Why to Love the Korg NTS-2 Oscilloscope (spoiler: because it's WAY more than just a scope)

video upload by Rochefsky

"On my modular eurorack system I take my oscilloscope / tuner for granted - and on my desktop synths I really needed a similar solution. I always need a tuner, I often want to see the shape of the audio or LFO modulation waves I'm using, I also often want to check the voltage outputs of certain CV signals - and with my semi-modulars - like the Moog Mother-32 or Grandmother synth, I could really use a secondary LFO for modulation - and I'm not always near my eurorack system for that.
The Korg NTS-2 Oscilloscope has become my perfect answer. It was a $229 kit (including a beautiful $45 hardcover book...) and does all of the above with loads of options.
In this video I'm just giving an overview of most of the features in case you're considering it and want a walkthrough before you buy.
Here's what's in the video:
0:00 - intro
1:07 - inputs/outputs
2:15 - controls
2:45 - modes
3:05 - Scope
6:00 - Wave Generator
9:20 - FFT / Spectrum
10:25 - Tuner
11:38 - Global Settings
12:10 - surprise.

Using an #oscillator is a great learning tool and a sound design tool - and the Korg NTS-2 not only gives you that, but so much more."

strokes v3.11 - multi-outputs update & built-in tutorial

video upload by Cong Burn

"Strokes is now a multi output VST3/AU/AUV3, each voice (synth or sampler) can be routed to an individual audio channel for further processing & recording.

Win / Mac / iOS
VST3 / AU / Standalone (iOS) / AUV3 (iOS)
https://www.congburn.co.uk/strokes

In this demo, I'm using AUM as a host with a single instance of Strokes AUV3 generating all of the audio you hear (except the siren!).

AUM allows me to route each Strokes voice to an individual output of my audio interface (expert sleepers es-8, located in the modular). I'm using 4 outputs which are connected to the Xone92 (mono).

CH1 - Bass
CH2 - Drums
CH3 - Chord 1
CH4 - Chord 2

Also on the table is a delay pedal on Aux 1 + a compressor & a saturator.

Also new
- Added a built in tutorial to help you create your first rhythm, melody and pattern variation. Access this on the info 'i' menu.
- Hovering over / tapping a parameter on the sequencer page will display the parameter’s name in the header."

"Also new is a built in tutorial that'll help you create your first rhythm, melody and pattern variation. Throw in the new manual and the learning curve isn't looking so steep -> https://drive.google.com/open?id=1hViEDttYSAIFygN1Y4kWXByMXfX5r3K4"

Noise Engineering Clep Diaz Tutorial & Cheat Sheet - Learning & Using the 4hp CV/LFO Generator

video upload by Rochefsky

"Clep Diaz is an incredibly powerful CV + LFO generator eurorack module from Noise Engineering in a very small 4hp package - with simple controls and expressive results to spice up your modular patches. I've created a 1-page cheat sheet for this module, and this video is the companion tutorial to describe the capabilities and operation of Clep Diaz while referring to the cheat sheet.

Find your way quickly to the contents of this video:
0:00 - Intro
0:52 - Modes step, rand, lfo
1:50 - Step order
2:18 - Count Encoder
3:20 - Step & Reset Buttons
3:55 - Clock Input
4:22 - Reset Input
4:33 - CV Input for Count
4:45 - Bi/Uni-Polar Outputs
5:15 - BOC Output
6:00 - Patch Notes
6:38 - Add Reset & CV
9:00 - Jam & Cheat Sheet

The Patch is mostly a @NoiseEngineering jam, with the exception of Pamela's New Workout clocking and providing some modulation to Clep Diaz inputs.
Vox Digitalis - 2 of 'em - provide the pitch CVs to both the bass line and the main voice VCOs.
Clep Diaz of course modulating two VCOs.
Manis Iteritas is the bass line VCO.
Cursus Iteritas Percido is the string-like voice being modulated by Clep Diaz on the TIME and FOLD parameter CV inputs.
Lapsus Os provides some control over the level of the bi- nd Uni-polar outputs of Clep - although I left those alone at base voltage throughout this video/patch.
Electus Versio provides effects.
Mordax Data is my Oscilliscope.

