Terry Riley, Keyboard Study no.1 (as generative modular patch)

"There are several modular synth renditions of Terry Riley’s 'In C' out there, but none (as far as I know) of his keyboard studies, so here goes…

Although Riley played this piece in 1964-65, he did not write it down until the 1990s, and only published it in 2015: https://www.boosey.com/shop/prod/Rile...

His instructions in this book are pretty cryptic, so I try to explain the piece at the beginning of the movie.

I tend not to use MIDI in my modular (except when connecting it to an iPad or keyboard etc), as it’s less malleable than CV. But Expert Sleepers’ addition of a 'MIDI Player' algorithm to the Disting EX gave me the idea to use multiple MIDI files in a more generative way. Thank you to the tireless Os at Expert Sleepers for solving my technical issues (see Disting EX forum on modwiggler).

"Perfect Circuit asked me if I'd like to take part in their 'artist picks' gear of the year video for the end of 2023. I said yes, while pondering what gear has brought me joy and lots of nice music making this year ... that bit of gear was the Intellijel Cascadia, which I love coupling with FX but for this particular bit of music making I went with the T Rex Replicator Junior.

A joyous, feature packed and versatile synthesizer and a wonder of lo fi tape delay, a great pairing! So I made the video for Perfect Circuit, made some music, made a patch breakdown and also made a PDF Patchbook outlining all sorts about the patch, alternative gear, mastering electronic music and more. In the purest style of Dave Smith, Prophet-6 is a tribute to the classic polysynth of the 80s, but elevated to the category of electronic instrument of the 21st century, "the result of our effort to build the modern analog polysynth with the most incredible sound", in the words of the great designer.

The Sequential Circuits Prophet-6 synthesizer retains the best details of the vintage Prophet-5 - truly analog VCOs, filters and VCAs - and enriches them with advanced effects, a polyphonic step sequencer and other goodies.

Oberheim & Sequential OB-6: Analog power on every side / potencia analógica por los cuatro costados

Developed in direct collaboration with Tom Oberheim, OB-6 takes its inspiration from this master's original designs to deliver "authentic vintage SEM tones with the stability and flexibility of modern technology".

The OB-6 architecture integrates two oscillators per voice plus a sub-oscillator, with saw, variable pulse and triangular waveforms (this only in OSC-2) – all of them continuously variable for greater harmonic diversity. Each voice passes through a 12dB multimode filter (with low-pass, -high, -band, and band-reject responses), inspired by the original SEM circuits. And of course, the analog route is completed with Voltage Controlled Amplifiers (VCA).
