Posthuman - Against The Clock

FACTmagazine
Published on Aug 16, 2017

"This is acid.

London duo Posthuman were at the forefront of the 303 revival long before it was fashionable. They’ve been making acid techno since 2001 and run a record label, radio show and club night called I Love Acid, which turned 10 this year.

Posthuman’s Josh Doherty rose to Against The Clock’s 10-minute challenge at his studio in London, where he created a thumping bassline using his Bass Bot 303 clone, Roland 707 and Fruity Loops in his signature acid style."

Julia Govor - Against The Clock

Published on Jan 2, 2019 FACTmagazine

"Julia Govor has lived many musical lives. Starting out as a singer in a well-known military band in Russia, she then spent time as music journalist, before ultimately settling on music production.

After many years playing underground institutions in Moscow, such as the now-closed Arma17, she made her way to New York, where she can now be found billed next to techno legends such as Jeff Mills, Richie Hawtin and Sven Väth.

Even though according to Govor, 'for music, there is never enough time', we visited her Brooklyn studio to put her Against The Clock. Using just a synthesizer and a Tempest drum machine, she was able to put together a gorgeous slice of whiplash-inducing techno in just 10 minutes."

Against The Clock - Tukico (Hoshiko Yamane)

Published on Mar 27, 2019 FACTmagazine

"Japanese violinist and composer Hoshiko Yamane met legendary German synth masters Tangerine Dream in 2011 and has performed and toured with them ever since. In 2013, however, she launched her own experimental side-project, Tukico.

For this week's Against The Clock, Yamane gave us an exclusive look at this project's live iteration, delivering a hypnotic improvisation in just 10 minutes using a loop pedal, a Moog synthesiser and her five-string electric Viola.

Joe Hertz - Access Virus TI2 Synth - Gear Guide

Published on Jan 23, 2018 FACTmagazine

"A must-have synth according to the Brixton producer.

Late last year, electronic R&B rising star Joe Hertz treated us to an excellent Against The Clock at his South London studio. But, we wondered at the time, what's the deal with the Virus TI2 bit of hardware by Access he used during that session?

We asked Joe to give us rundown of that most treasured instrument, explaining to us why the Virus TI2 is one of the most unique synths on the market.

In the video, Joe breaks down its key features and demonstrates how easy, versatile and user-friendly it is. One word: want."

De Sluwe Vos - In The Studio

Published on Nov 28, 2017 FACTmagazine

"Vintage synths, classic drum machines and a seriously impressive modular system.

Known for releases on labels such as DJ Haus’ Unknown to the Unknown, 4 Lux, Soulfood and Patron Records, De Sluwe Vos has made a significant impact on the Amsterdam house and techno scene over the past few years. His spacious studio is located on the city's outskirts, in a newly refurbished building also used by a number of producers from Amsterdam's thriving house and techno scene.

When we visited De Sluwe Vos to film his recent Against The Clock, we took the time to check out his space in closer detail, where he explained his production process, his obsession with the Roland TR-909 drum machine and how he uses his impressive modular set up as an 'idea machine'."

Django Django - Gear Guide - the Yamaha D85 Electone

Published on Apr 19, 2018 FACTmagazine

"Found on eBay for just £30.

We recently visited Django Django’s north London studio to set the band the challenge of making a track in 10 minutes as part of our Against The Clock series. While we were there, one instrument caught our eye: keyboard player Tommy Grace’s rare Yamaha organ.

Made in 1977, the Yamaha D85 Electone was the GarageBand of its day, featuring three keyboards and an auto-accompaniment section that plays simple rhythms, allowing you to play a whole orchestra from one instrument.

In the video above, Grace shows us how it works and tells us how cheap and easy they are to get your hands on – as long as you have a van to transport it."

Leafcutter John - Against The Clock

Published on Apr 17, 2019 FACTmagazine

"For the past 20 years, John Burton – aka Leafcutter John – has been at the forefront of experimental composition, constructing his own technological systems out of hardware and software to make ornate, complex electronica.

