"30 years later and here we are... glorious sound makes that possible. All honor and praise to the geniuses at R. A. Moog Co, especially Bill Hemsath, and Mr. Moog himself, a person with whom I (MSR) shared a lunch space at NAMM in the 1990s—it's something folks.

Some internal patching on "Registered Pulses", "Voo R U", and "1st Midimini V30", not that I can remember what went where. No FX however, (with the exception of a wet channel on Rach of Ages 2), no compression, limiting, only a touch of some spot normalizing on several tracks. Essentially raw and un-pestered, synth and factory direct honesty—still such a lonely word.

Oh yes, and I created a few stereo tracks from multiple takes; who could resist? I'm sure you can spot them.

Enjoy and Merry Christmas,
Marc St Regis 12/24/19"

MIDIMINI V30 - $2999

"Many can recall dialing up Midim-g/Midimini patches that fit a song so perfectly that they inspired even greater creativity; shapely, sometimes sinuous sounds whose essense called out to you; emotive sounds you never wanted to change; sounds you lovingly tracked, notated and revered; sounds as vital as the lyrics or lead vocal—that solid, insistent, articulate bounce, bravado, and twangy bang. Was there another sensible, MIDI-driven rackmount choice for immaculate synth-bass and lead lines?

November 2019 brings the SE Midimini V30 to the table, and nothing has been lost in the translation of this end-of-decade Analog essential. A raft of brand-new hardware features, extensive software sweetening, and modular connections open the window even wider to an already stunning Analog view.

It's highlight time again:

Through-hole build: Every. Single. PC board.
Classic 4-pole, 24 db/oct, voltage-controlled Lowpass Ladder Filter, with voltage-controlled Cutoff.
Semi-Modular Mini: Standard issue CV & Gate, and # OutsToOuts-friendly patchability of voltage, amplifier, and key tonal mastering tap points (1/8" Eurorack Connections).
Classic Midimini Cross Mod and Boomstar-perfected Ring Mod.
Amp Drive: Boomstar Modular AMP saturation and overdrive imported into 'V30 world.
Output Feedback loop and gain control—the old Low Output to External Input hack—hardwired and fine-tuned—interacts expressivley with Amp Drive.
MIDI-syncable, AFM*-capable, multi-waveform LFO, routable to VCF and VCO.
LFO Out patch point for deep modulation or oscillation creation.
LFO Gate (LFO pulse of VCF/VCA) from the SE-02.
OSC 1 Triangle Wave to amplifier (bypasses VCF) for high Resonance setting/low frequency compensation.
Sweepable OSC Oscillator 2 to Oscillator 1 Sync.
Handy Boomstar Drone feature.
Envelope 2 Master Mode: ENV2 (VCA) assumes control of Filter (VCF) Envelope.
Expressive Linear and Exponential Glide.
Front Panel-mounted External Audio input with level control.
Independent Release control of Filter and Amplifier.
Boomstar MIDI Learn feature for MIDI, Aftertouch and Modwheel.
Low/Last/High Note Priority, Env 1 inverting, VCF/VCA dynamics, and VCF Envelope Multi-trigger."

The MIDIMini as you all likely know is Studio Electronics rackmount Minimoog. They originally converted vintage Minimoogs to the MIDIMoog and then followed with their own designed MIDIMini. You can find pics of a MIDIMoog here and an original MIDIMini here.

New MIDIMini Demos by Studio Electronics

Chords, Rings, and Feedback Wars video by StudioElectronics

"It’s all about the gain staging in this discrete beast: processing and managing the relative levels in each step of the V’s audio signal flow to allow for the introduction of desired noise and distortion. Clean is easy.

Feedback (loop), FBK (feedback) Gain, Amp Drive, individual Oscillator levels, and the main Volume all interact and alter one cherished fact after another; the 24dB ladder to heaven is also… everything, except for the burnished bookends, the dualistic dynamism of synthesizer tone: Ringmod and Crossmod. Fans of our ATC know this verity well–enjoy in somewhat better fidelity on our SoundCloud page.

Spoiler Alert! it really starts to get layered and multi dimensional and very satisfying, at around 7:27. Now go back and listen to the whole thing from the beginning.

Treatment:
Just a touch of compression from our vintage dbx 163X during tracking, into the my marvelous DP10 (will never switch), and a spot of verb in the last few seconds—the balance is pristine and massive Midimini V30."

