Oberheim TEO-5 INHALT Synth Demo

video upload by INHALTVIDEO

"Following up from my work on the beta development and sound design on the Oberheim OB-X8, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the next Oberheim synth would be the TEO-5. Unpacking the beta unit revealed a beautiful and cleverly designed 5 voice analog synth that simply sounds amazing.

The size of the TEO-5 is absolutely perfect for world wide gigging and the sound is a sort of best of Oberheim with a modern twist. That modern twist doesn't exclusively come from the excellent FX processor on board, but also from the interesting modulation options and ranges. While you can push the synth into harmonic and saturated zones, it still, like all Oberheims remains one large sweet spot.

Don't be fooled by the smaller size and voice count, there is nothing small about the sound and capability of the TEO-5. Not to be missed.

Please note this recording is of a beta development unit running an early firmware. The sounds featured here are the patches I made for the shipping factory bank that comes with the synth straight from Oberheim.

Recorded at Infinite Power Studios, Los Angeles. All patches by Matia Simovich/INHALT. Video edited by Grover Greenberg."

SUPERBOOTH 2024: Oberheim - TEO-5

video upload by sonicstate

"At Superbooth 2024 we met up with David Gibbons from Oberheim who introduced us to the new TEO-5 synthesizer. Named after Tom Oberheim with an exclusive reveal of Tom's middle name, the TEO-5 has a SEM filter, two oscillators and a sub giving that classic Oberheim sound, but with lots of features to bring its capabilities right up to date.

Chris Calcutt then stepped up, and gave us a demo of the sound of this synth. TEO-5 gives us 19 mod slots with tons of destinations, both a mono and a poly LFO, two envelopes and a capable twin FX section. Uniquely there is a cross-mod section with thru-zero capabilities, which allows FM modulation that stays in tune up and down the keyboard.

With a similar form factor to the Take 5, the TEO-5 has a 3 and a half octave Fatar keyboard with aftertouch, and is designed to give the Oberheim sound in a more portable and affordable package

TEO-5 Available: July 2024. Price: 1,499 USD

"A Quick Look any the new Oberheim TEO-5 - named after Tom Edison Oberheim - there was a leak a few weeks back but it's here in the flesh.. and nice it is too.

Its got the same form factor as there Sequential Take 5. The big addition is obviously the Oberheim filter, and a through zero FM - so it looks like it has the new SSI chip.

Anyway.. just a Quick Look.. enjoy:)"

Introducing the New Oberheim TEO-5 Polyphonic Synthesizer

TEO-5: The Legendary Oberheim Sound Reborn in a Compact Powerhouse

San Francisco, CA – [May 16, 2024] – Oberheim, the venerable brand synonymous with the golden age of synthesizers, proudly announces the TEO-5 polysynth. This powerful instrument features the visionary craftsmanship of Thomas Elroy Oberheim (TEO), offering a perfect blend of classic analog warmth and modern versatility for today's musicians.

“I’m so proud to be able to make a synth like this... compact and affordable, the Oberheim sound for 2024,” says Tom Oberheim, the company’s founder. TEO-5 is designed to make the classic Oberheim tone palette widely accessible, encapsulating decades of analog engineering experience in a forward-thinking and innovative musical instrument.

The TEO-5 boasts a five-voice architecture with genuine analog VCOs and VCFs, capturing the distinctive warmth and depth that defined countless hit records. But TEO-5 isn't just a tribute to the past. Additions like through-zero FM, which adds a contemporary twist to its oscillator X-Mod feature, allow for the exploration of entirely new sonic textures. And the legendary Oberheim SEM filter returns, offering the versatility of morphing between low- pass, notch, and high-pass configurations, along with a switchable band-pass mode for extensive tonal shaping.
Beyond its core synthesis architecture, TEO-5 features a comprehensive modulation matrix, opening a world of possibilities for sculpting and transforming sounds. Digital effects processors provide classic chorus, delay, reverb, and more, alongside faithful recreations of the revered Oberheim Ring Mod and Phasor effects. A 64-step polyphonic sequencer and multimode arpeggiator further fuel creative exploration, while a premium Fatar keybed ensures a responsive and inspiring playing experience.

