NAMM Museum of Making Music ARP: The Innovator, The Instruments, The Impact. Update

This is a follow-up to this post.

Additonal details on the upcoming two day event via The Alan R Pearlman Foundation follows:

ARP: The Innovator, The Instruments, The Impact Opening August 9

We invite you to step into the world of innovation with our new exhibition "ARP: The Innovator, The Instruments, The Impact." The impact of ARP synthesizers and the legacy of their innovator Alan R. Pearlman (1925-2019) was vast and deeply influential. From progressive rock and jazz to pop, film, and experimental music, ARP instruments helped shape the sound of a generation and inspired countless artists.

Curated by Brian Kehew, the exhibition brings together a stunning array of instruments, vintage media, and behind-the-scenes insights.

Guest Curator: Brian Kehew

Brian Kehew is a Los Angeles-based producer, engineer, and co-author of Recording The Beatles. Kehew’s deep expertise as a synthesizer programmer and performer with artists such as The Who and The Moog Cookbook brings a uniquely informed perspective to this presentation.

C15 Tutorial: Creating Resonator Sounds in Split Mode

video upload by Nonlinear Labs

"In this tutorial Raffaele Colasacco explains the very unusual possibility of creating resonator sounds in the split mode of the C15, where you can, for example, create resonances of pressed keys on the left side by playing on the right side.
Tim Sund then plays numerous examples in which this new function is used effectively.

TR-808 Shootout // Can they live up to the LEGEND??

video upload by Starsky Carr

"The legendary Roland TR80*8 up against the *Roland TR-8S and the Behringer RD-8 Looking only at the sounds - or listening to them! - do they come anywhere close?

The TR-8S uses Roland's ACB technology, which is the same as the TR-8, Roland Cloud plugins and the Boutique TR-08 - so this has you covered for all of those. I'm using the RD-8 Mk2 - you cna tell because its got the black buttons, Mk1 had white.

I've gone through all the sounds (forgot the maracas in the demo bit) and showed how they differ. Taking into consideration no 2 808s will be identical I think they both stand up very well to the orginal TR808.

But if you want the exact sounds...

Introducing MUM M8 DSP - Low Pass Filter Plug-in

video upload by ALM TV

"‘MUM M8 DSP’ is a low pass filter plug-in emulating the filter used in the classic Akai S950 12 bit sampler with the addition of resonance, saturation and bit depth reduction. This in turn emulates our MUM M8 eurorack module which uses a similar filter design.

In this video we take a quick look at the MUM M8 DSP processing multiple sources in Ableton Live.

The low pass filter gives the recognisable super smooth vacuum like tone sucking sound which works magic on complex sources. The addition of clipped overdrive and intentionally aggressive self oscillating resonance compliment the smooth filter core by juxtaposing it into more wasp like territory with acidic squeals and a more gritty sound.

Unique to the plug-in are a clock bleed switch, introducing audible artifacts into the filter path emulating some of the quirks of the original hardware, and a Bit Depth control for downsampling the input for a more character-rich output.

‘MUM M8 DSP’ offers an authentic digital emulation of the original hardware, recreating its distinct sonic character for use for use in your DAW.

Thanks for watching!"

Love when something that looks completely alien ends up sounding like a real, playable instrument.
