Simple Wednesday

Published on Mar 29, 2017 Henry Birdseye Jr.

"I thought I'd just sit down and make up some synth-ey tuneage yesterday. I set up two extremely simple sequencer lines and changed the melody, such as it is, by twisting a couple knobs. Then I turned up the delay on the reverb and the notes began to kind of collide and reinforce each other. Anyway, here's a video of me cranking it out, and you can see my complete lack of technique.

plus a bunch of ADSRs and VCAs"

DSI PRO 2 + EPIPHONE ES-339 PRO | GUITAR THROUGH SYNTH ~ Will They Pair? Ep.12

Published on Mar 29, 2017 once upon a synth

"Running a guitar through a synthesizer. Specifically the Epiphone ES-339 Pro through the Dave Smith Instruments Pro 2. The Pro 2 can act as a very powerful guitar pedal with its built in distortion, decimator, hack, drive, dual analog filters, envelope follower and 4 delay lines. On top of that you can utilize the powerful modulation matrix to modulate these effects for some really unique sounds. In this video I go over a few different types of sounds you can make but I only just scratch the surface of what's possible."

Arturia MatrixBrute Firmware Update 1.1

via Arturia

"We are proud to announce the first update to our flagship analog synthesizer. Based on early feedback from MatrixBrute owners, we have refined its firmware to give you the best possible creative experience. Matrix-arpeggiator, real-time recording, preset knob position indication, and more!

Firmware Update 1.1
The MatrixBrute is just at the very beginning of its story but it is already growing stronger and stronger. Discover the new features brought by the firmware update 1.1.

Real-Time Recording

What is the most natural way to record music?

If you instinctively thought “playing”, then no doubt that you will appreciate using the real-time recording mode. Especially as we made our best to make it extremely convenient and super effective.

Set the length of your sequence, press the Record and Play buttons in sequencer mode and let yourself freely ride on immediate inspiration.

Of course, the real-time mode records the notes you play but there is more. Holding a note during several steps automatically ties them while playing a note with a high velocity records an accent on this step. At last the real-time mode also allows you to record the modulation track live by using the Modulation Amount knob.

Matrix Arpeggiator

Transmuting two elements into a brand new one

Our engineer gave in to the practice of a forbidden alchemy that gave birth to the Matrix Arpeggiator, an exclusive creative tool that will stick you to your MatrixBrute for daylong sessions.

Simultaneously press the Arpeggiator and Sequencer buttons to discover this advanced benefit of the Matrix.

The Matrix Arpeggiator play ground is made of up to 16 steps, each represented by a column of the Matrix, and arpeggiated chords of up to 4 notes. The four top rows work just like in standard sequencer mode for these 16 steps. The lower part can be divided in three groups of 4 rows. Each group represents an octave from -1 to +1 and the 4 rows within each of them symbolize the 4 notes of the chord you play on the keyboard.

New KORG Minilogue Editor for Patch Base

via coffeeshopped

"Patch Base 2.5 is now available, and with it comes an editor for the Korg Minilogue. Now you can visualize any patch on your Minilogue, as well as edit all synth and sequencer parameters. Fetch patches from your synth, create new patches from an init patch, or create random patches to discover new sounds. And as always, you can store your entire patch library on your iPad, and organize it into folders. For the next several days, the In-App Purchase for the Minilogue editor is 50% off.

The top half of the editor shows all of the synth's voice parameters, while the bottom half gives controls for editing both notes and motion sequencing data, complete with copy, paste, randomization, and initialization functions. You can create your own sequences in the editor itself, or use it to perfect a sequence you recorded while playing the Minilogue itself."

BURG - beyond the light (system-1, KORG monologue, volca, ms-20)

"If you like my stuff, please support me on http://music.ollilab.com/

I really really really needed to make some more music... was in a very bad mood due to loads of day job work... so I could not get to a point where I was happy with this tune.. so it just kept on going and going and going... and in the end, why not just let it go ? and keep it the way it is.. and not explore more complexities, melodies and just keep it as is? Damn, that was a hard decision.. it might feel incomplete on a first listen, but really for me it's so loaded with feelings, to the brim.

Initially, this track started with a system-1 arpeggiator melody.. that just evolved over time into a layer of basslines and other arpeggios, with a really simple beat.. that never starts, it just stays on a level waiting for the drop that never comes.

I hope you can enjoy this, as this was a painful tune to make.. on many different levels.

Gear used, Roland AIRA, System-1, TR-8, TB-3, KORG volca bass, keys, fm, KORG ms-20, monologue, makenoise 0-coast, microbrute, dreadbox erebus, nord lead A1, elektron analog four, reface CP, SQ-1, beatstep pro + circuit (just sequencer) and the microgranny

FX: Kaoss pad KP3, ms-70 CDR, strymon timeline, bluesky, el capistanearthquaker devices transmisser and space spiral (on the 0 coast), eventide space + mooer reecho and skyverb

VGM #101: Die Anywhere Else (Night in the Woods) Ft. Curious Quail

Published on Mar 29, 2017 Ace Waters

"I had to make a last minute cover this week because my bandmates ended up needing more time for the new IITT track. I reached out on twitter, and someone recommended that I tap into the 'Night in the Woods' OST. I immediately went to a video of Die Anywhere Else and came up with an idea for an arrangement. I went back on twitter and my buddy Mike (Curious Quail) had commented about wanting to do another collab with me on Die Anywhere Else. I told him the timeline, and he made it work, and I am so happy he did because man did those chiptunes really pull the song together. I also wanted some elements of the post-rock shimmer guitar in there, and while working on ideas on my electric, I thought...'Man, Kyle hasn't been on a track in a while, this would be perfect for him!' and he also made some time and put together a great last minute guitar track. Point being, everyone involved in this track is awesome, and I am really happy that we ended up needing to do this song, because it became one of my new favorite VGMs that I have done. Enjoy!"
