Access Matrix 1000 Programmer

You don't see these too often. Before the Virus A, Access used to make hardware knob boxes for the Oberheim Matrix 1000 and the Waldorf Microwave. Guess which one this is? : ) Title link takes you to more shots pulled via this auction.
If anyone gets this thing, post back in the comments with how it works as a real time controller.

via brian comnes.

Update via Till "Qwave" Kopper in the comments:
"The Matrix Controller did also work for the Matrix 6 and the Matrix 6 rack version. I used to own a Matrix 6 and this controller. It was working as fine as editing is possible on non rotary encoders. So be prepared for some parameter jumps when moving a knob.
I remember the filter cutoff knob was transmitted somehow by SysEx. And it took a while for the synth to act to it. So it was impossible to use the controller for real time filter sweeps.
I can't remember what you had to do to tell the Programmer if you are working on a Matrix 6 (keyb. or rack version) or a Matrix 1000. There was a certain bottom combination needed.
You could lock the knobs in order not to change (=jump) a sound into nirvana while playing. This lock modus was also the default when turing the unit on.
I own now the MicroWave version for my MicroWave plus WaveSlave. Works fine !
But it is not better then good new controller boxes. But it does look way better then those plastic ones of today."

"The modulation matrix is not handled at all.

Back in time the company was named Access Midi Tools, they even showed a prototype at Frankfurt of the PG-X in 1996, a universal hardware programmer, at the TSI/Waldorf booth. This never made it into production, to much units to support, look what happened to Polyframe/SoundDiver.

Have a look here for more info (German only).

There is a Review at SOS about both Programmers:

I have them both, just for the cool look ;-) There are some little issues with the Matrix one (not just on mine, it is a generic issue) on the sustain of the filter envelope, I allways planned to check if the programmer is sending stupid data or if the M1000 is causing the fault.

As Till pointed out, there is some steppyness with the Matrix, but this is just the slow reception in the synth.

It is quite fine with the MicroWave, which is able to eat lots of SysEx without any problem.

Georg."

Update via cornutt in the comments:
"I am the author of M1000X, the Matrix 6/6R/1000 patch editor for OSX. So I'm pretty familiar with the MIDI implementations of these boxes. Here's what I have found out about them:

The Matrix-6/6R MIDI implementation was only about half finished, and it has a critical bug. The two biggest problems with it are:

1. Some of the parameters allow both positive and negative numbers, but the M6 won't accept a negative value in a MIDI single parameter message. So, if any paraemter needs to be set to a negative value, the entire patch has to be sent to the box. And the M6 doesn't allow the patch-load message to write to the edit buffer; it has to be written directly to the patch memory. Not only is this slow, but it also means that the edit can't be undone (unless the external editor remembers it).

2. The M6 has no MIDI mesages for updating the routing matrix. As in the case above, the only way to do it is to write the entire patch to patch memory.

They fixed a lot of the MIDI problems on the Matrix-1000. It supports all legal values in MIDI single parameter messages. There is no reason why an M1000 can't do a real-time filter sweep if the external editor handles it properly. The only thing that was botched on the M1000 is that it does not remember patch names. That was probably done because the M1000 itself can't display them, but IHMO it still should have stored them in order to support external editors, and also patch interchange with the M6.

The other thing that strikes me abou the Access box is that it doesn't appear to have nearly enough controls to edit all of the parameters that a Matrix-6 or 1000 patch supports, even leaving out the routing matrix. Where, for example, are the knobs for adjusting the tracking generator break points, or the buttons for setting the zillions of possible envelope modes? Anyway, thanks for publishing this; it was an interesting look back into history. And I hope my comments were helpful."

