Mint ARP 2500 Synthesizer for Sale and Videos

via Steve: "This is a once in a lifetime chance to own an Arp 2500 without breaking the bank to do it. The eBay listing tells the whole story- this Arp 2500 was purchased during ARP's bankruptcy auction, on site at ARP, by my friend Larry O. The modules were, and remained, in plastic wrap with tags right off the QA line. He recently assembled them into a 'mini' Arp 2500 system built into a cabinet from the QA dept of ARP.

It was fully serviced by Phil at CMS just now and is on eBay.

You will probably never, ever, see such a pristine and AFFORDABLE Arp 2500 for sale... Get it before its gone!"

via this auction:
"The Who’s Pete Townshend and Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page were only two of the devotees of this legendary instrument. Hell, it was the ARP 2500 that was used to call to the aliens in “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”!

The History
This extremely rare and primo system is the last of more than 100 modules and eight cabinets I personally purchased from the auction at the ARP factory when the company went out of business back in 1981. These modules were still wrapped in plastic with QA tags attached when I got them. (See recent photo of QA tags below.) They have seen very little use over the last 30 years (the QA tags are stamped with 1975 dates).

The cabinet resided in ARP’s Engineering Department, where it was used for prototyping new modules. The original serial number tag identifies it as being the 45th cabinet made in 1970 (70-045). Five of the modules and the cabinet sport ARP’s earliest logo (the “squishy lines”), while the rest have the “treble clef” logo.

Vintage? Oh yeah.
Needless to say, I cherry-picked a beautiful configuration to keep as my final remnant: four VCOs, two VCFs, two VCAs, four envelope generators, sample/hold, noise generators.

For the full auction story and a listening tour of this instrument, copy and paste these links to see my YouTube videos [below]

The Modules
This is one sweeeeet system, the likes of which you are not likely to see again. It’s the real deal:
1004-T Oscillator (mixable waveform)
1023 Dual Oscillator
1045 Voltage-Controlled Voice (this thing is The S**t)
1036 Dual Sample & Hold/Random Voltage
1003 Dual EG
1006 Filtamp
1016 Dual Noise

Click “Buy It Now” and get an additional 1006 Filtamp, also just back from service by CMS!

The Icing on the Cake
Included are an original, print Owner’s Manual, a CD containing PDFs of all the circuits and parts (though you really should have Phil do any work on it), and a cabinet extension cable.

On request I can provide an Excel doc containing The Gory Details: serial numbers, CMS service specifics, patching details for the outer slots."

Sold For: US $12,000.00

The First Ever all ARP 2500 Album Opens for Preorder Today on BandCamp

via the Alan R Pearlman Foundation

It's BandCamp Friday, and we have a treat for you!

The first ever all ARP 2500 album opens for preorder today on BandCamp!

Check out the album Now!

The ARP 2500 by David Baron
Distrubuted by Here & Now Recordings

About the Album:

Although it went largely unnoticed at the time, the 2500 became one of the most famous synthesizers in history when it was featured prominently in the film Close Encounters Of The Third Kind, where it was used to communicate with an alien spaceship.

ARP instruments founder Alan Robert Pearlman was a Nasa scientist. Between 1970 and 1981 only 100 ARP 2500's were ever made, each a custom order, no standard configurations. ARP 2500 one of Jean-Michel Jarre's favourite instruments. All the sounds are completely unique. You pretty much need a degree in physics to operate one!

Pete Townsend "Mine plays six notes at once, can have 20 sets of preset control voltages available, six audio signals mixed and instantly usable at various levels. The most incredibly subtle tone colours can be produced using the multimode resonator in conjunction with a normal filter, and the sequencer will provide exhilarating cascades of arpeggios."

