Moog Sonic 6 - with Ring Mod & Bode Freq Shift - #1

Published on Nov 3, 2017 noddyspuncture

"What I've done here is put the Sonic 6 through both the Moogerfooger Ring Modulator and the Bode Frequency Shifter - and then panned them hard left and right. Headphones most definitely recommended..!! The LFO output from the Ring Modulator is also patched into the Bode's control input. The Sonic is basically playing itself via the X/Y trigger assigners and I'm varying both the effects and the Sonic's oscillator and modulation parameters... and all that is still just "scratching the surface"..! :)"

Bode 735 Frequency Shifter & Electronic Specifications

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"For auction is an extremely rare Bode 735 Frequency Shifter. This is a device designed by Harold Bode in the 60’s which was produced until the early 80s by his company Bode Sound Co.
This instrument is most well known for being repackaged and included as the Moog 1630 Frequency Shifter of the 1970s Moog Modular systems.

The Bode up for sale has been dated to 1972 and appears to use the same PCBs as the Moog 1630. These were hand assembled by Bode and are extremely uncommon outside university electronics studios.
I acquired this one in 2002 and was told at the time it once belonged to Vladimir Ussachevsky who started the Columbia Princeton Electronic Music Studio in the 1960’s.

CONDITION:

I have been collecting and repairing vintage electronics since the 1990’s, I have over 18 years experience as a restoration technician of high end and rare instruments and this is from my personal collection.
There has been no work performed on this historic device besides replacing the frayed power cable for safety reasons, the old cable will be included in the sale if the winner wants it. I found the identical vintage
style cable at an electronics supplier to keep this as authentic as possible.

There are no unexpected surprises here."

Harold Bode's Birthday & the Bode Ring Modulator Schematics

via The Bob Moog Foundation

"It’s the birthday of Harald Bode (1909-1987), German-born pioneer in synthesizer design and inventor of the Warbo Formant Organ (one of the earliest polyphonic synths), the Melochord, and the Bode Frequency Shifter, among many other instruments and devices.

Bode and Bob Moog began to work together in 1966, and this ring modulator is an indication of their partnership. Bode’s Ring Modulator and Frequency Shifter designs were implemented in R.A. Moog Co. products, and his vocoder was the basis for the Moog Vocoder released in the 1970s.

The schematic below was hand-drawn by Bob Moog himself. (Note the the “B.S.” in the “drawn by” square. In order to keep from having his initials in all the boxes when he drew up a certain schematic, Bob would use joke initials B.S.) Image: Bob Moog Foundation schematic for the Bode Ring Modulator. Many more Bob Moog Foundation archival schematics here: http://moogfoundation.org/schematics/"

"Warbo Formant Organ (1937), an archetype of today's polyphonic synthesizer, was a four voice key-assignment keyboard with two formant filters and dynamic envelope controller. Eventually it went into commercial production by a factory in Dachau, and it became one of the earliest polyphonic synthesizer products, along with Novachord (1939) by Hammond.

Melochord (1947–1949) developed by Bode was extensively used by Werner Meyer-Eppler in early days of the electronic studio at Bonn University. Then in 1953 a Melochord, along with Monochord by Freidrich Trautwein, was specially commissioned by the Studio for Electronic Music of the Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR Studio in Cologne, West German Broadcasting Corporation), and used by the Elektronische Musik group throughout the 1950s. (See #Melochord at the WDR Studio in Cologne for details)

From 1950, Bode designed electronic organs for the Apparatewerk Bayern (AWB) in Germany and the Estey Organ Company in the United States. In 1954, Bode immigrated to the United States as a chief engineer (later vice-president) of Estey Organ, and resumed his research at several companies and as a contractor of German companies.

In 1959-1960, Bode developed modular synthesizer and sound processor, and in 1961, he wrote a paper exploring the advantages of newly emerging transistor technology over older vacuum tube devices; also he served as AES session chairman on music and electronic for the fall conventions in 1962 and 1964; after then, his ideas were adopted by Robert Moog, Donald Buchla and others.

After retiring from the chief engineer of Bell Aerospace in 1974, he composed TV-advertising spots and gave live concerts. Also in 1977, Harald was invited as a chief engineer of the Norlin/Moog Music after Robert Moog left.

He died in New York, New York, United States in 1987."

Spark2 Tutorials

And the press release:

"Arturia announces availability of outstanding SPARK 2 drum machine software

“I love the quick and easy ways to get results using SPARK 2. The ability to build up your own kit mixed with your own samples is very cool. My favourites to go for in SPARK 2 are the vintage drum machines. They have an analogue sound and no one hit is exactly the same, so you don’t get the ugly ‘machine gun’ effect — really useful!”

