'Dark Energy' Mini Synth, AJH Chance Delay, Penrose, Vox Digitalis, Radio Music sample/wav player

video upload by DreamsOfWires

"Melodic Eurorack performance with Doepfer A111-5 Mini Synthesizer Voice, the new AJH Synth Chance Delay probability/gate delay, Sonic Potions Penrose quantizer, Music Thing Modular Radio Music wav/sample player, Doepfer A118-2 Noise Random S&H, Noise Engineering Vox Digitalis sequencer, Happy Nerding FX Aid XL, Cosmotronic Cosmix, Expert Sleepers Disting Mk4 as wav/audio recorder, Happy Nerding Isolator headphone/audio output.

A small 84hp rig in a DIY case with 4MS power. I created the sample loops in Audacity from some choir music. FX Aid algorithm is delay into reverb. LFO2 from the Mini Synth triggers the sample & hold clock, this sends random voltages to the quantiser, which converts them into the chosen notes on it's keyboard.

LFO2 also triggers the Chance Delay, which is using the Length control to convert the incoming LFO pulses (square wave) to very long gates - each gate will be completed before it responds to another incoming pulse, meaning it can be used as a clock divider with continuous control, rather than simple preset divisions.

The Chance function determines the probability of the module outputting a gate signal - here I'm using it as a switch to trigger the Vox Digitalis, so with Chance at zero it won't advance the sequencer, whilst at full/100% it will trigger it on every gate it generates. Since those gates are a division of the incoming pulse rate, this means the sequencer will change samples on the Radio Music at a much slower speed than the notes produced by the Mini Synth, which is runs at the same rate as LFO2 and the sample & hold.

Mini Synthesizer Voice is the Eurorack version of the Dark Energy standalone synth.

Alessandro Cortini + MATTHS Rig Tour

video upload by sonicstate

"Alessandro Cortini played a rare UK gig last weekend, and regular Sonic TALK panelist Matt Hodson AKA MATTHS was booked in the support slot.

We figured it was a great opportunity to have them talk about their gear selection and approach to the performance.

Alessandro opted for something minimal to support his completely improvised approach, with two Make Noise Strega (these were designed in conjunction with Alessandro) and two 0-CTRL - sequencer/CV controllers, Strymon Blue Sky and Volante all into an Allen and Heath Zone 96 DJ mixer, the laptop runs Resolume visuals for the show.

http://cortini.bandcamp.com

Matths has a different approach basing his set around pre writtern material and re-voicing larger modular rig, with the Knobula Poly Cinematic for chords, 1010music Bit Box for triggering CV and gates, the Expert Sleepers ES-9 running from the laptop for triggers from Bitwig, the Soma Pulsar-23, Beatstep

Matt uses an analogue parallel compression path to give the stereo feed to front of house a more consistent polished sound.

3. Synthfest UK 23: Analogue Solutions - Ample Desktop Pin matrix
We returned to the Analogue Solutions booth to chat again with Tom who showed us the second synth he’s released this year, Ample. Ample is a 3 VCO synth which combines some of the greatest bits of other Analogue Solutions synths, including a patch pin matrix similar to the Vostok, a sequencer taken from the generator, an interval generator similar to that on the Fusebox, and a 24dB filter akin to that of the Pro One. It even has the same delay circuit from the new Maximus.

There are 3 types of pin for the pin matrix with resistances of 0 ohms on the black pin 10k ohms on the red one and blue giving a value of 100k, which allows for more flexibility in attenuating the signals you patch. Tom told us that Ample is particularly suited to percussion, with its snappy filter, and various clock sources available, and though Ample is in a desktop format, Tom has given us plenty of space between the controls so no accidental knob bumping can occur.

Octavia Fuzz in Eurorack with bags of character! // Cicely by Expert Sleepers

video upload by DivKid

"Say hello to Cicely! The next module in the analogue line up of Eurorack gear from Expert Sleepers. The module is based on the classic Roger Mayer designed Octavia design (think Jimi Hendrix octave fuzz), while the original is routed as part of guitar FX history here we’re exploring that under voltage control as part of a modular synth system.

You can apply these patches to other distortions you may have so watch along and give the patches a try, from wave shaping basic VCO shapes to dynamic end of chain fuzz, create unique delay shimmer and plenty more."

TIMING INDEX // CHAPTERS

00:00 Hellos and patch previews (what’s to come)

01:16 Introduction & feature run down

02:13 Basic VCO wave shaping + modulation

05:09 Dynamic end of chain Fuzz + self patching & low end tips

08:19 Smashing sine waves & Electro-Tastic overtones with audio rate modulation

10:21 Living in a land of Octavia Fuzz (with guitar)

11:12 Create your own crunchy delay shimmers with Cicely feedback loops

13:11 Ambient washes with Cicely delay feedback loops

14:10 Accent Glitches - Cicely dancing on top of sequences

16:08 A simple modulated drone

17:04 Envelope following for imparting rhythms onto chord pads

19:05 CV mangling (it’s not designed for it, but it’s great!)

