M-VAVE Just Released NEW Firmware for the FM-1!

video upload by PhilipsKnobs

You can find the M-VAVE FM-1 on Amazon.

"M-VAVE has released FM1 Open, its own firmware project for the FM-1, along with a browser-based Workbench and development resources for the community.

In this video, I install FM1 Open on an FM-1 running the original stock V15 firmware, try out some of the included demo projects, and take a quick look around the Workbench.

I'll also talk about what makes this release interesting, how it fits into the existing custom firmware scene, and what it could mean for the future of the FM-1.

I've only just installed FM1 Open while making this video, so this isn't a full review. All the sounds at the beginning are from the demo projects included with the firmware. I'll need more time with it before I can say how it compares with the other firmware options.

OPEN-1 Concept

video upload by RedtailWorks

"OPEN-1: one synth, every firmware.

OPEN-1 is an idea for an open, entry-level synth: a 37-key instrument that becomes a new machine every time you pick a firmware from the SD card. In this concept video it runs a simulated HYP-1, in time with a real HYP-1 live take.

IDEAS PHASE: OPEN-1 is not a product yet. Nothing is for sale, the renders are concept art, and every spec and price below is a target, not a promise. I'm sharing it early to find out what you'd want from it.

TARGET SPECS
480 MHz Cortex-M7 (STM32H750), open toolchain (the FM-1 runs at 240 MHz)
32 MB of working memory for long delays, loops and samples (the FM-1 has about 432 KB)
16 MB of firmware flash plus a microSD library: keep several firmwares installed, swap from the menu
24-bit stereo audio in AND out, so it can be an effects box too
MIDI in and out (3.5 mm TRS), USB-C device and USB-C host
37 RGB-lit silicone keys, 8 velocity pads, 8 endless encoders, a thumbstick and 2 spring levers
4" 480×320 IPS screen, built-in speaker, headphone out, 3000 mAh battery
Wired only, no Bluetooth: lower latency, simpler to build
Target price: under $200

OPEN BY DESIGN
An open SDK and a browser emulator, so developers can build firmware before the hardware ships
A firmware jam before launch, with a community-voted firmware pack preloaded on every unit
Launch firmware ported from the FM-1 family: HYP-1, LOF-1, ECO-1 and GRAV-1

Testing an old VCO - Livewire Audio Frequency Generator & a simple melodic drone

video upload by DreamsOfWires

"I've been tinkering with some of my older, discontinued and obscure modules recently, so I decided to share some of my experiences. Not technical or user guides, just self-indulgeance. This time it's the Livewire Audio Frequency Generator that gets the perpetual noob treatment, an huge, flexible, and pretty damn good saounding VCO with wave-shaping, sub oscillator (both square and triangle), and a bunch of fixed or variable waveforms.

Key features of this are the 'Animated Pulses' and 'Alien Saws', which are both affected by the 'animation section'. Each consist of two waves overlapping eachother, and the 8 pots to the right control the pulse width and phase position of both, but on the higher and lower portions of the waveforms separately... which of couse can all then be modulated! Bonkers! It sounds great though, and you could lose yourself for some considerable time just listening to how these 8 controls affect the timbre of the two waveform outputs.

As always, running the module through my AJH Synth modules never dissappoints - totally vintage charcter and warmth, with no shortage of functionality and physical control. A great-sounding VCF based on the Musonics (pre-Moog) Sonic V, and a VCA based on the early Minimoog, complete with amp-like overdrive when driven hard. The Ring SM is also based on the Moog CP-3 mixer, with -1 & -2 sub-octave generator, and 3-axis ring modulator based on the EMS Synthi/VCS3.

Gear used:
Livewire Audio Frequency Generator V2
AJH Synth Sonic XV diode filter, Dual LFO, Sample Hold & Noise, Ring SM, Discreet Cascaded VCA.
Cosmotronic Cosmix Pro
Happy Nerding FX Aid (as reverb)
Expert Sleepers Disting Mk4 (as WAV recorder)
CASA Modular acrylic case powered by Konstant Lab StrongPWR.
No post-processing, just the audio straight from the modular."
