"How To Make a Track is a series that offers an in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at how the world’s best producers make their music. In this episode, we visit the Berlin studio of Hayden Payne aka Phase Fatale, a Berghain resident with a love of ’80s post-punk, industrial and EBM.

On his new album Scanning Backwards, released earlier this year on Ostgut Ton, Payne explores how sound has been used to try to influence human behaviour throughout history, from the soundsystems that power nightclubs to the mind-control experiments conducted by the CIA as part of the top secret MK-Ultra program in the 1950s and ’60s.

Payne shows us how his fascination with the effects of different sonic frequencies informs his music, whether he’s scanning wavetables on his Waldorf Microwave XT synth or using guitar feedback to create background ambience.

Waldorf PPG Wave 2.v VST Synth Demo 1 - Wavetable Goodness

"Hear a range of sounds from the Waldorf reincarnation of the PPG Wave 2.3 wavetable synth in VST form. This is the Edition 2 LE version whose only limitation is total polyphony which is capped at 8 voices. Bristling with digital sizzle and icy flourishes thanks to its 32 wavetables containing 64 waves in each wavetable. In the sounds tested so far, this VST recreation excels at synth keys, leads and pads.

Those pleasing digital articulations are caused by the 8-bit (relatively low-res) interpolation between single-cycle waveforms contained in the wavetable as the synth scans it. The digital nature of its wavetables is tamed by an emulation of the SSM 2044 Voltage Controlled Filter.

"SM Granita is a granular synthesizer. It’s a remix of Monolake’s Granulator II with focus on easy texture creation. Drag any sample and enjoy. It adds a luxury reverb and an audio pitch shifter for texture intonation, very useful in less experimental contexts.

Size: defines how many (very short) crossfading sample chunks are played back per second. High values: more chunks with shorter duration each are created.
Pos: file position. It can either be set by moving this parameter or by clicking on the waveform.
Spread: enables the slight detuning of the grain frequency for the left and right channel.
Lush: nw.gverb~’s decay time + mix. I like to have just 1 control, but you can easily add both in presentation.
ADSR: classic amp envelope.
Pitch (semitones + cents): audio pitch shifter for instrument tuning. Use Ableton Tuner Effect device (watch the demo video above). It introduce some latency and adds weird color at extreme values.
Voices: number of polyphonic voices.
Volume: ehm… main volume."
