DSI OB-6/Korg MS-20 Mini/Roland TR-8/Strymon Big Sky & Timeline - Big Time, Sky Line

1. DSI OB-6/Korg MS-20 Mini/Roland TR-8/Strymon Big Sky & Timeline - Big Time, Sky Line

A quick little Sunday jam featuring my new favourite synthesizer the DSI/Tom Oberheim OB-6! The OB-6 is holding a pad that's LFO clock synced to modulate various parameters over time. That shares a stereo image with a Strymon Big Sky. The MS-20 is going into the Timeline for rhythmic delays. The TR-8 is on one track, dry, shitty, and over compressed.

2. Korg MS-20 Mini/Dave Smith OB-6/Roland TR-8/Strymon Big Sky - Mason Jar

"It's been a LONGGG time since I posted anything and I've been wanting to do something with drums for awhile now! I've recently been selling off tons of gear to fund a small but high end minimal set up and although I'm not quite there yet, I did manage to throw this together in one quick take. Here's what's happening:

Arturia Beat Step Pro is sending a sequence to the MS-20 mini via midi. The TR-8 is synced to the clock and somewhat pre programmed. The MS-20 is also being sent to a Strymon Big Sky (though I did add some UAD Lexicon 224 to it and the drums afterwords). The OB-6 has a two note, one chord sequence held down consistently that has a tempo synced LFO modulating the filter frequency and type. Everything was done live in one take and no over dubs, though I did add some quick and sloppy automation while mixing.

Everything was tracked through UAD's Studer tape plug-in and the MS-20 had a little compression from an LA-3A. I threw an 1176 on the stereo track of the TR-8, though its not compressing much. On the master bus there's UAD master tape and another 1176 doing some work! I don't mind noise. I don't mind hiss. And I love throwing tape plug ins on everything. Even if it isn't doing much, it comforts me.

I've recently gotten really into Pye Corner Audio's Head Technician side project which used nothing but a 303, 202, and 606. I felt super inspired by that minimalism and hope to get a similar set up going soon! Regardless, that's why my MS-20 probably ended up wishing it was a 303 in this video. Sorry. I'll take a TB-03 for christmas though Santa!"

Korg MS-20 Mini/SQ1 - Dislocate

"I almost sold my MS-20 last week but decided against it and instead picked up an SQ-1. I haven't quite figured out how to reach its full potential yet but I also haven't posted any videos in a long time so I threw this together real quick to change that. It's not a great sequence and it's not well recorded but it does make the MS-20 mini sound fine, which really takes no talent!"

Korg Minilogue - "Stranger Things" & More

1. Korg Minilogue - "Stranger Things"

"I was a little slow obtaining a Minilogue since I live in Canada. I happened to get mine last weekend while binge watching Stranger Things on Netflix. Although this is not what the synth is known for (based on what I've seen), I figured I would take a shot at making something that wouldn't be out of place on a scene in the show. This whole sequence is just one track of the Minilogues audio out. No overdubs. No second synth. No layers, just 1 pure audio track of Minilogue madness. As usual I recorded this to the UAD Studer tape plug in and added some delay and Lexicon 224 reverb for width and depth.

I also own the Korg Arp Odyssey and MS-20 Mini and I must say that at some points this synth can sound very similar to those, even in how difficult it can be to find the sweet spot. When you open this thing up though, it has a sound that's all its own. Personally i'm not a huge fan of poly synths but ANY analog at this price is worth owning. The Minilogue has a very unique character, love it or hate it, you'll be hard pressed to find the sound anywhere else."

2. Moog Sub 37/Roland Juno 106 (Live Synth Jam 2)

A little sunday synth jam featuring the Moog Sub 37 on "lead" and the Roland Juno 106 on some pad type textures.
I really fell in love with the Sub 37 when I realized that 1. Turning the oscillators past 5 will bring them into the "Sub Distortion" zone but if you keep them below 5 it's much much easier to get smooth, classic Moog sounds. I am a bigger fan of the latter. And 2. Being able to route both mod busses to the mod wheel opens up a ton of expressive playing options. Although the patch I designed in this video doesn't really show it off, I just had to mention it. Having filter cut off and vibrato working together is beautiful!

I recorded this using an Apollo Twin and a few UAD plug ins, most notably the Studer Tape Machine, Lexicon 224 and LA-2A!

Recorded live on 27/06/2016!

3. Moog Sub 37/Roland Juno 106 (Live Synth Jam 3)

Basic little jam I had today soundtracking the storm outside my apartment! Massive Lexicon 224 reverb and Moog triangle waves :)

Recorded live on 29/06/2016!

"Up for auction is a used rare vintage Oberheim OB-MX 4-Voice Classy White Analog Rack Synthesizer in Excellent to Near Mint Condition. It is not easy to locate one these days in such a beautiful condition. There are 2 expansion cards in the unit. It needs 4 more cards to max out for 12-voice. Cosmetically it is also in excellent condition to near mint condition with very minor scuffs and scratches. Hard to let this one go, to be honest..."

Akai Tom Cat First Tweak

Published on Nov 3, 2016 zibbybone

"Musician's Friend offered the Akai Tom Cat for $100 as their 'Stupid Deal of the Day' the other day. I figured 'why not' and it didn't disappoint. The kick is pretty aggressive. Some of the knobs don't seem to have any effect, though I haven't RTFM yet. It would have been nice to have individual outs, but it's a solidly built machine. Super slim."