'Old School Jam' All-modular, Step Sequencer, Bucket Brigade Delay, Eurorack FX, and no quantiser!

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"Un-quantised, old-school sequencer fun: Inspired by early sequenced electronica such as Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze, much of whose music used a Moog 960 sequencer, which didn't have quantising features, and were sometimes difficult to tune accurately or reliably. Such as the track 'Phaedra' by Tangerine Dream, during which the Moog performing the opening pattern had to be re-tuned during the actual recording, and it was left on the album! Yet it sounds great, it's imperfect tuning adds so much to the atmosphere of the music, irrespective if it was deliberate or a 'happy accident'.

Here I use an un-quantised sequencer, in fact an Erica Synths Sequential Switch, with it's CV expander that turns it into a great little 8-step sequencer. I also run it through the AJH Synth CV Mix, to offset the CV going to the oscillator, allowing me to push the output into the negative CV range. I then send this shifted signal to the VCO's frequency modulation input instead of the 1V/Oct... just to make it more difficult to tune! Seriously though, this was a fun experiment, and taking off the digital stabilisers (or quantisers) once in a while is highly recommended, and a good learning experience. This was an all-modular session - no external FX or mixing, just Eurorack modules for all functions.

The AJH SYNTH Eurorack range consists of high-end modules, all hand-made in the UK, most of which are based on classic, vintage designs, authentically recreating the circuitry of much sought-after analogue instruments and technologies of the past, whilst greatly expanding them, and bringing them to modern Eurorack levels of convenience, limitless flexibility, and reliability.

Check out the AJH Synth playlists for module 'User Guides', and 'Patch of The Week' videos, which will be either performances or 'how to' guides, detailing functions/methods, and a range of sounds, some familiar, some less so, containing a patch sheet at the end to show you how to construct it for yourself.

Meet us and the modules in person this year at Superbooth 23, Berlin, on May 11th to 13th.

"My philosophy is to make beautiful, long-lasting instruments with musically functional user interfaces that will become heirlooms for future generations of music makers. I enjoy a day of soldering and prototyping in my workshop as much as a day in the studio immersed in sound.

I started tinkering with electronics and designing sound effects for school plays when I was a teenager. During high school, I worked hard to be able to buy a Juno 106, an Oberheim Matrix 1000, and an Akai sampler. Then, I studied electronic music and audio for film and video in college. I also started modifying organs and keyboards and learning how they worked. This led to starting a musical instrument parts and repair business I operated for over ten years.

In the back of my mind, I dreamed of designing synthesizers and effects processors. After moving on from the parts and repair business, I was hospitalized and nearly lost my life to COVID. During my recovery, I looked through all the designs and ideas I had accumulated for twenty years and decided it was time to begin making my ideas a reality.

The Vacuum Tube Ring Mod is our most popular module, and the one I patch in the most. It has more harmonics and edgy character than a typical solid state ring modulator. It is built using full-sized vintage vacuum tubes, ceramic tube sockets, and audio transformers. The look and feel was really important to me so it has a high-gloss aluminum front panel with a raised texture and UV-cured digital printing.

Every month we give away a free Eurorack module to one of our newsletter subscribers. We’ve given away Vacuum Tube Ring Mods, VCOs, Dual Morphing LFOs, and other fun modules. Worldwide shipping is included. You can sign up at https://www.stoelmusicsystems.com."

FM Synthesis Made Easy on Aalto Modular Synth for Your Computer by Madrona Labs

video upload by Madrona Labs

"Try patching in the DAW on Aalto Modular Soft Synth VST today.
Free demo download at madronalabs.com

FM SYNTHESIS!
By using two simple waveforms — one, as the audible 'carrier' whose frequency is modulated by the other (our LFO) — we can create harmonic or inharmonic tones using very rapid vibrato, based on the frequencies of these waveforms and the depth of the modulation.