David Baron "The Arp 2500 was the only sound source. I sequenced one or two patches at a time and then built the compositions in layers. A lot of the audio FX were created through the use of pedals. The reverberation came from the Bricasti, EMT 240 Plate, Roland Space Echo 501, and a Vermona Spring Reverb. The Arp 2500 always ran through the Avedis Key Pre. I used very little dynamic compression/limiting. Time delay effects were mostly created ‘in the box’ but also with rack mount outboard including the AMS Tape Phase Simulator, an Eventide Instant Flanger, and a MXR Flanger/Doubler. The instrument stays in tune (for the most part). The filters can distort so some care has to be used when gain staging. The envelopes are very snappy. The sound is beautiful and creamy yet percussive and forward."

About David Baron

"This year marks the 50th anniversary of the creation of the ARP 2500

Introduced in 1970, the 2500 was Alan R Pearlman’s first commercial product, being sold under his company’s name Tonus Inc. Alan had come from an engineering background, having worked as a designer for a company providing equipment for NASA, which was used on the Gemini and Apollo space programmes. Indeed, some of the circuitry and hardware that was sent into space was actually used in the 2500 synthesiser, giving an indication of the quality and precision of the instrument he was responsible for creating

The team that developed the 2500 must have put much time and thought into the development of the system before it was finally put into production. Contemporaneous equipment consisted only of modular systems, and therefore the concept of the pre-wired keyboard synthesiser had not yet been formed, and the only instruments (other than electric organs) that were available were fully or semi-modular in nature

With the 2500 the decision was made to do away with the patch-cord method of interconnecting the various signals and control voltages, replacing them with a series of matrix-switches to make the connections. There are several advantages with this design philosophy, but there are also a few disadvantages which I will describe later. The biggest advantage I can see is that it makes patching the system very neat and tidy, there being no cables to work around when building sounds. On a conventionally patched system, the amount of cables can build up very quickly to become a mass of tangled wires, which can obscure the control surface and legending on the synthesiser, making it hard to see what is going on. On the 2500 the controls are always kept clear

ARP 2003 Synthesizer and 3003 Keyboard Controller

Title link takes you to shots via this auction.

Actually, yes this is an ARP 2500. The 2003 is the synthesizer and the 3003 is the keyboard controller.

Details:
"This is a very rare and early version of the ARP 2500 Modular Synthesizer. It has a larger cabinet with 3 x 5 Modules (instead of 2 x 6 Modules on standard ARP 2500s) and the switch matrix in the top section has 10 positions (instead of the 20 positions on later ARP 2500s). You will probably not miss the extra 10 switch positions as most patching is done on the lower matrix.

The ARP 2500 for sale here has the serial number 014 (model 2003, serial 70 - 014).

I have been told that these very early 2500s were hand-built by the ARP/Tonus crew to the most exacting standards, they are probably better than later models (which of course are excellent as well).

The synthesizer is in technically beautiful condition with all modules working 100%. It has a very powerful and clean sound and is set up for 3 voice multitimbral operation.

I haven't been able to locate the cables for connecting the keyboard to the main cabinet, so I can't guarantee full functionality for the keyboard. Last time I used it (about 10 years ago) it worked fine though.

The ARP 2500 can produce a huge range of sounds from fat to bold to shimmering to weird modulation extravaganzas. It also makes a great companion to a sampler with the capability to filter and modify up to 3 external sound sources. Samples with FM-modulated filters? Very crunchy!
There will be no sound degradation when inserting any external sound sources, the signal path is very quiet and clean sounding.

It has 4 oscillators (2 of them with invertible waveforms), 3 excellent 24dB Filters with resonance and built-in mixers for up to 4 audio and 2 CV signals (5 CV inputs per Filter total), 3 VCAs with built-in mixer for 2 CV signals (plus another 3 fixed voltage CV inputs), 6 Envelope Generators (4 of them with Gate Delays and normal & inverted outputs. All 6 Envelope Generators have a switch for single or multiple triggering), a fixed voltage source (i.e. to shift all Oscillators at once) and a pink/white noise source with built-in filters.

There is also the rather lovely model 1027 analog sequencer with 3x10 steps and individual trigger outs for each step. Voltage controllable pulse width. The internal clock is very fast and can be driven into the audio range. You can modulate it from any source and use it as a signal generator/VCO with a user definable waveshape (by setting the 10 steps of the sequencer to different voltages).

