Ace Tone Rhythm Ace with MIDI

YouTube via rolandsh1000

"This is a short demo of an Ace Tone Rhythm Ace Drum Machine to which I added MIDI trigger capability.

It's being triggered by an Oberheim DX'a' (the 'a' was the last DX model made by Oberheim and featured stock MIDI), running a few simple patterns.

The Rhythm Ace has about 9-10 drum sounds, most of them are made using resonant transistor oscillator circuits - all the transistors are Germanium - with inductors. There are no IC's anywhere within the Rhythm Ace (well, now there is with the MIDI board). Ace Tone ultimately became Roland, and while the classic TR-808 typically uses a different type of drum oscillator circuit, it's interesting to me that the Rhythm Ace seems to have a Roland quality to the sound.

The MIDI board is made by Highly Liquid and is actually intended for use in the Atari 2600. I added some interface circuitry that inverts and creates brief decaying-exponential triggers from the pulses of the Highly Liquid board.

One limitation here is that the Ace Tone COULD respond dynamically to the triggers, as the sound varies depending upon the shape and size of the trigger pulse. I didn't optimize for that, and that's pretty much why you don't here any open hats or low congas. And you CAN get the bass to boom a la 808 by tweaking a trimpot in the Rhythm Ace, but I held it back a bit here.

I do apologize for the lack of bass here - it's due to the lousy mic on my video camera. Someday I'll get my act together and record these videos with a mixed line-in to the camera."

Vintage Drum Machine Demos & Book - RHYTHM MACHINES The Rise and Fall of the Presets

video upload by Momtnz

"RHYTHM MACHINES - The Rise And Fall Of the Presets - by Alex Graham

Rhythm machines – the precursor to what we in the modern age refer to as a drum machine. This book documents the emergence of the preset pattern electronic rhythm instruments that (for a time) were used as a viable alternative to the drummer. Contained within are the Rhythmates, Rhythm Aces, Rhythm Boxes, Rhythmers, Rhythm Kings, Rhythm Masters, Donca Matics, Mini Pops and many more. Nearly three hundred rhythm instruments are documented here, with over two hundred pictures and information provided on their country of origin, instrument sounds, patterns and features. The book is a ‘must have’ for collectors, vintage instrument enthusiasts and recording artists.

For information on purchasing this unique book, follow the links here:

"1972 ACE-TONE FR-7L Rhythm Ace Vintage Analog Drum Machine Roland TR-77 CR-78

Has scratch on front of folding music stand on top but works and sounds great (see video)!

I'm not sure when this model came out. It's nearly identical (in layout and sound) to the Roland Rhythm 77 (TR-77) which came out in 1972. But it adds a few extra patterns and several sounds heard on the Roland CR-78 years later. It also features cancel buttons very similar to the CR-78.

The Ace Ton Rhythm Ace FR-7L features:

33 rhythm patterns which can be combined by pressing multiple buttons simultaneuosly to get more personalized patterns
Cancel buttons for cymbal, guiro, snare and bass drum - one cap is missing but switch works fine
Cymbal/bass drum balance knob
Pedal start/stop trigger input on back
High and low outputs"

Which Rhythm Ace started it all?

Update: The Korg Donca Matic DA-20 circa 1963, predates the Rhythm Ace by a year. Thanks 100M for pointing out the Donca Matic in the comments for this post. : )

I was reading about the history of Rebirth at http://www.rebirthmuseum.com. They have a good piece starting with Mr. Ikutaro Kakehashi. In 1964 he presented the Ace Electronics Rhythm Ace at his first US tradeshow. Was this the first groove box? : ) Soon after he formed Roland Corporation, and was directly responsible for the Roland TB303, TR808, and TR909.

I found some shots of the Rhythm Ace on Audio Playground's Synth Museum. Two are pictured below. Anyone know which was the first model and which was presented by Mr. Ikutaro Kakehashi all those years ago?

You can find them on Reverb here.

Don't miss the video here.

Update: some pics and details captured. I made the mistake of trying to capture them all and then realized how many were listed. :) I ended up switching to the more esoteric models. Quite a few have never been featured here on MATRIXSYNTH before. What's a little bit interesting, is only two new labels were needed, one for Domino and one for Side-Kick-Er. All other brands have been featured before. See the labels at the bottom of this post. Side note: Blogger limits the number of characters to 200 for labels, so I wasn't able to capture them all for this post. You can always search for the brand names featured for more. I assume most do this anyway. The labels are more for maintenance and for finding posts that may not feature brand names in descriptions.

MULTIVOX RHYTHM ACE FR-3 | Vintage Rhythm Box 1979 | HD Demo

YouTube Published on Jun 3, 2012 by AnalogAudio1

"(c) 2012 by AnalogAudio1

This is a quite rare little analog rhythm box from 1979. The features are nothing special, but the sound overall is much better than other rhythm boxes of that era. It has a deep bassdrum and a crispy snare.

It's from MULTIVOX, not ACE Electronics (former Roland). Before the Multivox came along, Ace Electronics made several rhythm boxes which are also called "Rhythm Ace". These have nothing to do with the Multivox. The mechanical hardware looks to me like old Korg Minipops units. Was Korg involved? ;-)

All rhythms are combinable. I played the Multivox with a little reverb."