FM synthesis was first discovered in the 1960’s by an ex-GI turned artist, John Chowning, who was initially scorned by his academic composer peers for his desire to make music with an //inhumane//computer. The speed by which a computer can modulate a waveform created new sounds beyond the capabilities of acoustic and analog instruments: the birth of a new sound! ✨

We can thank FM synthesis for the sounds of the 1980’s w the popularization of the Yamaha DX7 which allowed FM synthesis to infiltrate video games, movie soundtracks, and of course the power ballads! (Take My Breath Away! Take On Me!)

Interactive manual for the Pulsar-23

via SOMA Laboratory

"Mastering the interface of a complex semi-modular synth with hundreds of controls and functions onboard is not an easy task even for the most seasoned producer. It’s too much to memorize, and continuously checking the user manual gets annoying and interferes with the creative process. Even with using the search function you still end up scrolling up and down dozens of pages and going back and forth to understand how related features interact, a process that is more fiddly than convenient.

Why does it have to be like that? Instrument manuals - even for complex machines - are still just plain linear text with a structure that doesn't reflect the actual interface or workflow of the product it describes. Despite all the technological advances of our digital age, user manuals are still based on the same principles of how information was organized and accessed in manuscripts from over 2,000 years ago.

It's high time someone changed this! SOMA Labs designed a new and more user-friendly approach to synthesizer manuals that we believe should become the new industry standard, offering unparalleled efficiency and immediate access to relevant information through a visual (touch) interface.

What really is a synth's interface? You can compare it to a territory, like a town or a forest, where we have various objects placed in space. If each control has just one function we can compare it with 2D space, if we have multifunctional controls or menus we can speak about a 3D space. How do you best describe a space to someone else? Of course, with a map! What should a 21st century map be like? Interactive!

SOMA is therefore proud to present its new interactive manual for the PULSAR-23 drum machine, SOMA's most complex synth to date. It consists of a map of the synth’s interface where each element is clickable.

Just click on any button, connector or knob and get its description along with highlighting elements that are connected to or depend on it with the immediate possibility to check what they do.

As PULSAR-23 is a semi-modular instrument, all patching points have suggestions about which other patch points you could connect them to (about 1,000 patching tips!).

So it's also a kind of light patching tutorial.

The concept of interactive manuals can be developed much deeper and better, and we therefore invite our industry colleagues to further develop and refine this approach to user manuals for musical instruments. Let’s make synth manuals more user-friendly, easy to learn and more efficient, lowering the learning curve for new musicians and freeing up users' minds for pure creativity!

Welcome to the world of PULSAR-23!"

Sunset at the balcony while playing synths + emergency radio

video upload by Agustín Spinetto

"I've been playing my modular synth at the balcony and catch some of the colors of the sunset. Also connected my emergency radio, that has a winding crank for getting electricity, and live looped it using the Monsoon module. Everything was controlled and played with the sequencer from Korgs that I bought a couple of months ago, and I am still learning how to get the best from it.
I specially like how it gets dark as time pass by, Check it out!

Overlooked Module #12: Pluton Modular Envade

video upload by Poorness Studios

"This is the next video in my Overlooked Modules series. Today, I'm taking a closer look at the Envade from Pulton Modular. This fun module outputs a gate and a envelope with every press of the button. It can be purchased a DIY kit or a completed module.

You can find Pluton's Etsy page here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/PlutonModular"

You can find Poorness Studios' overlooked module videos here.

Designed to have more utility than the usual Eurorack button module, Envade has a built in rise-fall slew output in addition to its gate out!

2022 UPDATE:
The panel is now 8HP, as opposed to 9 in the original design (The electronics are unchanged). We're learning more every day, so please stick with us as we improve!
If you bought Envade with the 9HP panel and would like us to send you an 8HP replacement panel, please get in touch through the contact seller option or via the e-mail address on our website.
--------------------------

So far we've found many fun ways to use it in patches:
+ Use the gate to step a sequencer while using the CV as the envelope
+ Control a filter with a slow envelope for beautiful, ambient input
+ Set the rise time to a low value to use it as a sensitive, expressive envelope that changes in intensity based on how long you press

But there are infinite other ways to use it!
It's especially great for use in live jamming, due to its expressive and tweakable nature.