- Trentemøller, 2014 (electronic music producer and multi-instrumentalist)

GRENOBLE, FRANCE: having made its beat-making mark when premiered to critical acclaim at the 2014 NAMM Show in Anaheim, California, music and hardware company Arturia is proud to announce availability of SPARK 2 — bringing a new look, new feel, and new features to its premier sound- sculpting and performance drum machine software for Mac and Windows — as of April 30...

With the timely introduction of SPARK 2, Arturia has given its beat creation software a new look, new feel, and a whole host of new features fit to make it the premier sound-sculpting and performance drum machine on the market — all the more so when perfectly paired up with the award-winning SPARK Creative Drum Machine and SparkLE Creative Drum Machine controllers. It’s a match made in hybrid heaven that’s more flexible than ever before!

While SPARK has always been built on a fully-modular VA (Virtual Analogue) sound engine, originally only developers had access to this wonderful-sounding rhythmical power source. Not now. With the all-new MODULAR screen, SPARK 2 users are now free to add and subtract modules (including Oscillator, multimode Filter and Karplus-Strong Filter, Envelope, Lfo, MiniMixer, RingMod, and Bode Frequency Shifter); create their own patch routings; and assign up to six macro controls for immediate control. Clearly, it’s this truly modular, fully-accessible sound engine that makes SPARK 2 truly shine as the ultimate drum synthesizer!

With SPARK 2, Arturia has taken the opportunity to update the look and feel of SPARK to allow for faster workflow, while creating a layout that allows it to grow well into the future and secure its longevity — no easy feat in today’s here today, gone tomorrow’s world of rapidly disposable developments. New tabbed pages provide a cleaner look, more screen space, and faster access to the most needed features — features like an all-new MIXER window (with level, pan, and insert effects and sends — to 14 unique professional-grade effects, no less), expanded PATTERN edit screen, and enhanced LIBRARY page for better data management.

SPARK 2 also adds 50 new kits — including no fewer than 800 new instruments — that span many more musical genres than ever before, including trap, hip-hop, tech house, and nu disco, to name but a few modern electronic music styles, as well as acoustic drum kits capably spanning modern rock, funk, R ’n’ B, pop, vintage rock, and latin percussion. Vintage drum machine enthusiasts are also well catered for with ear-opening emulations of the likes of Roland’s TR-808, TR-909, TR-707, TR-606, and CR-78; LinnDrum, Linn 9000; Oberheim DMX; E-mu Drumulator; Sequential Circuits Drumtraks; Yamaha RX5; and Simmons SDS-V — analogue and digital classics all. And all kits come complete with 32 patterns that can be used by themselves or form the basis of user-programmed beats.

Bringing up the rear, SPARK 2 sees SONG mode updated, too. Song segments can now be configured and then replayed at the touch of a button. Users can create song sections that will play from one pattern to another and then recall these sections via the step buttons on the SPARK Creative Drum Machine and SparkLE Creative Drum Machine controllers — perfect performance enhancements!

Indeed, integration with the outside world works on multiple levels: as a 32- and 64-bit compatible virtual instrument for Mac and Windows, SPARK 2 can be run standalone or used as a plug-in with popular host DAWs (supporting 16 audio outputs that can be routed and assigned within the host); AIFF, WAV, REX2, and MIDI files can all be imported with drag and drop export of WAV format patterns and MIDI sequence formats into DAWs; and all parameters on SPARK 2’s MAIN screen are MIDI-assignable for control via any external MIDI device.

So why not get behind the wheel of a truly creative drum machine and let SPARK 2 help you create truly driving rhythms with minimum fuss and maximum musical output. No driving lessons required!

SPARK 2 can be exclusively purchased online from Arturia for an introductory promotional price of €129.00 EUR/$129.00 USD between May 1 and June 30, inclusive (rising to €169.00 EUR/$189.00 USD thereafter); alternatively, Arturia is also offering a promotional pricing of €199.00 EUR/$199.00 USD on the SparkLE Creative Drum Machine controller (with SPARK 2 included) between those same dates (rising to €249.00 EUR/$299.00 USD thereafter) from any authorised dealer or online from here: http://www.arturia.com/evolution/en/buy/spark2introductorypromotion"

Surrey Spectrum Frequency Shifter

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

This is the first Surrey post. Via the listing:

"This is something special and quite unique.. The Spectrum Shifter by Surrey Electronics. Rare audio processing device from the 70-ties, not the same principle as a pitch shifter. A bit like a budget Bode shifter. The slider might need some cleaning but everything works and it is ready to play or mod into...

Please have a look at the pictures and see for yourself. Let me know if you have any questions. Please check my 100% positive, music/synth/studio related feedback. I'm a serious and professional seller AND packer.

