Modal Electronics Introduces the SKULPTsynth SE

"New Modal SKULPTsynth SE announced

– 4-voice portable virtual-analogue synthesiser with MPE support for creative music production anywhere –

Bristol, UK • 20th May 2021 Modal Electronics, a leading global synthesiser manufacturer, is proud to release SKULPTsynth SE. Based on the heritage of the original SKUPTsynthesiser, it inherits a slim form factor, but comes with traditionally coloured, black and white touch keypads, easier to read front panel descriptors and improved built quality.

Equipped with 127 high energising patches, SKULPT SE provides a wide range of highly sought-after sounds for modern music productions and live performances. With its light-weight design, a massive synth engine and MPE support plus patch and polychain compatibility with its predecessor, SKULPTsynth SE is a comprehensive synthesiser for musicians and producers to get creative anywhere they want.

Two WAVE groups per voice with four oscillators each allow to craft carefully flavourful sonic fundaments and sweep smoothly between multiple waveforms. Additional oscillator modulation unveils an unmatched potential for sound customisation. SKULPT SE’s state-variable 2-pole filters morph from low pass through to bandpass and through to high pass. With its resonance feature, it picks out rich harmonics at high resonance levels. Three envelopes give excessive control of the dynamics and expression. Two LFOs, one global and one polyphonic, can be synced to internal or external tempo. The integrated delay and distortion effects give more options to polish the sound.

SKULPT SE supports MPE and offers musicians creative new musical ways to perform with synthesiser sounds, and therefore, SKULPT SE the most affordable MPE hardware synthesiser available today. The integrated real-time sequencer and arpeggiator are acclaimed performance features and invite to immersive jam sessions. Up to 4 SKULPT or SKULPT SE can be poly-chained to form a massive 16-voice virtual-analogue sound engine.

With 127 brand-new patches, SKULPT SE offers a vast library of contemporary sounds that uplift every track. Fully backward compatible, SKULPT SE users can load any patch from the original SKULPT available from Modal’s website and 3rd party sound designers. Using the free MODALapp, available from our website, sound editing and sound management is easy and straightforward. MODALapp runs on all major computer and mobile platforms and offers integration in AU and VST3 DAW environments, respectively.

SKULPTsynth SE will be available by mid May 2021 through a wide network of authorised Modal retailers around the world. Suggested retail prices are £169.99 (UK, incl. VAT), 199.99 € (incl. 20% VAT) and $199.99 (US excl. VAT)."

Modal SKULPT Firmware 2.0 Now Available

via Modal Electronics

– With new features and improvements, SKULPT is now more attractive for today’s sound designers and musicians, new MODALapp version available as well –

Bristol, UK – 7th July 2020 Modal Electronics, one of the leading synthesiser manufacturers, is proudly releasing Firmware 2.0 for its SKULPTsynthesisers to its users. With significant new functions and many improvements, Firmware 2.0 offers more sonic and functional versatility for creative musicians and sound designers alike. At the same time, a new release of the free MODALapp 2.5.0 becomes available for all supporting platforms, including macOS, Windows, iOS, iPadOS and Android, while the MODALapp plugin for AU and VST3 compatible DAWs was undergoing a refreshment, too.

With the newly introduced MPE support SKULPT is compatible with MPE controllers. With MPE, every played note can be articulated individually and allows a more expressive performance. Because each MIDI note is assigned to its unique MIDI channel, every MIDI note can receive dedicated MIDI Channel-Expression commands. This feature delivers creative, next-level performance opportunities. SKULPT is now the most affordable MPE polyphonic hardware synth available on the market.

SKULPT’s integrated Arpeggiator offers the new mighty Sustain/Arp Latch Mode to expand the performance versatility. This function works like a classic arp hold that can also be used when the arpeggiator isn’t engaged.

The new Global Tune Setting ensures better integration of SKULPT into mixed setups with other, less accommodating equipment in studio and live applications, like analogue synthesisers or DJ turntables, which tend to be less precise in tuning.

Finally, a new global setting enables a MIDI-In Offset, that simplifies the integration of Skulpt as a desktop module with other synths. MIDI-In Offset allows the configuration of the correct pitch playing range of each individual patch without having to adjust the octave settings of the external controller.

SKULPTsynthesiser is available through selected retailers worldwide. To install the firmware upgrade, the free MODALapp, Modal’s universal editor and sound managing app is required.

"Modal Electronics Skulpt has proven to be quite a popular little digital desktop synth. With four voices, each with two oscillators that can be up to four spread each (total 32 Oscillators across 4 voices) a morphing 2 pole digital filer, three envelopes, three LFOs and Delay and a distortion.

It was actually launched successfully by 300% on Kickstarter, and now due to manufacturer scale is available as the Skulpt SE which is priced at £169 (original price £269) an impressive price reduction."

Model Electronics SKULPT Synthesiser Livestream Overview

Premiered 48 minutes ago Matthew Hodson

"This is a quick run down of the NEW #SKULPT #synthesiser by #Modal #Electronics. Here I give an overview and a run down of the main features while trying out some of the built in presets. This is a livestream so this is unedited, so apologies for any quirks or rambling 😁

🎼 The track I composed using only this synth can be heard here:"

"UK based artist and synth enthusiast Matthew Hodson was one of the first to get his hands on a prototype of the Modal SKULPT synthesiser. He produced this banging demo track showcasing some of the sonic capabilities our new portable polyphonic synth can dish out.

One half of the Knighstown outfit, Matthew is a busy performer and music producer who has worked in some of the best studios up and down of the UK. Just signed to the legendary FatCat Records, his future sonic excursions will see Matthew produce his own brand of psychedelic techno characterised for his controlled fusion of both ambient and aggressive electronica. His latest album ‘DETACH’ builds on layers of rhythms and melody, drenched in arrhythmic delays and swashes of reverb, which masterfully play with song structure, provoking the listener with familiarity and yet disconnection - is out now via his own label Solitude. Recent performances by Hodson include opening for Wire, supporting the likes of Alex Banks (Monkeytown Records), Ulrich Schnauss, Rival Consoles (Erased Tapes) and also working with the original BBC Radiophonic Workshop on their new material at Peter Gabriel’s Realworld studios.