Waldorf Microwave 1 w Access Programmer, Sound Set & Memory Cards

Microwave SN 9232358
Access Programmer SN B19600412

"The Microwave itself has been recently serviced and re-capped by Abell Audio and given a clean bill of health. The Microwave has also been updated to the final version 2.0 software update. This is the Rev A version of the Microwave, which has the anodized finish and the Analog Curtis CEM 3389 voltage controlled filter and voltage controlled amplifiers. The anodized finish is much more durable than the painted Nextel finish of the Rev B. The differences between the CEM 3389 (rev A) and CEM 3387 (rev B) are subtle enough to likely be overlooked in the mix, but I have found the Rev A to have the ability to be slightly more snappy, and the Rev A has been reported to be more crisp and more open.

The Microwave comes with the original bound Performance Manual, bound Programming Manual, bound Addendum to Firmware revision 1.20 (now obsolete due to the 2.0 upgrade, but included for the completest), and the bound Microwave Software-Update Ver. 2.0 manual.

Included is the Access Microwave Programmer that brings the Microwave 1 more toward the knob per function school. A bound manual for the Microwave Programmer is included.

Also included are four professional soundset cards. Two are from Waldorf and are programmed by Dave Gould and Rob Papen. The remaining two are the two Metro Sound releases.

The remaining two cards are custom built memory cards, each of which holds 6 banks worth of programs. The standard memory cards for the Microwave 1 hold only 2 banks. These two cards hold the equivalent to 6 standard memory cards. The original documentation for the cards is included..."

Waldorf MicroWave 1 + Access Programmer + rare modification (4x audio-inputs)

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This is an incredibly RARE synthesizer because it has been modified to be able to receive 4 audio inputs and pass each of them through the wavetable oscillator and through the Curtis filter too, then out individually or as a summed stereo signal. The modification was officially endorsed by Waldorf, but there were very few units done. You can see the 4 inputs directly above the 4 individual outputs on the back of the rack unit. This modification alone should significantly increase the value of this unit above the average selling price of £1650 for other MicroWave 1s sold on Reverb. I am also including the Access MicroWave Controller, which is an external MIDI-controller which provides knob-per function control of the rack unit (which is otherwise difficult to adjust). The Access controller usually sells individually on Reverb for £400-£500, but I am including it together with the synthesizer because they make a perfect match. This Waldorf MicroWave Rev. 1 rack unit has all the wavetables from the PPG Wave synthesizer and more, and also a genuine Curtis analog filter, and also the 2.0 firmware update installed to improve the sound."

Access Microwave Hardware Programmer SN B19500196

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Access made these hardware programmers in the mid 90's to program the Waldorf Microwave Mk 1.

The synth is not included, this is only for the programmer and it can only be used to program the Microwave mk 1 (A or B) where you connect your midi into the programmer then the programmer goes into the Microwave.

The condition of the unit is fantastic, not a mark on it and it all functions correctly.

Complete with power supply."

Synth Programmer for Waldorf Pulse

Published on Sep 25, 2019 Stereoping

"Demo for some of the Pulse Programmer's features like OCTAVE buttons, DRIVE pot, E-PATCHES, easier access to Modulation Matrix and Arpeggiator. Finally the video contains a cacophonic desaster by using the Programmer 's PARAPHONICmode. It allows playing intervals and triads on the Pulse by analyzing the midinotes and muting/transposing DCO 2&3 accordingly.

Still missing is a demo for the Pulse Programmer's capabilities of combining several Pulses to a polysynth - the CASCADE. I'll do a separate video for this asap."

"KORG VOLCA Series on a late night SPACE DUB LIVE SESSION with some ambient guitar live loops &other Synths: Roland Juno 60, Jomox Xbase 09, Doepfer MS-404, Waldorf Microwave I.
I have carefully described in the video (filmed with 3 cams), which Synths are playing and muted at the moment. So you don't have to guess the different sounds.

At the end of the session I used Waldorf Puls I and Nord Modular, too. Yamaha RM1x is just used as a simple Sequencer (no use of internal sounds). Recorded without overdubs and mastering in just one take.

KORG VOLCA SET UP:
Volca Keys signal left channel into MFB-Filterbox and right channel straight into the Submixer, with heavy use of Delay
Volca Bass straight into the sub mixer
Volca Beats straight into the sub mixer
