New Yamaha TQ5 Shot

I posted about the Yamaha TQ5 just yesterday. Well reptar who started the thread on VSE put up a shot of his turned on. I didn't relize that black bar was actually a screen. Pretty cool. Ah, the things that fascinate me... : )

Corky Burger's Modular Mayem

Steiner Master's Touch filter/cv/gate Breath Controller

Interesting piece currently on the *bay. Title link takes you to shots saved for posterity.

From the auction: "This auction is for one vintage Steiner (Crumar) Master's Touch breath controller in great functional and okay cosmetic condition. Basically it's a voltage controlled resonant filter (VCF) and voltage controlled amplifier (VCA) with rubber tubes and mouthpieces that you use to control the cutoff ("S.E.D." in Steiner terminology) and gate the volume. Runs on 110V US voltage and has built in power supply/cord.
There's an input for an audio signal to be processed by the VCF and VCA, and outputs for the processed, dry and mixed signals. CV outputs are also generated by the mouthpieces ("breath" and "bite") and these can be used to control external synthesizers or effects via cv or pedal inputs. There is also a little rubber pad by which you can generate CV via a fingertip along with both positive (v-trig for old Rolands and Arps) and short-to-ground (s-trig for old Moogs, Korgs and Yamahas) gate outputs available simultaneously. Little red LEDS show the status of the trigger and breath outputs. Very versatile and incorporates very well with any modular system. Extremely easy to use. "

Amazing new Buchla site containing a wealth of Buchla information and services. There is a drop down list of modules including detailed information and images.

Electric Music Box offers repairs and restorations of classic Buchla intruments, as well as the purchase, selling and trading of these rare and coveted pieces.

Note: Rick asked me to note that he had to whip the site up quickly as Keyboard Magazine linked to it; currently Mac Safari and Firefox are a bit flakey. He is aware of the problem and will fix it when he gets a chance. IE works fine.

The Mighty Serge - Kevin Fortune Speaks

Via John P on AH. Title link takes you there. Some really nice shots after the hop.

Chris Strellis - The Release featured on Arturia

Back on September 6, 2005 Chris Strellis gave me the go ahead to post his tribute to the late Bob Moog, titled The Release. It's an amazing track using the Arturia Minimoog and Modular V soft synths along with samples of Bob Moog. Arturia just put it up under their The Highlight of the Month section. If you haven't heard the track yet, you owe it to yourself to do so. It is one of the best tributes to the late Bob Moog that I've heard; a beautiful and powerful piece. I do not like to favor one person's tribute over another, but this really is THE tribute piece in my opinion. The samples and flow of the piece are breathtaking, especially with the samples of Bob and finally when the pads come in. When the pads do come in, I can't help but think of Bob's passing and his release from our world and time. Title link takes you there - scroll down to the bottom of the page for a link to the track (if you catch this post after the link is gone, you can also check out my old post which includes some comments from Chris Strellis as well). And of course there is Chris Strellis' website.

Buchla 700

Shot of the Buchla 700 of the Audities Collection. Sent to me from rick, echo7even. Thanks rick!

Update: More on the Buchla 700

Snip from More on the Buchla 700:

"THE 700'S ARCHITECTURE includes four dedicated computers, each of a different nature, and each optimized to its particular function. The nerve center of the instrument is a general purpose digital computer. Responsible for user communication, data processing, and supervisory control, this "host" computer can be programmed to accommodate varied musical needs.

A second computer "massages" incoming data. It directs conversion of analog voltages into digital form, discards redundant information, and transmits essential data to the host computer.

Receiving instructions and data from the host, a third computer (called the multiple arbitrary function generator) directs the instantaneous progress of 190 acoustic variables, each with a time resolution of 1/2000 of a second. This facility enables specification of complex sonic detail and extends the possibilities for expressive control.

A fourth computer, essentially a pipelined digital signal processor (DSP), is responsible for producing the 700's twelve voices. Built into this computer are unusually powerful algorithms for sound generation, including frequency modulation, waveshape interpolation, and timbre modulation (unique to the Buchla, this technique significantly augments the electronic vocabulary."

The Packrat

Just realized I haven't put up a Packrat post yet. Sheesh! If you haven't seen it, you're missing out. They are featured in Keyboard Magazine. Title link takes you to David C. Lovelace's website.

Update: Click here to see it full size. "Tribute to the late great Bob Moog."

A Nifty Keytar and the Packrat on Halloween

David C. Lovelace, creator of the Packrat just posted a comment on my wench post. He will be dressing up and donning this wicked beast of a keytar for Halloween tonight, a Korg RK100. Sweet!