All oscillators/filters/etc. are very stable and easy to tune, very much unlike the modular systems built by Robert Moog (even Wendy Carlos found the ARP oscillators to be far superior to the Moog ones).

I have occasionally heard the complaint that the ARP 2500 doesn't have any "special" or more "esoteric" modules as seen on other modulars. The truth is that EVERY module on the ARP 2500 is special, only that this is not so obvious. The oscillators for example first of all sound excellent, they must rank among the best oscillators ever built. They have a very rich and nuanced sound, full of harmonics. They have an extremely wide audio range, from the lowest frequencies (they can also be used as VC-LFOs) to sounds well beyond the human hearing range. They don't start to "jitter" at any frequency like many other oscillators, even ones on quite expensive modular synthesizers. When cross-modulating or using them for FM, they remain stable and powerful sounding.

Another example for the ARP sound philosophy is the 1027 sequencer. This can function as a standard analog sequencer, but also works as an audio generator by driving it up into the audio range - this can be voltage-controlled, of course.

The closest comparison to an ARP 2500 is probably the Serge 79 modular system, which was built with a similar idea of technological excellence at the service of a great sounding musical instrument.

The power supply has been profesionally modified to work with 220-240 Volts, but can be reverted to 110-120 V operation.

Modules are:

1 - Module 1004-T Oscillator
2 - Module 1004-T Oscillator
3 - Module 1023 Dual Oscillator
4 - Module 1006 FiltAmp (24dB Filter & VCA)
5 - Module 1006 FiltAmp (24dB Filter & VCA)
6 - Module 1006 FiltAmp (24dB Filter & VCA)
7 - Module 1033 Dual Envelope Generator (each with Gate Delay and inverted Outputs)
8 - Module 1046 Quad Envelope (4x Envelope, 2x with Gate Delay, 2x inverted Outputs)
9 - Module 1027 Clocked Sequential Control Module (Double width Module)
10 - Self-built Output Module w/headphone amp
11 - Self-built Pink/White Noise Generator w/Filters & fixed voltage (very useful!)
12 - Module 1002 Power Control Module

Main Cabinet for a maximum of 19 modules, 15 modules with access to modulation matrix.
Keyboard w/ 5 octaves, lower octave with inverse colored keys.

The cabinet is in good condition but has some surface marks and scratches, as can be expected on an instrument close to 40 years old. On the top of the cabinet was a small spot were the surface was damaged, but this has been fixed with antique furniture wax (the wax is fully removable). There was some other small damage to some of the corners and edges of the cabinet, but this has been also fixed in the same way and looks o.k. The previous owner had scratched his initials "RMS" in small letters into one of the Keyboard Modules and into the Power Module of the main cabinet. This is not too visible and has never bothered me.

The keyboard cabinet is in similar condition to the main cabinet, there is some surface damage to the lower left hand corner. Please have a look at the photos below. It shouldn't be too much of an effort for a good carpenter to return the cabinet to its original condition.

This instrument was used in the last 15 years in a non-smoking studio environment and has performed beautifully and flawlessly during this time. I'm sure the next owner will enjoy it for a long time to come."

Arp Fields - ARP 2500 live in concert

Pablo Garreton

"Arp Fields, for ARP 2500 synthesizer.

The composition was performed live with an 8.1 surround system at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz, Cologne with the support of the Studio for Electronic Music.

All the sounds are generated live with the ARP 2500, the Doepfer modular is used as a mixer and for some LFOs. There is also an Expert Sleepers audio interface to send CV triggers to sync the spatialisation and some LFOs. All the pitches are manually adjusted with the controls of the ARP synthesizer. This modular system has a total of 12 oscillators. The synthesizer has not ever been restored, hence some parts where not working 100%.

All the sounds were spatialized with algorithms and LFOs in live with a custom Max/msp for the 8.1 surround system, controlled with a midi controller.