“There was a huge surge of interest when Oberheim returned in 2022 with the historically inspired OB-X8,” said David Gibbons, CEO of Oberheim. “But Tom and the design team were keen to show that the magic of Oberheim can be within reach for everyone, and can bring a distinctive modern flavor. TEO-5 is an exciting addition to the Oberheim legacy.”
Whether you're a seasoned professional seeking a powerful new sonic tool or a budding artist embarking on your analog adventure, TEO-5 is your gateway to unparalleled musical exploration.

Stranger Things main theme: how to sound design the main arp sound with the OB-6

video upload by EthanJamesMusic

EthanJamesMusic OB-6 videos

"This sound design tutorial will teach you how to approach the main theme of Stanger Things. The sound is a simple combination of a pulse wave with a sub oscillator to create the arpeggio.

The Sequential Circuits OB-6 can do a respectable job of coming close to the sound, because of the SEM filter that is borrowed from the original Oberheim that was used in the main theme.

Analog synthesizers have found a way back into film music, which has led to a lot of rich experimentation of what these instruments are capable of. I think my main takeaway is the heavy use of envelope, and setting the filter modulation much lower than a normal synth pluck would require. Also, having a really dry sound mixed in with lots of ambience really cuts through in a way that creates a strong effect.

I hope you learn something from this tutorial, and it gives you some ideas to try out! Please let me know if there are any questions, or if anyone knows what instrument was used on the film. I would guess a Minimoog or similar."

Stranger Things Theme: OB-6 sound design tutorial: How to make the synth bass

video upload by EthanJamesMusic

"This is a sound design tutorial for how to approach the main theme of Stanger Things. The sound is a dirty chorus synth bass that is achieved by detuning the oscillators, as opposed to using a chorus effect..

Bagài and 411: Two new Frap Tools modules!

video upload by Frap Tools

"We'll showcase two new modules this week at Superbooth 2024. Bagài is an analog S&H/bitcrusher/downsampler/random voltage and clock. 411 is a quadruple linear VCA, mixer, and multiple for audio and CV. They are ready and we'll ship them to our resellers next week as we'll be back!" 00:00 Introduction

01:32 Clock bursts
01:51 Fluctuating random voltages

04:23 -6 dB switches
04:36 Outro

BAGÀI
Multipurpose Thingamabob

bagài / baˈgaːi / s.m. [modenese dialect, from a late Latin bagagium ‘baggage’, formed after the late Latin baga, deriving presumably from the Anglo-Saxon bag (see ancient French bague, Provençal bàgua, ‘bundle’), whose root may be traced down to the Indo-European *pac, ‘to tie,’ from which also ‘package,’ ‘pact’] – ‘thing,’ ‘thingamabob.’ A term used when the actual name of a thing or a person does not come to mind.

A module that is at the same time a clock burst, S&H, audio bitcrush, or fluctuating random voltage generator is indeed a bit elusive to describe in a single word. Even if one tries, some aspects will always be missing.

Why bother, then? Let us just call it “that thingamabob,” or better, “that bagài.”

The 411 is a quadruple linear VCA, mixer, and multiple for audio and CV.

It consists of four linear VCAs with semi-normalled inputs and CV inputs, −6 dB attenuation switches, a mixed output, and an unpatched output.

The 411’s architecture allows to use it in many ways, for example:
processing four signals independently;
modulating one signal with four CVS and sending it to four different destinations;
mixing up to four signals and modulating them with the same CV;
mixing two audio signals and modulating them with a modulated CV…

Recently professionally serviced as needed, including installing new upgraded screen which is super easy to read, very bright and legible from all angles (looks even better in person, the pictures don’t do it justice), replaced data slider with a new metal shaft slider and cap (more sturdy than the original) and replaced caps in PSU, voice board, and output board. The battery tests good.

