Serge GTS (eurorack) goes FM

video upload by Serge Modular | Random*Source

"ow does a slope generator sound? Here two Serge GTS are used as VCO(s), mixer, envelope generator, filter and finally for FM (with an added VCFS), controlled via 1V/Oct and Midi / keyboard.

The Serge GTS is a complete redesign of the famous Serge Dual Universal Slope Generator (DUSG) by Serge himself - with a new core, optimized for speed and tracking. Like some of the clones it can be used for CV, but provides exceptional audio performance: transient rise times as fast as 12µs and a maximum cycle speed of 28kHz."

From Shattered Seas - OP-1 Field EP

video upload by tarekith

"I recorded this EP entirely on the Teenage Engineering OP-1 Field during three days of intense winter storms on the Oregon Coast. All of the photos in this video were also taken by me during that same three day period. For free high quality audio versions of this EP, please visit: https://tarekith.com"

Flip your arps! Generating complex arpeggios with soft sync

video upload by Electrum Modular

"To begin phasing out my Behringer Neutron (the first piece of electronic gear I ever bought, back in 2018), I’ve just acquired two new oscillators: Intellijel’s Dixie II+ and Shakmat’s Banshee Reach. Both feature a 'soft sync' option, whereas Neutron has only hard sync. Oscillator sync is generally touted for its distinctive timbral effects. I’ve never seen any discussion of its use at lower (sub-audio) frequencies. But looking at its effect on the waveform, I reckoned soft sync might generate some interesting arpeggios. Here are the results of my experiments!

NOTE: the folded shape of these arpeggios led me to also experiment with using a wavefolder (Intellijel’s Bifold). This worked – and has the advantage of preserving the period/frequency of the arpeggio, and thus the time signature. But as you increase the fold, the arpeggio begins to sound too chaotic. I guess there is a sweet spot (or range) between a bog-standard arpeggio and a formless sequence of notes.

Other modules used:
Make Noise's Maths
Intellijel's Scales
Mutable Instruments' Plaits
Expert Sleepers' Disting EX
ALM's Pamela's New Workout
Low Gain's Short Bus
Alright Instruments' Chronoblob"

Carol of the Bells - Synthesizer Version

video upload by Bendrr Music

"Christmas is my favorite time of year, and I thought what better way to celebrate than to cover the Trans Sibersian Orchestra rendition of Carol of the Bells, but with synthesizers!

Hope you enjoy it, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!"

Christmas Beat Tape "Burn the Tree" - Made with Novation's Circuit Rhythm - Nug Chompah

video upload by Nug Chompah

"A Christmas inspired beat tape I put together entirely on the Circuit Rhythm. A sampled journey through 15ish beats all with a merry yuletide bent, performed in one shot by Nug Chompah.

For an idea of what is going on, the Circuit Rhythm has 8 sample slots and about 300secs of sample time, each sample slot being represented 1-8 by the number switches. The first row of coloured pads is those sample slots. Across the tape I have the kick in sample 1, the snare in sample 2, the hats in sample 3, the sleighbells in sample 4. Sample slots 5-8 are for everything else, bass, melody, vocals etc etc. I play out each beat, and then move on to the next one. I'm recording the output of the Rhythm into Ableton Live, and then triggering the movie quotes on my Push. If not for the sample length limitations of the Circuit Rhythm, I conceivably could have performed this whole tape with it entirely."

Strega RainForest

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"I am preparing a 40 minute gig for January 2024, which is going to be a bit like a live album also composed live. During the sessions I had a happy accident with Strega. I got this amazing 'rainforest' stacked with tropical birds (with some help from Imitor Versio and Desmodus). So in this video you'll get a sneak peak. I had no idea where it came from and the original session wasn't exactly filmed to explain things. But I figured it out. So the second part is about recreating the patch. I think creating organic life out of a VCO and a crappy delay definitely qualifies as alchemy. Or witchcraft. Today, Strega is a good witch."

What is The Vanilla Synthesizer? It's Ready, That's What

via the STG Soundlabs/muSonics Electronic Newsletter:

Is it The Vanilla Synthesizer or the muSonics TVS?

I started working on this project a year and a half ago.

Originally my thought process was to make a new American format synthesiser that could be sold as modules, kits, and bare boards. I was concerned about the future of the format, and I felt a new line of basic modules and infrastructure at a variety of price points was important. I still do.

STG Soundlabs was a failure because I made things that ultimately the eurorack market simply did not want. Yes, I sold some, and will continue to maintain the line as best as I can, but it's very hard to find photos of eurorack installations with STG Soundlabs modules in them, but rare to find a nice big man-sized synthesiser without my modules in it.

Another thing I wanted to do was teach myself how to do my own engineering. It didn't start that way, but it became that way. I'd been a hardware product developer since 2005 but never actually laid out a circuit board. That is no longer true, and I've done things beyond this project that I haven't even talked about.