Studio Electronics MidiMini Moog Rack Synthesizer

SN 1297 via this auction

"Studio Electronics MidiMini, essentially a MiniMoog in a rack. The initial runs were called MidiMoogs, the story goes that the name changed when Studio Electronics ran out of original MiniMoogs to convert and started using some cloned components (although there's also an alternate version of the story where the name changed solely for copyright reasons). This machine is in excellent cosmetic shape and has been working fine doing bassline duty in a lightly used, smoke-free home studio, however PLEASE NOTE: it could use a service as the oscillators go very wobbly and unstable when adjusting their settings. I've posted a sound file (http://www.scientitian.com/files/Midimini1.mp3) which just has a normal bass sound at the start and then at 34 secs I open up the filter and start adjusting the footage and waveform settings and you can hear the oscillators going loopy, then settling down again as they're retuned (please ignore the intermittent white noisy helicopter sound in the background, it's not from the Midimini but another synth leaking through the mixer which I didn't notice when doing the recording). This MidiMini was purchased from E-Bay several years ago and although it was advertised as being in perfect working condition the oscillators have had this issue from the get go, oscillator #1 has been the main offender in the past but, in testing the unit yesterday, it now seems to be working fine again." inside a Midi Mini.

Studio Electronics Minimoog Midimini

via this auction

Original Minimoog in a rack.

Update: via Chris in the comments: "The Midimini is not an original Minimoog in a rack-that would be the Midimoog. This is a recreation/ clone of the minimoog by Studio Electronics. Not sure how different they sound tho."

Update via the world of next tuesday: "That was apparently the general idea, the MIDIMoog was SE usually converting your supplied Mini into a MIDI rack, the MIDIMini was a generally a unit they put together but exactly how much original Mini inside will vary. I popped a MIDIMini open and found a clone VCO board but original vintage Moog VCF and VCA/envelope boards. I would think that since Minis can sound different from each other to begin with these units surely vary." See the comments in this post below for more.

MIDIMINI V30 Oscillator Demo

Published on Mar 21, 2020 StudioElectronics

"This demo is an attempt to capture the raw power and fatness of the Studio Electronics Midimini V30- High quality monitors or headphones are recommended. We do recommend hearing it 'in person' if at all possible. However if you can not, and are curious to know what the raw oscillators sound like- This video is for you Starting with a single oscillator, various filter and resonance settings, and envelope settings. As the video progresses the sounds get a little more complex and wild."

Midimini V30: Monosynth Polysynth #2

Published on Mar 21, 2020 StudioElectronics

"A Bass Odyssey was planned (and promised) yet a more salient inspiration was followed. And it was/is good. Built on the same shell of our mid-80s ST. REGIS tune, “You Lover Lost,” this vid features a near punishingly poppin’ bass response to the initial backstage band effect, and then drifts purposefully into organy, multi-tracked lead slides; a dreamy Fm gathering of heavenly, ethereal eternals focus and fire a Quadnic-like pulse, after that haunting “Sound in my Head” patch made the way straight for its duality. Earthy Taurus-like pedal vibrations praise and present reprise tonalities, and wise culminating paraphonic conversations. Revelations ensue.

OK, THAT was fun. In short, the MIDIMINI V30 makes sounds you like—well beyond the typical; the patchpoints, gain-staging, ringmod, triangle wave #1 wrapped around the filter, crossmod, and Boomstar LFO see to that. 🎧 or better per favore.

Studio Electronics Family Herrre

video by StudioElectronics

"Once upon a drum machine, The Brothers St. Regis had to part with their beloved, stock TR-808; before it left the building, Greg St. Regis programmed this beat: "HE is The Rhythm Man, tapping at he backseat..." Several summers passed and it again found favor in their sight, after hundreds of cuts & creases and "Boomstar Brotherhood" #SE80 percussion pieces. Soon Rhodes chords followed the Rhythm-Man's-flow. It is commonly believed bass was next (30+ tracks): driving, testifying, border-defying Midimini V30, in the lead role, with wildly versatile and colorful programmable support from the SE-02. 10 or so passes of Omega 8—essentially MIDI Channel 1/1980’s style—broadened and brightened the Gospel of Chordal Excellence. The Oracle at Ableton/Atlanta spoke a Wayne Shorter spirit into the leads, so the SE-02 and Midimini began stacking up the solo flights, fighting and reuniting like play-cousin nights. Voices from the “Family Herrre” Chorus preached and ascended majestically—though soothingly prosaic at times—inspiring, shaping, begging, cajoling, demanding, elevating and refining the piece to unforeseen coherence and towering heights… feigning silence for moments, only to reanimate through & beyond fragmentation challenges with that magical dialect and love from #thelou

"Consider all that."