"This is a beautiful P5 rev3.3 with full midi and expanded patch memory. I had this serviced about 2 years ago by Greg Montalbano in the bay area of California. This synth sounds as good as it looks and works perfectly. The only cosmetic flaws are very minimal and circled in red in the photos. The first flaw is 2 little indentions is the wood on the rear top right corner. The second cosmetic flaw is the badge on the front left is starting to delaminate. I don’t know if it’s just a protective film that peels off or what, I never wanted to find out haha. As far as audio you can find a track I made using this P5 for every sound except the field recordings of birds on SoundCloud by searching ‘Rallycars and Dinosaurs’ the song name is ‘August’."

Sound design tutorial from Stranger Things Eleven using OB-6 part 2

video upload by EthanJamesMusic

EthanJamesMusic OB-6 videos

"This is a sound design tutorial for how to approach a specific sound that was used in the first season of Stranger Things. I was requested to show how I would make the chord sound that happens in the track "Eleven". The sound is a wobbly synth sound, with some wrinkles about modulated the filter.

The Sequential Circuits OB-6 can do a respectable job of coming close to the sound. This track has polyphony, so a multi-oscillator synth with separate envelopes is required.

Analog synthesizers have found a way back into film music, which has led to a lot of rich experimentation of what these instruments are capable of. I think my main takeaway is the heavy use of filter modulation using an LFO assignment. Also, having a really dry sound mixed in with lots of ambience really cuts through in a way that creates a strong effect."

Yamaha RS7000 as a pseudo-vintage lo-fi sampler synthesizer (sampling the Prophet 10)

video upload by MIDERA

"One thing I love about the Ensoniq EPS and Mirage is how lo-fi they can sound when you sample them at low sample rates (in the case of the Mirage, when you increase the amount of sample time, which I believe lowers the sample rate). It sounds so dirty.

Well - I think the RS7000 can do that too. You can sample it with a sample rate of 5 khz. You also have lo-fi effects (Master FX and regular FX)... and this is what you get (or rather, what I got).

Honestly, I was playing it against the EPS and I enjoyed using the RS more and thought it sounded just as good. What it does lack is synthesized loops and crossfading between two samples... which is a bit of a pity.

Sample came from Sequential Prophet 10
Added Eventide Blackhole VST for reverb"

Sound design tutorial from Stranger Things Eleven using OB-6 and Moog Grandmother

video upload by EthanJamesMusic

"This is a sound design tutorial for how to approach a specific sound that was used in the first season of Stranger Things. I was requested to show how I would make the lead sound that happens in the track "Eleven". The sound is a wet electric piano type of sound, with some wrinkles around the use of filter modulation and reverb..

The Sequential Circuits OB-6 can do a respectable job of coming close to the sound, and I tried to get a Grandmother version to come close. This track does require polyphony, so the Grandmother would have to be multitracked to get the same result.

Analog synthesizers have found a way back into film music, which has led to a lot of rich experimentation of what these instruments are capable of. I think my main takeaway is the heavy use of envelope, and setting the filter modulation much lower than a normal synth pluck would require. Also, having a really dry sound mixed in with lots of ambience really cuts through in a way that creates a strong effect."

Keyboard Jun '84 | Turmoil in MIDI land, and isn't pretty

video upload by Espen Kraft

"Not everyone was happy with how MIDI came by and what it became. Many well known people (today) were pretty harsh with how Sequential and the 4 Japanese companies set the standards. The nay-sayers were quite moronic though. They had their chance to be part of the gang, but they bottled it for themselves.
Back in 1983 the MIDI spec page was 10 pages long, but it expanded rapidly. As it was "open source", every manufacturer could implement it as they saw fit and that caused all kinds of problems.

New tech and techniques have always polarized opinion and most people fear new things. Today the rise of AI is such a thing. Some people go bat shit crazy over it, while other's embrace it. Some just ignores it as well. No right or wrong. It all depends on where you're at I guess."