20:37 Distorting Echoes for battling pitches (Os’s distortion patch tip)

"'Cicely' is an “octave fuzz” effect, inspired by the legendary 'Octavia' guitar pedal, created by Roger Mayer and most notably used by Jimi Hendrix. There is an interesting history of the pedal on Roger's website here. Cicely adapts the concept for the modular environment, adds some extra features, and of course puts the effect under CV control.

The effect is essentially one of adding an octave on top of the input note, but this only really applies to pure input tones – for more complex tones, the sound is changed in all sorts of interesting ways. This is combined with the possibility of overdriving the sound for even more edge, while the unique 'Centre' control adds asymmetrical clipping.

As a bonus feature, Cicely also includes an envelope follower."

Hoquetus modularis (featuring Disting EX)

video upload by Electrum Modular

"Exploring the wonderful world of hocketing, using Disting EX's 'Chord Engine'.
Recorded "live", adding only EQ + compression in Logic Pro.

Patch is described in the video. Just one clarification: as the sequencer spits out a new note every 2 bars, and the voices take it in turns to be the recipient of that new note, each voice changes note every 8 bars. As there are 7 notes in the sequence, this piece effectively repeats itself every 56 bars.

The piece excerpted in the first few seconds is “In saeculum breve,” a motet by an anonymous French composer, from the 13th-century manuscript, the Bamberg Codex. To avoid incurring the wrath of the copyright gods, I made my own version, inputting midi into Logic Pro and using brass instrument instead of voices, and adding convolution reverb with an impulse file recorded in a large church.

Expert Sleepers Aloysius - envelope/function generator

video upload by Expert Sleepers

"'Aloysius' is an envelope with an unusual AHDW (attack/hold/decay/wait) confguration, sometimes referred to as a trapezoid generator. CV control of all envelope times is provided. The envelope can be set to auto-trigger, turning it into a complex voltage-controlled LFO.

The shape of the attack and decay sections can be independently and continuously adjusted from exponential, through linear, to logarithmic.

The module is constructed entirely from analogue parts and discrete logic. There is no microcontroller or digital-to-analogue conversion involved and therefore no quantization of voltage levels or of the response time."

"Thanks for watching!
#modularsynth #eurorack #electroacoustic
This piece was in development for the last few weeks. This take was our last practice run before a performance at NYU on May 10th, 2023. The performance was rushed, and we were only given approximately 10 minutes to play it, which is significantly shorter than we prepared, so, therefore, we are putting out this version instead. You'll find a brief description of each of the 3 movements in this piece at the beginning of the video. Feel free to pause in order to read without rushing. Enjoy!

strokes v3.11 - multi-outputs update & built-in tutorial

video upload by Cong Burn

"Strokes is now a multi output VST3/AU/AUV3, each voice (synth or sampler) can be routed to an individual audio channel for further processing & recording.

Win / Mac / iOS
VST3 / AU / Standalone (iOS) / AUV3 (iOS)
https://www.congburn.co.uk/strokes

In this demo, I'm using AUM as a host with a single instance of Strokes AUV3 generating all of the audio you hear (except the siren!).

AUM allows me to route each Strokes voice to an individual output of my audio interface (expert sleepers es-8, located in the modular). I'm using 4 outputs which are connected to the Xone92 (mono).

CH1 - Bass
CH2 - Drums
CH3 - Chord 1
CH4 - Chord 2

Also on the table is a delay pedal on Aux 1 + a compressor & a saturator.

Also new
- Added a built in tutorial to help you create your first rhythm, melody and pattern variation. Access this on the info 'i' menu.
- Hovering over / tapping a parameter on the sequencer page will display the parameter’s name in the header."

Ambient eurorack modular soundscape inspired by the original Blade Runner film

video upload by Piotr Garbaczonek

"Thanks for watching!
"Take a look at my latest Eurorack modular synth patch! After a long day of school or work, it's always great to unwind with some patching. I spent over an hour creating a patch that features a stereo-brassy synth sound reminiscent of the iconic Yamaha CS-80. To achieve this, I used my Instruō Cruïnn module, expertly modulated by the øchd module. The audio signal is routed into the Qu-Bit Electronix Tone, a powerful quad filter with two Low Pass channels, each modulated by varying øchd's.

The output from these filter channels is then thoroughly managed by the Make Noise X-Pan module, which features modulated X-Fade and Pan parameters that are expertly controlled by two slow LFOs on separate øchd modules. The final signal passes through the Qu-Bit Aurora, which adds a touch of blur and mix to the sound before being routed to the VCA for additional volume control. Finally, the audio exits through the Expert Sleepers ES-9.

This patch is just one example of the endless possibilities of eurorack modular synthesis. Whether you're an experienced musician or just getting started, eurorack modules like these offer a world of sonic exploration and experimentation. So sit back, relax, and enjoy this immersive audio experience.