Captain’s Log Supplemental 1182021:

Most if not all of the polyphonic detail work (apart from the Waves Morphoder vocoding), not tracing or amplifying the piano track MIDI, rather often clustering around spoken and sung WORD, like a gritty reverent glitter (WORD, arguably entirely too sacrosanct to digitally preserve… to orchestrate, yet now its dope message moves forward and out), was tracked note by Motu's brilliant “Split Notes” feature in #DP10 - Midimini V30 and SE-02 battling again for the muse’s attention/affection.

SN 1635 or 1535.

"Hello here I have a 230v vintage "1989" Studio Electronics MIDIMINI 3 Osc Mono Synth of a beast for sale kept in a well cared for smoke free studio, the SE MIDIMINI is basically a Moog MiniMoog Model D but in a rack format, SE would remove many old vintage Model D parts and put them in their SE racks and include a tone of additional features like more dynamic mods such as VCA, VCF to respond to velocity, after touch pressure and MIDI, as well as using the 3rd Osc for modulation purposes, they also included a extra LFO which the original Model D boards did not have, later SE made clone replicas of the Model D some of these included original Model D boards and replica boards, both however sound amazing to my ear, with the SE synths you get MIDI implementation as well as solid rocking tuning stability, without having to pay the sky rocketing prices and maintenance the original Model D's need and seem to be going for these days."

"This auction is for a vintage Studio Electronics Midimini, it is exactly the same as the Midimoog but the cards were made specifically for the unit rather than taken from a minimoog and put into a rack. The Midimini gives the same great sound as the Midimoog and the Minimoog .It is in fantastic working order. These are rare and very sought after now, as people are trying to get the sound that Moog provided in the 80's to many of the classic albums of the decade like Michael Jackson's 'Thriller'..."

Midimini V30 // Because You're worth It.

video upload by Starsky Carr

"More than a Minimoog. The Midimini V30 is Studio electronic's Minimoog inspired rack mountable synth with a few added extras. They have been modding Minimoogs and building MIDI rack mounted Midiminis for longer than Moog in it's current form (after liquidation in the 80s Moog wasn't around for a while).

The Midimini is sonically the same as a Minimoog, a sonic pallet we are all familiar with, so in this video I concentrate on the places the Minimoog can't tread."

"ABOUT THE STUDIO ELECTRONICS MIDIMINI:

Years ago, Studio Electronics used to have people send them their Minimoog so they could turn it into a rackmounted MIDIMoog - they'd remove the circuit boards and toss the chassis. Great idea at the time I guess, but this definitely reduced the number of intact Minimoogs out there. So finally - maybe because they realized how horribly destructive this was - or maybe because they ran out of victims - or maybe for none of those reasons :) - they decided to faithfully reproduce the circuitry inside the Minimoog rather than destroying more beautiful instruments. They called this the MIDIMini, and that's what you see here. For all practical purposes, this is a beautiful 4 space rackmounted Minimoog with some really really useful improvements over the original Mini. We feel it's better than a Minimoog also because it's newer and therefore generally much more reliable than most neglected vintage Mini's out there that are around 20 years older. Not only does the MIDI MINI fit in a much smaller space and weigh a lot less than the original Mini - It's also got MIDI built in. That's right - no need to fuss with a MIDI to CV convertor and figure out how to hook it up to that crazy S trigger connector thingy. But not only does it have MIDI... it also responds to aftertouch and velocity, pitch bend and modulation wheel. It's also got an extra LFO for vibrato, so you don't have to tie up the 3rd oscillator for this as you would on a stock Mini Moog. AND it's also got oscillator sync, which can be swept by an envelope generator for that Cars distorted guitarish lead sound everyone knows and loves! :) It's also got switchable note priority modes. This unit makes a nice alternative to an original Minimoog due to its improvements, portable package and greater reliability.

They are rare, however, and sell for thousands of dollars typically."

"Perfect condition Midimini. which is basically a SE recreation of the Midimoog, which was a rack mounted Minimoog. This particular midimini has an authentic minimoog filter, it sounds amazing. It also has an authentic minimoog power board. The unit is in 100% working condition, it was serviced by Greg S, Regis from Studio Electronics in June 2010."

"Excellent, 100% analogue clone of the Moog Minimoog Model D with MIDI and an added LFO.

Full working order. Serviced here and supplied with our usual warranty.

This is a great clone. The short version of the story is that after the original Minimoog went out of production Studio Electronics started producing the MidiMoog which contained original Moog boards. When those ran out they produced a further run with boards the built themselves – the MidiMini.

Has the same basic layout as the classic Model D, with a few changes. The easiest way to understand what they’ve done is to read the excellent MidiMoog review from Music Technology Magazine 1989."