Something about frequency shifters from the web:

'a frequency shifter will shift all frequencies additively. Thus, the spectra (overtone content) of the source will become increasingly distorted with shifting. This is opposed to say, a Harmonizer's pitch shifting. Frequency Shifters usually use a quadrature oscillator as the carrier (these were usually voltage-controlled in analog synth oriented models), and at low rates, can be used to reduce microphone feedback. The famous devices designed by Harold Bode can shift up to 5k and good carrier rejection, and were used in electronic music studios to radically alter sounds, especially sources with a lot of noise, such as percussion. FS's were featured in several analog synths, such as the Buchla, Serge (two versions, one with external carrier), and the Moog (licensed from Bode).'"

Modcan Dual Freqshifter - Eurorack Synthesizer Module

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"the dual freq shifter is an all digital interpretation of the classic bode design with numerous significant benefits over its analogue predecessor, primarily the dual configuration.

there are probably only a handful of vintage bode fss in the hands of users that are ever within factory specs at any given time due to complicated and costly calibration procedure. with the dual frequency shifter calibration will never be an issue and will remain an accurate and precise instrument regardless of ambient temperature or age.

frequency shifting is primarily a mathematical function and nothing does maths better than a dsp capable microprocessor. no analogue circuit comes close for feed-thru error free multiplication, high image rejection and vco stability.

another important consideration is that it would be both cost and space prohibitive to implement a matched set of dual fs in analogue with similar features and performance especially in 12hp.

the real fun begins when the two independent fs sections are patched in series or as independent stereo processors. this allows for some seriously altered stereo effects with near 3d results.

features:
2 independent frequency shifter channels in one package
cv control of feedback for each channel
cv control of shift for each channel
clip indicators
+/-5khz exponential shift range
+/-5khz linear shift range
thru-zero operation
high quality codec
16bit audio
zero calibration maintenance
20hz-20khz response
modest current consumption
width 12hp

specs:
sample rate: 48khz
sample resolution: 16-bit
output: typical +/-5v @1kohms
input: typical +/-5v @100kohms
input cv: +/-5v @100kohms
power: +12v @70ma, -12v @10ma"

Arturia Introduces New Spark 2 Software Engine

"Arturia all set to reignite drum machine market with new-look SPARK 2

'There are a lot of software drum sequencers on the market, and most of them, I’ve found, just fall short in sound quality. With SPARK, Arturia has been able to capture the warmth and fidelity of original analogue drum machines and reimagine the sounds into a high-quality, intuitive drum sequencer.'

- Chris Keating (Yeasayer)

GRENOBLE, FRANCE: music software and hardware company Arturia is proud to announce SPARK 2 — a new look, new feel version of the powerful software engine that drives its drum machine-redefining SPARK Creative Drum Machine and SparkLE Creative Drum Machine hybrid hardware/software instruments — at the 2014 NAMM Show, January 23-26 in Anaheim, California.

Modular Sounds 5

Published on Mar 17, 2013 pjoris2·10 videos

"Primarily a test of the functionality of the Flame Chord Machine and some modules I picked up yesterday, so no real track. Chords and arpeggiation are generated by the Flame Chord Machine in Quant Mode. Only major and unison chords used -- root tone is controlled by an Analogue Solutions SQ8 sequencer.

Chords are played by the Analogue Systems Sorceror: 3 RS-95 VCOs through a mixer, the RS-110 Multimode Filter, VCA and finaly through the RS-240 Bode Frequency Shifter. Some modulation of pulse width, filter cutoff, and amount of frequency shift (using 2 envelopes and LFOs).

Arpeggiation is played by an E350 Morphing Terrarium and an E340 Cloud Generator. The E340 goes through a STG Sea Devils Filter, the E350 through a VCA and both are treated by the E580 Resampling Mini-Delay in "Tape" mode.

"Drums" are controlled by gate signals of the Oberkorn. "Bassdrum" is a sine from a Doepfer A-110 standard VCO with frequency swept by an envelope. "Hihats" are some noise through a Make Noise QMMG -- two channels one in lowpass, and second in high pass mode and both go through an RS-90 Echo.

All recorded on 7 tracks of the Zoom R16."

Vintage MOOG SIGNAL PROCESSORS

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

See the original advert for the set in this post.

via the seller: "THIS IS A ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY FOR ANYONE TO OWN ALL THESE UNITS WITHOUT HAVING TO WAIT YEARS & YEARS TO FIND THEM ALL... IT TOOK ME MANY YEARS TO FIND THEM ALL AND SPENT LOTS OF MONEY ON THEM PLUS ALL THE ELECTRONIC MAINTENANCE I HAVE GIVEN TO EACH ONE OF THEM TO HAVE THEM WORK ALL 100%.

