The Obama Board: Build Your Own Obama Speech

YouTube Uploaded by makemagazine on Jul 31, 2011

"Created by Ashley Lewis, The Obama Board is a new twist on a traditional musical keyboard. Instead of a musical note, each key, when pressed emits the sound of a word from Barack Obama's inauguration speech. Press the keys in the sequence of your choice to create you own speech!"

"Apple has released iMKS-7 for Roland MKS-7

iMKS-7 v1.2 offers:
• Independent and configurable MIDI channels with independent configurable parameters for the MELODY, CHORD and BASS parts
• "Demultiplexing" of some bytes (ex: byte 17) that shares up to 5 parameters. Those bytes are split into individual / independent parameters making the MKS-7 straightforward to control.

4-Controls per Parameter
• Slider: full range parameter value adjustment for a ‘coarse’ workflow
• + button: precise +1 parameter value adjustment for a ‘fine’ workflow
• - button: precise -1 parameter value adjustment for a ‘fine’ workflow
• Parameter default value button: pressing the parameter value label / button sets this parameter to a default value for a faster workflow (ex: DCO wave = Saw; VCF frequency = wide open; etc...)

Parameter Name and Value:
• Name (ex: Saw): as written in the User Manual
• Value (ex: On): as written in the User Manual, dynamically changes when you use one of the 4 controls (slider, + button, - button, parameter default value button)"

Garage / Tag Sale Finds

Just a couple of items I found at two garage sales today. A Yamaha Motif for $2k and a Yamaha PSS-480. I picked up the PSS-480 for $5. It turned out the seller was Discriminate Music and knew about MATRIXSYNTH! :) Small world. There was also a Casiotone there, but I was caught up talking to the seller and didn't take a shot of it.

Vintage 80's Gleeman Pentaphonic synthesizer

via this auction

"This is an early Gleeman that was sent back to the factory (Mr Gleeman's garage) for every update that was offered. It has had the interval tuning mod, the 100 patch memories (50 factory 50 user), and an independent control of white noise (the extra knob pictured) ALL MODS were performed by the Gleeman brothers and work great. I am assuming that because this is an early machine the overlays that would normally be on the back of the machine and around the presetter/joystick were removed to perform the mods and not reattached. Besides the factory mods this machine is all original. You can tell that alot of the casing was hand cut because there is the occasional tooling mark on the casing.

This machine looks sharp and has been well taken care of as you can tell by the pictures. Three reasons to own a Gleeman are the powerful unique sounds, the unique architecture of the insturment, and the hands on interface. These features combine to keep you inspired and playing for hours. I get into what I call "the Gleeman trance" I start playing with it and before I know it five hours have passed.

These machines are about as rare as a unicorn, but rarety has never impressed me. I would put a Gleeman up against the best polysynths ever made any day. It also does not sound like any other synth in my opinion. In a world of software emulators and virtual synths it is important to me to be able to get some unique sounds without much effort.

This machine does have a built in amp and speaker that sounds cool but the best way to hear it is through its quarter inch audio outs. I am sure it is obvious a world class synth sounds better plugged into a console instead of an eight inch car speaker."