Seiko DS-250

I was poking around the Packrat's Dave's Music site and stumbled onto this. Intersting piece. Title link takes you to Dave's story on this including a sample.

All bow to our Wench : )

Hey, she named the shot, not me. : ) The lovely Cikira. If you do not know who Cikira is you've been living in a cave, or... just check out her site. : ) She also runs SynthSights. We all bow to Cikira if we know what's good for us.

Title link takes you to a bigger shot. I see an XTk. : )

BTW, if you have any Halloween shots you want to share with of course, synths, send them my way, or feel free to put them up on SYNTHWIRE.

Happy Halloween!

Thought I'd put up a Happy Halloween post and shot of my favorite Halloween synth, the Waldorf XTk. Title link takes you to the old Waldorf XTk page saved before they went under. I remember sending Waldorf a glowing email when I received my XTk. They actually put it up under user comments on the site with only a few others. It was an amazing honor for me.

Happy Halloween! Sonic State Turns 10! Happy Birthday Guys!

Just got my Sonic State new letter and read this little bit:

"10 Years On
Coming up to our 10th year on-line I was feeling a little nostalgic and found a fun resource for seeing what was going on on the site 10 years ago today.
Take a trip down memory lane.."

Congrats Sonic State! I can't overstate what your site means to me. It's where it all really began for me. In 1986 I bought my first synth, an Oberheim Matrix-6. I saved for nearly a year and combined birthday and christmas presents with a lot of begging to get it. I went off to college, got a job and then realized, hmm... I wonder what's going on in the synth world nowadays. A friend talked me into getting a Prophecy at the time and getting back into synthesis. So, I started looking. I ran into a little site called Sonic State, which became home to me. I set up matrixsynth.com as my portal in October of '97 and put Sonic State on the top of the list. It has sat there unmoved since.

I also became active on the-gas-station and hung out on The Olde Oberheim Abbey with people I fondly remember like Steveo (still active), AdamT, Kitty, Consequence (now Moogulator of the great Sequencer.de) and of course the infamous B3Tech, and the seldomly seen Seldom Seen Slim. Man I miss his posts. If I remember correctly even some of the analog gurus like Mark Pulver and MC posted often.

Anyway, those were great times. Sonic State is still going strong and I wish them another successful 10 years. Happy Birthday and Happy Halloween! What a day for a birthday. : )

Vogelsheiss Outed

I've been randomly putting up some amazing demos by Vogelsheiss. Well, his treasure chest has just been outed on AH. Title link takes you there. The coolest thing about this is he lists the gear he used for each track. I really wish more artists did this in the synth community.

BTW, an easy way to get me to post your music is to do just that. If you have a track or more that uses a given synth or two, feel free to send it my way. As long as I'm not overwhelmed, I'll post it. Or... You can always sign up on SYNTHWIRE and post away yourself. : )

EMS Patch Sheet

Via AH. The good old days. This is how you used to have to save patches. Pencil and paper. Title link takes you to a bigger shot.

Univox MR-12x - New Flickr Shot

Update: Link to a virtual MR-12 via keyboardmuseum.com. Fun stuff. : ) Also make sure to track back for more virtual machines.

The Octave Catstick

This picture came up in my random picture viewer. It's an Octave Catstick, a modulation controller with joystick, two LFOs, and four VCAs. Title link takes you to a Sound on Sound article on the Octave Cat which briefly mentiones the Catstic.

Pugix - New Modular Synth Site

Via AH. Title link takes you there. Enjoy.

"This is my MOTM-style synth, in the works since August of 2002. I started this monster after happening across the Synthesis Technology site of Paul Schreiber. Way back in the 1970's I became interested in modular synths. I had met a composer who was using a big studio Moog at SUNY Binghamton. He took me along and let me play with it. The concept of voltage control hit home and I've been fascinated ever since"

ISP Problems Again

So, my ISP, ACE-HOST.NET aka ACENET INC claims to be "Hacker Safe" and guarantees 99.99% uptime. Well, my site has gone down three times. My blog was suspended with no support other than I was eating up CPU time on the shared server it was on. I ended up moving my blog over here, to blogspot.com which has given me 100% uptime. Go Blogger!

I left all my old shots on my old blog to save space and because it would be really painful to move them over. Well, I ftp into my ISP and my freaking blog directory is EMPTY. All my old shots are gone! My old posts have red x's now instead of pictures. I contact support and they say my blog looks fine. My guess is they're looking here. I hope they see this. They also say I should keep my software up to date because of malicious scripts. Umm... I thought they were hacker safe.

So... If you see red x's on any old posts. My apologies. I'm off to upload my backup. These guys absolutely suck. Let's see what happens next. Every time they mess up one of my sites, I will be sure let you know.
