbabsen
"A little comparison for nitpickers - Nord Stage / Electro 2 organ engine vs. C1 / Electro 3 organ engine.
An 88888888 setting is used all the way through except during Drawbars and Percussion. The leslie is set to stop mode except during the Leslie comparison.

Recorded to a Zoom H2 through a Tapco Mix60 mixer.
I am confident that I forgot altering the Leslie speeds, so any difference in speed is due to different programming. The Electro 3 was set to "Clean" in the vintage settings mode.

I just got the beast (Electro 3) yesterday. It blows me away, - the organ is, by all means, far better than the previous one. I will, however, just have to adapt to the new keyboard... which you can probably tell :)"

Scanning Barcode Tattoos with Voice Synthesizer

YouTube via scottblake. via synthtopia
"Some believe barcode tattoos to be a sign of the apocalypse speculated about in the Christian Bible which states people will "receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark of the beast". I personally do not agree with the mythological connection, but imagined what the sinister mark might look like. I use Code 128 style encryption to make temporary bar codes tattoos that can be scanned.