I’m am using ableton and M4L for synchro, custom LFOs and some mixing. After a while I decided I should do a piece only with the Arp 2500 sounds, as you can can see in my feed, I have a video of a live concert with this. Improvising in the studio is relatively easy compared to play in a live concert with this incredible machine, that has never been properly restored. The sound and the energy is still there anyway.

An ARP 2500 in Eurorack Format?

CMS 1004 demo - The Pearlman Oscillator and T-mixer Published on Sep 24, 2018 Phil Cirocco

"This is a quick preliminary demo of the new CMS 1004 Pearlman Oscillator. This VCO is a faithful reproduction of the massive VCO circuit from the ARP 2500, shrunk down to euro rack format. An analog CRT oscilloscope shows some of the unique and interesting waveform combinations available. discretesynthesizers.com"

CMS is going eurorack with the CMS 1004T (ARP 2500) - Pearlman Oscillator and T-mixer

This is huge news. Not only the ARP 2500 1004T oscillator in eurorack format, but CMS entering the eurorack market as well. Phil Cirocco of CMS is known as the ARP specialist in the US. He works on vintage ARPs as well as designing his own synths, most recently the CMS 2607. Be sure to see the CMS label at the bottom of this post for more.

Pearlman, of course refers to ARP's founder Alan R. Pearlman.

Curious if CMS plans a full blown ARP 2500 in eurorack format. Imagine that. :)

RIP Alan R. Pearlman

It has come to my attention that ARP founder Alan R. Pearlman has passed way. He was 90 years old at the time of the NAMM TEC Awards in 2015. The ARP 2600 SYNTHESIZER received the award that year. You can find a video from the event featuring Pat Gleeson and Jim Heintz of WayOutWare, who worked with Alan on their ARP emulations, below. Alan was no longer traveling at the time and was not at the event.

You can find a great video interview with Alan R. Pearlman from 2006 at the NAMM website here. The following is an interesting excerpt from the site: "Alan R. Pearlman was nicknamed 'ARP' as a kid growing up in New York City, so it seemed the perfect name for a company when he was later designing electronic musical instruments. The first instrument created by Alan was the modular synthesizer known as the ARP 2500. The monophonic product was released years after the first Moog and Buchla instruments, but gained attention for several new features including the ever-popular function of not drifting out of tune, which was a common problem in the earlier products. Next came the now classic ARP 2600, and soon the company became a great leader in the growth and development of the electronic musical market."

And via Wikipedia:

"Pearlman was born in New York City in 1925. His father was a movie theatre projector designer and his grandfather made parts for phonograph machines. He grew up building radio sets, inspired by Popular Science and Popular Mechanics magazines, and served in the military briefly following World War II.

Following his military service, Pearlman attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Massachusetts and in 1948, for his senior thesis designed a vacuum tube envelope follower that could extract the envelope of a sound from an instrument. He later audited a Harvard University course taught by one of the inventors of the transistor, Walter Brattain.[1]

Pearlman spent five years designing amplifiers for NASA's Gemini and Apollo programs. He worked at George A. Philbrick Researchers with Roger Noble, and the two later founded analog module and op amp manufacturer Nexus Research Laboratory in Canton, Massachusetts in the early 1960s. Nexus Research Laboratory's business grew to $4 million in annual sales before being acquired by Teledyne in 1966.[2][3]

In 1969, Pearlman founded ARP Instruments, Inc. (originally Tonus, Inc.) with $100,000 of his own money and matching funds from a small group of investors. The name ARP was derived from Pearlman's initials. ARP entered the fledgling synthesizer industry with the introduction of the ARP 2002, which with twice as many switch rows on top, became the 2500 analog modular synthesizer. The 2002 was introduced at the AES show in Fall 1970, and subsequently competed head to head with other leading synthesizer companies of the time. Pearlman eschewed patch cord methodology for interconnecting synthesizer modules, designing instead a system of sliding matrix switches. He also applied his op-amp experience by utilizing dual transistors on a single integrated circuit to overcome temperature gradients and provide very stable oscillators - more stable than other popular synthesizers on the market at the time, namely offerings from Moog Music and Buchla.[4][5]"