This is the first module we've ever designed, but we're proud to present it to you all! It's spent about 4 months in careful development as I learned (and continue to learn) the best practices of analog design.

We've already begun work on more modules, and are excited to grow with you!

Build guide, power, and size information available at https://plutonmodular.com/modules/ENVade.html

RIP Rob Hordijk - Creator of the Blippoo Box, Benjolin, and Hordijk Modular Systems

video uploads by Pedro Trotz

"Rob Hordijk explains his modular designs at the European Electro Music Event 2012 that took place at Mallorca - Spain."

Sad news in via an anonymous reader today, who spotted the following from Pedro Trotz on Mod Wiggler. Those of you that have been following the site should be familiar with Rob Hordijk's work through numerous posts on the site. Two of his most famous creations were the Benjolin and Blippoo Box.

"I am deeply saddened to announce that my friend and mentor, Robert Ernst Hordjik, passed away earlier today. He was an important part of my life and I am sure also of many others here. He will be greatly missed.

I first met him in the Chateau Sonore event he organized in Belgium, in July 2007. There, lots of similar souls shared our passion for electronic music and electronic instruments. There was a lot of G2 and modular talk, but also performances, instrument demos, concerts, rehearsals... That's when I first heard of the Blippoo, one of his first creations that made him famous.

A few years later he started his work on the modular system that has his name. I felt so grateful for his initiative in Belgium that I couldn't help but planning a follow-up, this time in Mallorca. This time, our meeting had a lot less participants but it was an even better opportunity to make friendships that will last for a lifetime. I believe that in this meeting, in a trip we made to the north coast of the island, between the mountains of the Serra de Tramontana and the Mediterranean Sea, is when Rob decided that he wanted to retire to Mallorca. I can't blame him. It was the middle of January and we were having a pic-nic on the side of a curvy road facing the sea and enjoying what we natives call "the little summer" which is something that happens from time to time in mid-winter when the sea suddenly calms and temperatures rise up to 20 degrees Celsius.

We had a Benjolin workshop, we talked a lot about his design philosophy, and I was happy to record the first series of videos about his modular System. The ones you can find in my Youtube channel. After that series of videos I asked him to build a modular for me and soon enough he came back to Mallorca to deliver it in person.

During this visits I introduced him to Biyi and they automatically made a great connection. Biyi went a few times to The Hague to assist him in the building of Blippoos and modular systems. He even built his own under Rob's supervision. We all three had the idea to start a company in Mallorca where Rob would make the designs, Biyi build the stuff and I would take care of the business side of things. It was all set-up. As soon as his obligations in the Netherlands were fulfilled he would come to Mallorca. The moment arrived but almost at the same time his illness and COVID made things extra difficult.

In one of our talks he said to me that the Benjolin, the Blippoo and the Modular System were his dearest creations and that he was honored to have made so many people happy with them. Let's honor his memory by using them and making the most beautiful sound imaginable.

Farewell, my friend. I love you." - trotz

The following is from the Synth DIY wiki page on Hordijk.

Born in 1958, self described "synthesizer designer and builder,[3]" Rob Hordijk began learning electronics from around age 12 after developing a fascination with the glowing tubes in stereo amplifiers.[1][4] When he was 14 his father who had noticed young Rob's interest gave him a subscription to an electronics course, which lead to an examination for a ham radio license.

