"A few years back I reviewed what was probably the most underwhelming piece of gear at the time - the original Arturia Drumbrute. This 2016 drum machine seemed like a dream come true: fully analog, great sequencer, one-knob-per-function UI and a design that pleases the eye of normal people and satisfies the basic instincts of synth nerds.

The problem with this instrument: it sounded almost comically bad and might be the only Bad Gear protagonist I didn’t make any real music with.

Although I sent it back after reviewing it, this cursed drum machine kept on haunting me and when I found one on Reverb for the price of a Volca I might have been hovering over the BUY button a little too hard. Was this the worst purchase ever?

"The MCO (mk II) is a highly versatile digital VCO and voice module inspired by 90s/00s digital synths shrunk into just 6HP. It offers a broad collection of unique, high-quality synth voices, each with extensive, customizable parameters. Here we explore a few patches using the new AEIOU voice synthesizer engine. To add the new synthesis engine to your MCO download the latest firmware update! (linked below)

The AEIOU voice is a vocal synthesis engine that uses band pass filters to mimic the formants of a human voice for a range of phonemes. Morphing between the two phoneme parameters using LFOs, the built in envelope or external modulation can produce any sound from robotic whisper textures, to background chatter, to simple pronounced words.

The MCO is designed to be familiar, quick and easy to use with a high resolution colour display and a rich visual user interface. Each voice includes extensive customizable parameters that can be directly controlled or modulated through assignable internal and external sources. Certain per-voice parameters support audio-rate modulation, including FM, sync, and DSP. Each voice also supports up to four-voice chords, external-triggered envelopes, multiple LFOs, and dual audio outputs for comprehensive desktop like synth functionality.

"Here we have OCTA from NANO Modules. A set of 4 classic analog drum circuits, authentically taken from the Roland TR-808. We have the kick, snare and both closed & open hi hats. There's added controls, modular volume/drive per track and added section of compression, EQ and side chain envelope following. In this video I take them through classic 808 beats and sounds, expand them with modular mixing and we even turn it into one big pitch tracking (despite lack of pitch CV) bass oscillator ... I don't think anyone will be expecting the doom-laden ambient soundscapes from 808 drums. As always give these patches and ideas a go with your drum modules and enjoy OCTA!"
