Teleport - Hartmann Neuron Track

via Lord Avon in the comments of this Hartmann Neuron post.

"I owned a neuron for a while, it was the first synth in YEARS to get my interest (and to date, also the last one)... I made a track purely with the Neuron called 'Teleport', multi-tracked and mixed in ProTools (reverb is protools, everything else is Neuron).

excerpt (900Kb)

Full version (6.1Mb)

I had to sell it due to financial reasons, if I had the money, I'd buy another tomorrow."

Hartmann Neuron VS Neuronal Software Synth

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"The Hartmann Neuron was an extremely complex and powerful keyboard synthesizer sold by Hartmann Music from around 2001-2005. Using advanced digital modelling, it could resynthesise sounds with all the complexity of acoustic instruments, giving the player control over physical parameters such as body size and material.
The Neuron was a commercial flop due to its cost and development problems, but more approachable is the Neuron VS, a software version for Windows PC/MAC.
This VST instrument comes with its own USB hardware controller, the Nuke, which acts as a real-time performance controller and as an editor using the supplied Model Maker software.
It won't run under Vista or Windows 7.

Best Ambient Synth Shootout #105: Hartmann Neuron VS - Song 2

video by Christian's Sonic Spaces

Song 1 here

"This is the second song with the Neuron VS. It's the software (VST) version of the Hartmann Neuron, a novel hardware synthesizer introduced in 2001 based on artificial neural networks used for sound synthesis. The software version of the instrument, was released in 2005.

I used for the recording just on the opening pad an Eventide Blackhole. All other FX are directly from the Neuron VS.

To create the complete song I recorded consecutively several stereo tracks. The final song was then mastered with a bit EQ and compression on some tracks and some limiting on the master track."

Hartmann VS

images via this auction.
"Neuron VS is a PC and MAC compatible application. The package includes Nuke - an ergonomic hardware controller, built of steady aluminum and attachable to the computer via the USB connector.

Neuron VS is basically built on the same sound engine like the Neuron Hardware Synthesizer. It is coming with a highly sophisticated graphical user interface that perfectly interacts with the hardware controller box. Neuron VS includes 2 Resynators, the Blender module, the Mod- and Slicer Module, a Silver Unit (Multimode Filter plus Time and Frequency Effect unit) and 7 ADSR Shapers (for more details see feature list). Compared to the Hardware Synthesizer, Model maker, Surround capabilities, 4 levels / 4 times Shapers, high-end Delay and Reverb (and - obviously - the beautiful, luxurious user interface of the Keyboard version) are not included.

Neuron VS ships with 300 sounds and 200 Models. Its sound and sound shaping capabilities are amazingly close to those of the Neuron Keyboard synthesizer. This instrument will meet the expectations of many musicians out there, that do not have the money to spend on a Keyboard version - or who simply want total integration of the Neuron into their virtual studio setup.

The Nuke Controller box
With the button you select, which of the Neuron VS Modules is being controlled by the stick:

* Resynator 1
* Resynator 2
* Silver

It is not possible to work on the settings of those Parameter groups without Nuke.

Nuke offers 4 freely definable endless knobs (encoders), that are being set on a third page of the Neuron VS software.

Nuke is a valuable piece of hardware, that was designed to perfectly fit in your hand. It is made of aluminum and offers exactly the same kind of stick controller and encoders you find on the Neuron keyboard. The hand rest is made of special soft synthetic material.

Nuke is included in the Neuron VS software package.

The Resynator Page
The Resynator page allows for the real time setting of all Resynators’ parameters. The Resynators give access to the very heart of a sound. Neuron VS features 2 Resynators - each capable of driving one Model.

Neuron VS comes with a huge variety of Models (ca. 300). The Resynators (and Silver) need , the hardware controller to drive the parameter sets represented by the two bubbles on this page (and the bubble on the silver page). All movements of Nuke’s stick can be recorded in real time and stored as part of a sound.

Additionally, Neuron VS includes 7 ADSR shapers, that are switched by simply clicking on one of the smaller icons.

The Blender offer 10 different settings to merge and mix Models or parts of Models together.

The Silver Page
Silver includes a very powerful multimode filter ( 24dB low pass, 12dB low pass, 6dB low pass, 6dB high pass and band pass) plus two multi effect units. Cutoff and Frequency are being controlled crosswise by the stick or one can use the scrollers to set the parameters separately.

The Frequency FX Module includes a high end EQ / Compressor, Distortion, Ring Modulator, Decimator and SP Warp Effects. The Time FX Module includes Stereo Spread, Left/Right Delay, Flanger, Phaser and Chorus Effects.

Silver includes a dedicated ADSR Shaper for the Filter. All Shapers can be set to Repeat Mode - adding one more very flexible cyclic effect.

Besides that, the silver page is the home of the Mod and the Slicer. Mod represents an LFO. Slicer is a Neuron exclusive Module that allows for cyclic “3 dimensional” modulations.

The Nuke Page
On this page of the software the setting of the freely definable endless knobs (encoders) is being managed. Select the parameter you want to control for each knob and store the setting together with the sound.

Features
* Innovative and award winning neural synthesis engine (template driven Multi-Component Particle Transform Synthesis with real time controllable synthesis model parameters, Artificial Neural Network controlled adaptive sound analysis for the parametric transformation of musical monophonic and polyphonic sounds)

* Blender module for manipulating one timbre (from resynator 1) with the properties of another (resynator 2)
* 8 different blender types
* Modulation module Low frequency oscillator with 12 waveforms
* Slicer module for the generation of multidimensional, cyclic modulation with 12 waveforms
* Silver module with multimode filter (24dB lowpass, 12dB lowpass, 6dB lowpass, 6dB highpass, bandpass)

20 Electronics ECHT - New Hardware Keyboard Synthesizer Design from Axel Hartmann

A couple of renders by Axel Hartmann, sent my way via Soviet Space Child.

You might remember the previous teaser pic here, which kind of mixed design cues from both Moog and Waldorf. That was no surprise as Axel Hartmann designed the "look" of Waldorf and Moog synths as well as numerous others.

Axel Hartmann's first self branded synth was the Hartmann Neuron.

The question is what will 20 Electronics produce? Is it a new design house similar to Design Box, or is it a new hardware manufacturer like Hartmann?

ECHT appears to translate into a number of meanings. As a noun it is marriage. (strike that. I accidentally grabbed the Dutch translation). In German it translates into "real", "authentic" like in "the real deal".

Update via Holger Steinbrink of Waldorf:

"Only 20 black and 20 silver will be made | Waldorf / Sledge Synthesizer Engine | SPL Supra Op-Amp audio technology | Wavetables | Hartmann Neuron Synthesizer Sampleset | Pure aluminium shell, milled from a massive block | Collapsable, milled ultra thin aluminium panel | Custom-built pure aluminium knobs and wheels | Custom-built acrylic-glass switches | Highest quality, custom-built, all black Fatar TP 8 Keybed"

Hartmann Neuron

Click here for images via this auction.

Details (apparently pulled from the Hartmann site which is still up, btw):
"Neuron's synthesis engine is powered by the technology found in neural networks (for more on this, see the section "Neural Networks"). It uses models as the basis for sound generation. In conceptual terms, these models are comparable to samples, and they are derived by analyzing audio samples. This means that in principle, any auditory event can provide the raw material for creating and processing sound in Neuron. It ships with some 100 of these models on its internal hard disk. Though this is a huge store of sound design resources, you are free to analyze audio resources (samples) of your own, using our proprietary ModelMaker software, and archive them in the form of user models. These models contain the actual sound as well as the parameter sets that were captured during neural analysis. Parameter sets are subdivided in up to three levels, and they may be manipulated via the resynators' sticks. That makes Neuron the first synthesizer offering dynamic parameter assignment tailored specifically to the sound that you select for processing. "

Hartmann Neuron

Title link takes you to shots via this auction.

Details:
" This RARE 21st-Century keyboard represents a unique approach to sound modeling and reproduction! Like a sentient being, Neuron recognizes a sound. But more than that, its intelligence is such that it puts at your disposal parameters whose structures are adapted DYNAMICALLY to suit this sound. Ant that makes Neuron the first synthesizer with a brain full of responsive synapses, that is, variable rather than fixed parameter assingments. In simpler terms, the keyboard applies pattern recognition based on neural networks to digital sound samples and extracts parameters which can be controlled by the numerous knobs, wheels, and x-y joysticks (whose movements can actually be recorded, similar to the motorized sliders of high-end digital mixers) populating the front panel. The parameters being controlled vary from sound to sound and represent sonic aspects that no other keyboard - or human beings, for that matter - could ever possibly recognize. The Hartmann website permits downloading of ModelMaker software which permits you to create your own samples and import them via USB to the Neuron for subsequent processing. Unlike conventional synths, with their VCOs, VCFs, VCAs, EGs, LFOs, and the like, the Neuron consists of custom exotic modules such as Resynators, a Blender, Shapers, a Programmer, a Mod, a Slicer, a Silver (incuding Surround Sound controls), and Master Effects. Accessories include a fabric dust cover, a damper pedal, a footswitch, an expression pedal, a bag of spare parts, a power cord, a user manual, a Model & Parameterset Info guide, a digital coax output cable, and an SKB hardcase."

via the listing: "Incredible synth for soundscapes, atmospheres, soundtracks ...etc. Bought brand new, then developed the usual neuron fault... so was packed away without being used for 8 years. Then I saw a Neuron survival kit on ebay. Hence this neuron has a new mother board fitted and new hard drive installed (Much larger than the original, with the latest operating system and models installed, sold by one of the original neuron sound designer guys) It works perfectly now, and is like a brand new machine. I have the original software on my old G4 mac which I could copy onto a disk if required (Although I cant guarantee this will work!) However the lovely people at www.surroundsfx.com have a few goodies to help out the Neuron gang..."

"The German-made Hartmann Neuron was a polyphonic synthesizer that attempted to break new ground using a new form of synthesis and sound-modeling they say was based on technology found in neural networks. What the Neuron actually does is it analyzes audio files (samples) and creates digital computer models of these sounds which can then be re-synthesized and processed using the extensive amount of on-board data-wheels and joysticks with control of more 'musical' sonic aspects such as instrument shape, size and acoustic behavior. The joysticks allow for real-time tweaking of up to three parameters at once - 3D modeling in a true 5.1 surround sound environment.Comes with original manual, power cord and extra orange joystick knobs.”

About the Little Phatty

In case you missed it, the following touches on how the new Moog Little Phatty was born. Note that Axel Hartmann, designer of the user interface for many Waldorf products, the Andromeda A6 and of course the designer of the Hartmann Neuron, was involved. It's fascinating to realize that the physical design of the Little Phatty has ties to Waldorf, the A6, and the Hartmann Neuron.

"Mike talks about the conception of the Little Phatty.

I cannot think of a better transitional topic from my previous memo “Moog without Bob” to “Little Phatty”; Bob’s last project. He was very excited about the possibilities of this keyboard from our earliest discussions. I believe he felt that the technology and the team that we had (have) in place would finally enable him to bring a synth to thousands of musicians who were previously in no financial position to enjoy a Moog synth. I am very proud to say that is exactly what we are about to accomplish with the release of the Little Phatty.
As a starter, let me give you a bit of history about the development of the project. I am not exactly sure when the concept first entered Bob’s mind but I do have notes on it from early 2004 when we had a product planning meeting and Turnkey requested us to give this some consideration but I am sure he had thought about of it long before that. Then during the Summer of 2004 Steve and Bob really began the serious work of technical conception which resulted in Steve writing the initial technical spec in August, 2004. From there my memory gets a little fuzzy because 2005 was such a difficult year. What I do remember is that we sent off our first ideas to Axel Hartmann around October of 2004 and we met with him at the NAMM Show in 2005. (Axel Hartmann and his Design Box industrial design associates have been a long time collaborators of the company.) At NAMM and then subsequently at last year’s Messe, the first concepts of this keyboard began to take shape.

From there, Cyril Lance came on board. While he did not have the time he wanted with Bob, Cyril is an extremely talented engineer in his own right. This will be evident to those who discover the Little Phatty. The project team that worked on this design has come from the far corners of the world – Asheville, North Carolina where Moog is headquartered; Germany where Design Box is located; software from our consultants in California; and importantly our Chinese partners. Yes, our Chinese partners. No, we are not making this keyboard in China. It still will be made right along side the Voyager in Asheville but without the component level support from our Chinese partner we could never reached the low price point of this product.

So what about the name, Little Phatty? Taking a cue from Bob’s choice of the name “moogerfooger” for our line of effects modules, we adopted the moniker “Little Phatty” for our new synth because of its irreverent; tongue-in-cheek nature. At first it was just funny, but it grew on us as the personality of the synth developed. The Little Phatty name is a description of what we wanted this synth to be: smaller, less imposing, a chip off the old block as far as the sound character, and a price point people have a chance of reaching. It is a true Moog synth. It sounds really fat and ballsy. In this way we feel the name echoes the “minimoog”. Bob liked the name Little Phatty. He had a great sense of humor about these things. I know if he were still here we would be enjoying some great laughs, and I think he would really love the way the LP sounds. It definitely contains the sound that he created.

So that’s it. We hope you will buy one, enjoy it, and drop us a note about your experiences with this or any other Moog product.

As always, we appreciate every single one of you.

Warm Regards,

Mike Adams"

In via reader voss. Well this sucks. We knew it was coming, but not this soon. Also, I did not expect the site to go down this quickly. Hopefully someone saved it off like the Waldorf site. If someone did and wants me to host it, just shoot me an email - matrixsynth [@] hotmail.com. I wish I grabbed the site before this.

______ mail from Denis Goekdag _____

Dear users of Hartmann Instruments,

please excuse this unsolicited email, but i believe this information
be of interest to you as a registered Hartmann user.

As of today, the Hartmann Music servers have gone offline due to
Hartmann Music's ongoing file for bankruptcy, which means that there
will be no further techsupport or downloads available from Hartmann.
However, i have decided to provide free techsupport for these
products at the site of my own company, Surround SFX. This site is in
no way affiliated with Hartmann, so please be aware that i can
obviously not offer warranty, spareparts or software updates. You
will, however, find a couple of cool FAQ's, How-To's, free models to
download and a community of users that will gladly help you should
you have problems with or questions about your Hartmann
product....oh, and *me*, the former techsupport-guy at Hartmann ;-)
Surround SFX will also be offering some exciting products for and
around the Neuron/VS series of synths in early 2006.

Here's the URL for the support forum:
