UVI Introduces the USQ-1 - Digital-Analog Wave Synth

Published on Apr 5, 2018 UVI

"The Ensoniq ESQ-1 is a special keyboard at UVI. Used by many on our team, including being a personal favorite of one of our founders, our USQ-1 had to be great. We’ve leveraged years of experience with this synth and put our hearts into creating a collection of sounds that we're proud of and that we’re sure you’ll enjoy.

Released in 1986, the Ensoniq ESQ-1 was one of the first affordably priced workstation-class keyboards on the market, combining an 8-voice, multitimbral digital/analog hybrid synthesizer and a featured 8-track sequencer. The ESQ-1's voice architecture allows customization of up to 3 digital oscillators, assignable to any one of 32 waveshapes, followed by a Curtis 4-pole 24dB/oct resonant low-pass analog filter and 15 routable modulation sources. The sound quality of the ESQ-1 is all-at-once digital, warm and unmistakably '80s - a true gem of the time whose sounds still ring with a brilliant depth and character.

USQ-1 offers 268 selectable layers made from over 22,000 samples. To showcase the sonic potential we've included 400 all-new patches including everything from rich bells, strings and leads to thick basses, textured pads and modulating atmospheres. The versatile design of the ESQ-1 allowed us to create both classic sounds that you’d expect from a vintage-era synth and also modern patches utilizing more contemporary sound design techniques. All-in-all these sounds ring with a special "vintage digital” vibe that synths of this era, and the ESQ-1 especially, do so well."

"We're looking at Behringer's latest analog synth - the Neutron Analog Semi Modular Desktop synth.
How good can a $300 synth sound?"

Note the CEM 3340 VCO was used in a number of synths including the Crumar Spirit, Moog Memorymoog, Oberheim OB-8, OB-Xa, and OB-Sx, Octave Plateau's Voyetra 8, Roland's SH-101 & MC-202, Jupiter-6 and MKS-80, and Sequential Circuits Prophet-5 Rev 3, Prophet-10, Prophet-600, Pro-One, and Prophet TS. "Jamming with the Tanzmaus drum machine and a vintage MS20 synthesiser synced together. The MS20 is sequenced by an Analog Four.

A small amount of reverb has been used, no further processing except for normalisation."

Review: Polyend SEQ and POLY: One sequencer to rule them all?

Published on Apr 5, 2018 loopop

"The most obvious feature of Polyend's SEQ sequencer is the 8-track, 32-step grid, along with a great looking aluminum and oak exterior. However, the abundance of control and charm come at a steep price. Is it worth it?

In this video I give a thorough in depth look at SEQ, and it's companion MIDI to CV eurorack module POLY, testing the sequencing of hardware, modular and software instruments.

On the software side, sequencing is quite simple. SEQ can send MIDI data via USB and supports sequencing on 16 separate MIDI channels, nicely controlling Spitfire Audio's Albion One orchestra.

On the hardware side, I test SEQ's ability to simultaneously sequence standalone synths and eurorack modules using its companion POLY module. Using all three outputs - USB and two MIDI ports - SEQ is able to orchestrate the Novation Circuit, Elektron Digitone, Moog Mother-32 and DFAM, and Plaits from Mutable Instruments, with many channels to spare.

Polyend's POLY eurorack MIDI to CV module works nicely as well, both complementing SEQ and as a standalone module. In the video I show how it can be used to play the three oscillators on Mother-32 and DFAM polyphonically.

SEQ emphasizes simplicity over features. Advanced sequencers such as those in Elektron machines have a longer checklist of features, but there's something about the broad view of multiple patterns at once, sprinkled with a few nifty tricks for quick and easy sequencing, that creates a very compelling environment for live performance."

Eurorack Modular Trance Live Performance

Published on Apr 5, 2018 chisel316

"My first try at a full Trance song using the Eurorack modules plus the Korg Volca Sample for drums. The drums are actually triggered from the Eurorack using Ddrum ddti CV trigger to MIDI box that is just off the camera on the left (you can see all 10 patch cables wrapped together).

Patch design:

Pamela's New Workout is the master clock and is triggering drum samples in the Volca, the sub/acid bass sequence in the Kraftzwerg, the mid bass sequence in the o_C which is sequencing the Disting mk2 saw wave through one side of the Korgasmatron low pass filter into the uVCA and the Disting mk4 which is sequencing the uBraids supersaw through the other side of the Korgasmatron low pass filter into the uVCA. o_C sequence has its own envelopes, while the Disting VCF/VCA are modulated using the Make Noise Function. All audio outputs are mixed in the Doepfer 138c where they are sent into the Behringer UMC 1820 audio interface connected to my iPad mini 4.

iOS effects:
Audio Damage Dubstation 2 (Delay)
DDMf Envelope (Reverb)
FAC Chorus
FAC Maxima (Maximizer)

Trance arp sequence:
