High on Modulation: Programming Classic 80s Brass Sounds, Synthesis as a Folk Art, and More

video upload by Keith Crosley

"Let's get inspired by vintage VHS synth nerdery and dig into some modulation mayhem! I accidentally make a reaction video to a wonderfully unhinged 80s Steve Porcaro synth-programming tape, explain Korg multi/poly modulation (hey there @robst247 ), and put some of Steve's ideas into action with a classic Toto-style “Africa” brass with Arturia Pure LoFi. I also talk about how I think about synthesizer programming, answer the question, “What is synthesis?” and talk about synth programming as a folk art. So grab a Coke (or other stimulant of choice) and join me for a MODULATION-A-GO-GO episode of your sniff favorite talky synthesizer content show!"

Steve Porcaro - Star Licks Instructional Video [COMPLETE] [60FPS]

video upload by boomer

"This is the complete Steve Porcaro star licks instructional video. I bought this tape from japan (hence the subtitles) and ripped it myself, so its as good quality as i could get it. Because it's from japan, it's technically called "SUPER TECHNICAL APPROACH," but its the same thing as star licks."

“Chain Reaction” Brainwaves controlling a Buchla Morphagene CV/MIDI setup & INA GRM Tools Atelier 🧠✨

video upload by Stephano Gavilanes

"Biofeedback exploration using brainwaves via the BI1 Brainterface to control a hybrid CV/MIDI Buchla setup with the Fake Noise - Morphagene, Magnetic Freak - Gaussian, and five instances of INA GRM Tools 'Atelier' via MIDI👌🏽

Original sample sounds produced with an EMS VCS3, a Buchla 200 system, and later processed with Atelier. Timpani type percussion extracted from my track “Maestro” which was created by accident with only a 212 Dodecamodule and a Folktek Resonant Garden as a feedback patch, loaded into Morphagene.

Hope you enjoy it! 🤙🏼

Wind Recordings and Lo-fi Pitch-shifted Prophet-10 | Platform 2^5 2025-11-19 by atnr

video upload by atnr

"This piece combines field recordings captured in a windy park with sounds from the ‪@SequentialLLC‬ Prophet-10, processed through ‪@ChaseBlissAudio‬ MOOD MKII, LOST+FOUND, and ‪@strymon‬ blueSky.

The Prophet-10 is connected to all three effects units.
During the performance, synth pads are played while the filter is opened and closed to create movement. The MOOD MKII adds delay, and its CLOCK control is adjusted to introduce pitch shifting.
The LOST+FOUND provides additional lo-fi character using the GEN-LITE effect, and further pitch shifting is applied with ORCHESTRAL SWELL.
Finally, the blueSky is used to add reverb.

Additional layers from the MOTIF-RACK ES and Massive X are arranged within the DAW to complete the atmosphere."

Synthesizing with Moog | Lesson 7: Patterns

video upload by Moog Music

Synthesizing with Moog

"'Synthesizing with Moog' invites you on an enlightening journey that answers a complex question: how exactly do synthesizers work?

In the seventh and final episode of Synthesizing with Moog, we zoom out from the discreet moment of the note and look at how the synthesizer creates patterns and musical phrases. The sequencer was initially created by Don Buchla as a rudimentary preset storage system, sending preset voltage values to various parameters of the synthesizer. When a square wave oscillator (or clock) signal is used to address the stages of the sequencer, melodies begin to emerge, bringing us back to the fluidity of time.

Written, hosted, filmed, and produced by our team of electronic musical instrument experts, this new seven-part educational video series makes learning the fundamentals of synthesis accessible, engaging, and inspiring for anyone curious about science, music, and how the two worlds converge. We set out to create a series that brings you as much technical knowledge as it does entertainment and joy as you watch each episode!

We invite you to follow along with us at home with a printable worksheet corresponding to the contents of each weekly episode. https://inmusic.to/bdhnff3m