Trained as a designer and not a musician, Rob came from an arts background, studying as a sculptor and jeweler in the 1970s. He approached electronic music in a similar spirit to abstract painting, inspired by the ambient works of Brian Eno, and Luigi Russolo's Intonarumori instruments; where attempts were made to blur the boundaries between music and art:[1]

"In those days I was quite interested in the idea of sound as a material to be sculpted, in the same way you can sculpt wood and metal. [...] You can make mechanical objects that make all sorts of sounds, or you can make electronic objects that make all sorts of sounds. but what I like about the electronic objects is that you don't see what makes the sound. [...] It opens the way to sort of make it a bit mysterious."[1]

In the early 1980s as various integrated circuits, micro-controllers, and processors became available to hobbyists, Rob began buying things such as the early Curtis chips and RCA 1802 based SuperElf processor board out of curiosity more than professional ambition.[1][5] Later switching to an Apple ][+ and the Mountain Hardware Music System, for which he developed a Forth language version that could do all sorts of stuff with the Mountain cards, like KarplusStrong-type plucked string sounds and pitch shifting.[5] His first introduction to a DSP was to the DMX1000 around 1984. In 1986 he switched to Atari ST and an Akai S900.[5] These days he is a Clavia Nord Modular G2 aficionado.[5]

"I am not really a gear freak. But I do believe in mastering synthesis techniques, in making synthesis a second nature, so to be able to fully concentrate on the creative processes."[5]

After finishing art school, Rob also completed 11 years of study in Information Technology, learning about design methods and inventory control.[1] As well as his own instruments Rob worked on the Nord Modular G2 including contributing many patches to the Nord Modular online community, and wrote a comprehensive unofficial manual of the instrument. He has produced music for environments, buildings, film, and dance performances, but is yet to produce an official release on a label.[5] As of 2022 Rob has announced his retirement and will no longer be taking orders.[6]

Design Philosophy
Rob's personal definition of a modular synthesizer is more to do with modulation than modularity; referring to functional modules as 'sections'. Everything is supposed to be able to modulate or effect everything else. All levels within the system are optomised for comparability with one another.[1]

Additional details via Make Noise:

"Make Noise is proud to announce our newest module, the XPO!

The XPO, or Stereo Prismatic Oscillator, is a Voltage Controlled Analog Oscillator designed for generating Sine waves, Triangle waves, Sawtooth and Spike waves, Sub-Octaves, Stereo Timbre Modulations (including Pulse Width Modulation and Wavefolding), Oscillator SYNC, Linear FM and more in the analog domain.

The XPO is designed to be the Stereo VCO complement to our Stereo Filter, the QPAS. The two modules share the core idea of complex circuits being controlled in multiple dimensions in the stereo field by a few powerful parameters. The Stereo Prismatic Oscillator also makes a particularly useful patch buddy for the STO, Mimeophon, and X-PAN.

The Story of the XPO by Tony Rolando

I was lying awake in bed at 3 am thinking about music and synthesizers, on this early morning specifically, the voice panning of the OB8. So simple, so effective. A bank of 8 analog pan-pots is tucked into the side of the instrument to let the musician choose the exact placement of each voice in the stereo field. As you play the instrument, notes may dance around your head. This led me to think about how Oberheim and most other synthesizer designers through the 70s and early 80s primarily used Pulse Width Modulation for waveform animation. Don Buchla's wavefolding techniques had not caught on. PWM has been more or less the same for decades and there is not a whole lot of difference between PWM in one instrument to another. Some allow you to modulate further than others. A few even allow you to go all the way to 0% or 100% Width. PWM was usually generated from a Saw or Triangle core, and while I tend to prefer PWM generated from a Tri-Core, the difference is subtle. The bigger difference is the filter that follows. PWM has a way of tickling the resonance of a filter that can really make the sound come alive.

This led me to think about Stereo filtering. How could a synth sound more stereo? At Make Noise we have voice panning with the XPAN, stereo filtering with the QPAS, and stereo echo verb with the Mimeophon. Surely, this was enough stereo modulation.

Then it occurred to me, why couldn't PWM be stereo? It would be very effective at creating a stereo image since the amplitude of both Left and Right would be almost identical, while still offering dramatic stereo timbral shifts. I thought to myself, surely somebody has done Stereo PWM already. I needed to research this idea. So I wrote about it in the notepad I keep on the nightstand and I eventually fell back asleep.

I woke up the next day and I immediately saw the note, I tried to read it...
