AKAI AX-80 vintage Synthesizer QUICK DEMO, no effects

"Some say the AKAI AX-80 is thin and uninspiring. Well maybe some of the presets are but the synth can be dark and moody and powerful with 3 LFO's

This one has the Tauntek OS which improves the use of the filter in that you don't have to re trigger the keys to hear any changes you make. It still steps a bit but I don't mind this at all


For some reason, these synths seem to get treated pretty badly and abused. Broken membranes, bricks dropped on them and cigarette burns galore. This one was save a few years ago. I have just finished calibrating it, which improved the synth greatly.

This example was purchased on eBay for around £25 in dodgy condition and operation unknown.

Bodges galore and lack of a service schematic make repairing this machine a bit of a nightmare.

I think the bodges are factory fitted as they use the same kind of enameled resistor as the main PCB.

"I look at the inside the unit and installing a replacement 16x1 backlit LCD display. Final job has wires neatly tie wrapped and insulated with shrink wrap.

Backup battery seemed fine, but swapped it out anyway as a precaution.

I used some autosol metal polish to clean up the LCD display cover and case.

What does it do?
It outputs standard 24PPQN and start/stop signals. Has MIDI IN, OUT and DINSYNC OUT
Also pads for 1,2,4,8 and 48 PPQN (used on some old Korg drum machines)

How is it powered?
Comes with 2.1 to USB lead included to power from USB source (0.75m L)
Can also use pretty much any 5-7v DC 'wallwart' type power transformer. With a 2.1 mm female plug. Positive on the Tip of the plug.
Please note...There is no power adapter supplied as standard with this unit.

I built the PCB into my own case and designed panels. It also has a sequencer included. I was going to add a RAT distortion and space echo but basically ran out of internal space."