I have 5 units in a robust ATA Molded PE Shock w/ Rubber Shock Suspension (12U Space) Model: G-Shock-12L almost new with both front and back lid covers with it's own locking key as well... (REFER TO PHOTOS...) And the Moog Parametric Equalizer as a single unit because it didn't fit in the case unfortunately... But you get all 6 units shipped together as a complete set... NOTE: On the last picture the Bode Frequency Shifter, Bode Vocoder, and the second Moog Parametric EQ ARE NOT included in the bundle they are there just because that's where I had mounted both Parametric EQs but you only get one of the Parametric EQs and not 2 that are pictured there along with the other Bode stuff... Although the Bode Units are going for sale as well but are being sold separately so please refer to info description or ask questions if you're not sure. Thanks...

Here's what's included in the bundle:

- Moog 16 Channel Vocoder 327A - Model: MBVO - X 1 Unit
- Moog Custom Engineering String Filter - ( Fully Calibrated...) - X 1 Unit
- Moog Custom Engineering Dual VCO - ( Fully Calibrated As Well...) - X 1 Unit
- Moog 12 Stage Phaser - Model: MPKH - X 1 Unit
- Moog Three Band Parametric Equalizer 304A - Model: MKPE - X 1 Unit
- Moog Ten Band Graphic Equalizer - Model: MKGE - X 1 Unit

Here's some info you may want to know about each unit:

* Moog Dual VCO - The Moog Dual Voltage Controlled Oscillator was built in very limited quantities by the Moog Custom Engineering Department A.K.A. Modusonic which has 2 Ultra-Stable VCOs based on the 3rd Revision of the Minimoog 921A VCO With Temp Comp UA 726 Matched Differential Pair Transistors. SUPER FREAKING PHAT..!!! Personally I think it beats any Minimoog I've own... The waveforms are just "EARGASMIC"... =) You've got to hear it for yourself... The Moog Dual VCO was designed to add that extra two oscillator fatness to other Moog Synthesizers as the Multimoog, Micromoog and the Minimoog at the time; although the Minimoog required the addition of the Keyboard CV Output Modification so it could control the Moog Dual VCO's pitch and route it's output back into the Minimoog's External Audio Input... The Micromoog & Multimoog did not require this mod because they have already a Keyboard CV Output Jack as well as their respective audio input. So basically you can use the Moog Dual VCO with any Analog Synthesizer with a Keyboard CV Output (1 Volt/Oct.) and an External Audio Input to pass the Dual VCO's output signal back in it and voila two extra fat Moog Oscillators in your set up.

* Functions, Features & Input/Output Option:

- Master Tune - Controls overall tuning of both oscillators or one when only used as single...
- Pulse Width - Controls width of both oscillator's pulse waveforms when used either as single or dual.
- Octave Select Multi-Switch Knob with: LO, 32', 16', 8', 4', 2'. (Both Oscillator 1 & 2 have their own Multi-Switch Knob)
- Waveform Select Switch with: Up Ramp/Sawtooth, Triangle, Pulse, Sine.
- Oscillator On/Off Switch - Each Oscillator has it's own on/off switch to quickly add or subtract one oscillator while performing.
- Oscillator 2 Sync Switch - Automatically syncs both oscillators together by the flick of a switch.
- Oscillator 2 Tune Knob - To tune or detune oscillator 2 from 1 either while synced or un-synced.
- Output Level Knob - Controls overall output volume.
- Power Switch - Turns on/off unit.
- Oscillator 1 CV Input Jack 1/4" (1 Volt/Oct.) - Controls oscillator 1 only.
- Both In 1 CV Input Jack 1/4" (1 Volt/Oct.) - Controls pitch of both oscillators while oscillator 1 being the master controller.
- Oscillator 1 Output Jack 1/4" - Outputs signal of oscillator 1 only.
- Oscillator 2 CV Input Jack 1/4" (1 Volt/Oct.) - Controls oscillator 2 only.
- Both In 2 CV Input Jack 1/4" (1 Volt/Oct.) - Controls pitch of both oscillators.
- Oscillator 2 Output Jack 1/4" - Outputs signal of oscillator 2 only.
- X 4 Multiple Output Jacks 1/4" - Note: These are not connected whatsoever to any circuit inside the unit, they only serve to split any input or output signal you wish to multiply.
- Runs on 120 VAC Only.

* Moog 16 Channel Vocoder - The Moog 16 Channel Vocoder was designed by Genius Engineer and Pioneer In Electronic Music Instruments Harald Bode in the mid 70's about and first released in about 1977 under the "Bode Sound Company" Brand which was manufactured by Polyfusion under the name of Bode Vocoder 16 Channel Model 7702, and was then licensed to the Moog Synthesizer Brand in about 1978 which was then released as The Moog 16-Channel Vocoder 327A Model MBVO. Both Vocoders are almost identical in circuit design except for a few slight variations in the type of components that were used in each but functions and features are basically the same...