Ahead of the release of his seventh album on Border Community this week, we visited Burton at his studio to see what he could create with his one-of-a-kind setup in just 10 minutes, using Max, a home-made light interface and modular system to manipulate a collection of field recordings. The result – beautiful chaos.

Yes! Come Parade With Us is released on Border Community on April 19."

Awanto 3 - Against The Clock

Published on Jun 21, 2017 FACTmagazine

Constructing a track with an Akai MPC 2000 XL. It's interesting seeing it all come together in the end.

"Steven van Hulle aka Awanto 3 is an integral part of Amsterdam's music scene. He's a regular on the city's Rush Hour and Dekmantel labels, using his background in hip-hop, soul and disco to craft sun-drenched house music.

Following the release of his second album, Gargamel, we visited the producer at his studio in Amsterdam to see what he could make in 10 minutes. As we discovered, he's an MPC wizard, using it to sample vinyl, synths and even his own voice."

Georgia - Against The Clock

Premiere in progress. Started 7 minutes ago FACTmagazine

10 minutes to compose a track.

"It’s been a banner 2019 for North West Londoner and multi-instrumentalist Georgia. After making her name as a session drummer for artists such as Mica Levi and Kate Tempest, her heady swerve into electro-pop this year landed her spots on BBC Radio 1’s A playlist and an appearance at Glastonbury’s Park Stage.

This week we sit in while she works magic on her beloved Dave Smith OB-6, Roland SH-101 and Nord Wave synths and layers EBow strummed sitar lines around a rousing four-on-the-floor kick drum beat.

Georgia’s Seeking Thrills LP arrives via Domino on January 10.

Filmed by Pedro Kuster and Pawel Ptak

Ferro - In The Studio

Published on Jan 2, 2018 FACTmagazine

"An analog den.

Jasper Verrijzer is an Amsterdam club scene mainstay. Working as a resident DJ and A&R for go-to imprint VBX Records, while producing house and techno as Ferro for the past three years, he's certainly tuned into the city's dance music frequencies.

After filming his impressive session for Against The Clock in November, we took a tour of Verrijzer's industrious studio space, which is located right in the centre of Amsterdam. Step inside his vintage synth and drum machine-packed utopia."

CYRK - Against The Clock

Published on Aug 15, 2018 FACTmagazine

"Sierra Sam and Pascal Hetzel may be based in Berlin, but their music as CYRK owes more to the sound of Detroit house and techno than contemporary German club music.

After years spent touring the world as a live act, the pair released their first productions in 2016 on their own self-titled label. Since then, they've released several records on labels including HIKE Recordings and, most recently, Rawax.

We visited their Berlin studio to see what they could do in 10 minutes with their massive collection of Eurorack modules, boutique synths and analog gear. The result? A big room techno beat that didn't disappoint."

Lady Starlight - Against The Clock

Published on Jun 7, 2017 FACTmagazine

"Techno in 10 minutes from one of Berlin's rising stars.

Lady Starlight's journey has been anything but ordinary. Formerly a tour DJ for Lady Gaga, Starlight found herself meeting UK techno veteran Surgeon after a show in his hometown of Birmingham and the pair have been collaborating ever since, regularly appearing at clubs and festivals across Europe.

Last month, she released her debut solo EP on respected techno label Stroboscopic Artefacts. Spanning four tracks of relentless 4/4, it got us eager to see what kind of music the producer could make with just 10 minutes in the studio and her formidable collection of gear."

Throwing Shade - Against The Clock

Published on Apr 13, 2017 FACTmagazine

"Kaleidoscopic sounds from an NTS favorite.

Throwing Shade's regular show on NTS Radio is one of the London station's best, offering an eclectic selection of weird and wonderful music from around the world.

Her own music is just as colorful. Last year's House of Silk EP, released on UK institution Ninja Tune, was a kaleidoscopic trip through glittering melodies and neon synth moods.

We met up with Throwing Shade in her West London studio, where we set her the challenge of making one of her signature pop tracks in just 10 minutes.
