Electronic Perspectives: Vintage Electronic Musical Instruments by Tom Rhea - New Pics

You might remember Electronic Perspectives: Vintage Electronic Musical Instruments by Tom Rhea previosly posted here.

Heath Finnie wrote in to remind me of the book and I noticed a few new pics of the inner pages have gone up on the Electronic Perspectives website. I thought they deserved a new post. If you are not familiar with the book, here are some details:

"Forty-five years in the making, Electronic Perspectives: Vintage Electronic Musical Instruments contains all of Tom Rhea’s fifty-two influential columns that were first published in Keyboard magazine from 1977-1981. This 400-page tome greatly expands on the original content with updated information and hundreds of newly restored images. Electronic Perspectives: Vintage Electronic Musical Instruments includes two CDs of unearthed recordings; spanning multiple eras of electronic music. All in a gold foil-embossed hardcover book, housed in a deluxe slipcase."

Note Tom Rhea helped design the Crumar Spirit with Bob Moog and Jill Scott. He also penned a few classic synthesizer user manuals. You can find additional posts mentioning him here.

You can find the book on Electronic Perspectives here.

Ambient with Biset Tree\FM-OP\Dark Energy\SurgeXT\Instruo\Flute

video upload by Omri Cohen

"I'm supposed to be on Easter vacation with the kids, but after playing a bit with Tree from Biset, I had to record something with it... Basically, it will generate sequences according to the growth and movement of branches, and I use it polyphonically to sequence an FM-OP and Dark Energy.

I added a bass with a couple of modules from Instruo, and another melody line with another chain with VCV modules and a bit of SurgeXT.

I also had to play my flute to this a bit, so I processed it with Prince Of Perception, Nimbus (Clouds), and a rind modulator following the pitch of the flute.

To this I added some noises with the Befaco Noise Plethora module.

Other than VCV Rack, I used the Wavesfactory Cassette VST for adding some analog feel, and the Valhalla Delay and Supermassive."

In 2009 I recreated many favorite 80s drumbeats on the then new Korg Electribe samplers, sampling the Linndrum, Oberheim DMX, Roland CR78, TR808 and more. I copied the patterns by ear and also tried to catch the vibe of each original track as much as possible, using only the internal EQ and sampler fx. Later I expanded the series to synthesizer medleys and full tracks. It led me to a lot of contacts, collaborations and releases.

Now I wanted to reboot this in portable music production. Jim Audo's GR16 iPad app felt very much like the Electribe SX in use. So I started transferring my old beats to the newer medium, improved and expanded them to do another series of classic drumbeats, to inspire new music.

The Novation Launchpad Pro Mk3 integrates well with it and gives more tactile feel to it, as with the Electribes. It's however not necessary to use it.

The result is a great sounding retro beat machine that now even fits on an iPhone.

And yes, that's an LM2 at the back, not LM1.

Enjoy