"ARP 2600 SYNTHESIZER receives NAMM TECH Award at 2015 show. Speakers Dr. Pat Gleeson and Jim Heintz of WayOutWare recall stories of the ARP 2600 instrument. Quotes from Pete Townsend, Alan R. Pearlman (ARP name taken from inventors nickname as a youth) Video by B K Hotchkiss"

Note it is extremely difficult to pick videos for a RIP post especially considering how many great videos there are out there and how many have been already featured on the site as you can see via the ARP label. I'll be searching for some not previously featured to put up in individual posts throughout the day. If you have any you'd like to share please do so in the comments. I wanted to share the following as it features Alan R. Pearlman's first iconic synth, the ARP 2500.

ARP 2500 Relisted

New lower BIN
"This is a once in a lifetime chance to own an Arp 2500 without breaking the bank to do it. The eBay listing tells the whole story- this Arp 2500 was purchased during ARP's bankruptcy auction, on site at ARP, by my friend Larry O.

ALAN R. PEARLMAN FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES GIVING TUESDAY INDIEGOGO CAMPAIGN KICKOFF

Press release follows.

The Foundation Announces the First Publicly-Accessible ARP 2500 in the USA

STONE RIDGE, NY, November 28, 2023: Thanks to a generous donation by former ARP employee Bruce McLendon, the Alan R. Pearlman Foundation is welcoming a 2508 Wing Cabinet into its collection of legendary ARP synthesizers.

This 2508 cabinet was assembled as a complete self-contained 2500 synthesizer featuring original oscillator, filter, sequencer, envelope and mix-sequencer modules, all linked by the flexible 2500 patch matrix system. It also contains a new oscillator module designed and built for the Foundation by Phil Cirocco of CMS (Discrete Music Systems).

The ARP Foundation is launching an IndieGogo campaign to raise funds to complete the restoration of what will become the only publicly-accessible ARP 2500 synthesizer in the USA, and to bolster its ARPs For All Program in preparation for the 2500’s arrival.

About the Alan R. Pearlman Foundation:

The ARP Archives & The Alan R. Pearlman Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Its mission is to celebrate the legacy of inventor, musician, entrepreneur and engineer Alan R. Pearlman, by making his innovative inventions publicly accessible, and by inspiring future generations to imagine and create. Alan R. Pearlman was a pioneer in the electronic music world, and the founder of ARP Synthesizers, a leading synthesizer manufacturer in the 1970s. The Foundation is dedicated to preserving his legacy, and is committed to creating opportunities for emerging artists, sound designers and electronic music entrepreneurs.

Among their missions is enabling artists and designers to use rare, vintage ARP synthesizers, as well as recording and production equipment - which they’ve successfully accomplished with the ARPs For All Program in cooperation with their partners at The Record Co. in Boston, MA

Side note for synth history's sake: The New England Synthesizer Museum supposedly had the first ARP 2500 on display, but it was non functional when I visited, and the museum no longer around. The owner/curator David Hillel Wilson passed away back in 2010.

ARP 2500 Modular Analog Synthesizer for Sale

via weisma where you'll also find a 2600 and 1611 sequencer.

"In the 1960s I was one of the pioneers of contemporary electronic music in the Netherlands. In the 1970’s, when the portable ARP 2600 synthesizer was created by ARP Instruments, Inc., I decided to start my private electronic music studio “Five Roses”, using the ARP 2600 for studio compositions as well as live electro-acoustic performances. At a later stage, when the modular ARP 2500 synthesizer was introduced, I expanded the capabilities my studio step by step.

The ARP synthesizers have been the center of my work for many years, but as electronic music became mainstream, my focus shifted to acoustic contemporary music. It is therefore that I have decided to put up my now classical ARP 2500 and 2600 synthesizers for sale for the collector, or for the musician that wishes to explore the unique sound of these landmark analog synthesizers."
