Supersaw with DPO & modDemix from Shared System

Published on May 20, 2015 MAKEN0ISE

"Using the modDemix we can turn the Final out of the DPO VCOB into a sawtooth wave by inverting it at audio-rate with the Square wave. Mixing it with the VCOA sawtooth results in something like a classic "supersaw", a great source for resonant filtering with the MMG.

Roland sh201 patch creation part1

Published on Oct 1, 2016 synth-love

"An exploration of the Roland sh-201 synthesizer. Includes the sh201 supersaw.

Various thoughts on the sh-201 (especially vs the jp 8000)

Short version, if you can get a JP-8000 there is little reason to buy the sh-201. However, the sh-201 is a great synth and not as crippled as it may appear. Nearly all parameters are accessible from the synth via various key combinations.

The sound is different with the sh-201 being a bit more raw to my ears. The JP-8000 sounds smoother. The sh-201 has a lot of aliasing on high notes. It did not show up in normal use but interesting for testing purposes. If I had to guess I would think that perhaps the sh-201 has parts of the audio path and/or dsp that are cheaper than the jp-8000. This gives bad sound in the high notes but actually makes the mid-range sound very nice and raw.

The envelopes seems tuned a bit strange - hard to get the right feel and seems to be a bit of dead space on the filter env amount slider.

It is very hard to come to a judgement on the sh-201 supersaw vs. the jp-8000. I have recorded some video to address this in particular.

The sh-201 distortion/overdrive is very useful but not like the jp8080 distortion. The jp8080 rack distortion is much more flexible. The jp8000 has no distortion at all.

The reverb is nice but I would take the JP-8000 chorus + delay over it. I feel I could get similar reverb elsewhere. The JP-8000 delay and chorus are special. The sh-201 delay can be made to give chorus and it does widen the sound nicely.

It is easy to double the patch memory by programming separate sounds for the upper and lower tone. I was not aware of an easy way on the sh-201 to make arbitrary pairings for splits and layers though.

The synth is very light. Construction seems ok - mine had an issue where the mod lever would activate itself and could only be fixed by a reboot. I only had the synth for a few weeks and did not attempt to fix it.

Also of note, the random and sample and hold LFO's are nice but slower than the JP-8000. I could not achieve a nice noise-lfo type sound with the fastest modulation."

Arduino bass synth superwave (fake supersaw)

YouTube via neutron7 — June 02, 2010 — "Just a quick demo of how the unison and second oscillator part can do a fake "supersaw" type thing.

This demo only uses one of the oscillator pairs, and hardly any of the other controls. everything has been left "wide open" to make the scope trace clearer."

"The FM-3 has the classic shimmering FM sound. 3 Operators with 4 algorithms to choose from.

Feedback on each operator turns this into one beast of a noise machine!"

"The Phoenix Synth emulates another often sought after sound… the SuperSaw.

Along with the famous SuperSaw oscillator, there is a combo Low Pass / High Pass resonant filter. Extreme filter sweeps!"

I'm guessing these will be added to Rhythm Studio which is currently on sale for only .99 through the 31st for the holidays.

Noise Engineering Releases Three Free Plugins

You can find demos in previous posts here.

via Noise Engineering

The beta is over! Noise Engineering moves to full release of three free powerful plugins

Los Angeles, CA — Noise Engineering is happy to announce the end of the public beta and move to full release of three free plugins: synths Sinc Vereor and Virt Vereor and distortion Ruina.

Asked why the move from Eurorack to software, the Noise Engineering team said that it was inspired by several things: first, they’d been bombarded with requests for plugins from modular synth users who love the sound but needed portability or repeatability. They were also extremely aware of the barrier to entry to a modular system and really wanted to make their products more widely accessible (which is partly why this release is free, and will remain free). Finally, they have no plans to stop making modules, but a core value for this small team of six self-described nerds is to keep challenging themselves to learn new things, and making plugins fit the bill. They anticipate further plugin releases based on Eurorack favorites (including a VST3/AU release of their currently AAX-only bundle) coming soon.

Sinc Vereor is an intuitive and powerful synthesizer loosely based on Noise Engineering’s beloved Eurorack module Sinc Iter. Sinc Vereor’s wavemorphing/wavefolding Tone control makes sound design a breeze. Blend between familiar waveforms like saw, triangle, and square. Super mode adds 6 phase-offset oscillators. Use Noise mode to generate self-similar noise for percussion, effects, and more.

Virt Vereor is a powerful synthesizer based on a unique set of synthesis algorithms. Bass is a quadrature algorithm described in Bernie Hutchins’ seminal series Electronotes. Sawx is a supersaw-inspired beast. Harm is an additive algorithm with spectral control and distortion of partials. Virt Vereor makes a tremendous amount of unique sounds with an immediate and usable interface.

Some readers will recognize the names of these algorithms, and indeed they come from Noise Engineering’s contribution to Arturia’s Microfreak V3 firmware and the upcoming Virt Iter module.

Both the Sinc and Virt oscillators are paired with Vereor, Noise Engineering’s easily manipulated dynamics section using an ADSR envelope controlling a variable slope and analog-inspired multimode gate/filter. Add to that a vintage-inspired chorus and a over 1000 presets each, and these synths have something for everyone: bridge the gap between traditional subtractive sounds and modern synthesis techniques, or design innovative basses, leads, or whatever your project calls for.

Ruina is a creative stereo distortion plugin built on digital distortion algorithms: no emulations here. Intuitive and fully automatable controls make it easy to get a gentle, nuanced color, to obliviate a signal, or to dial in anything in between. Don’t feel like tweaking the parameters? Ruina comes with over 500 presets to fit any need, a Random button to generate new sounds, and a Nudge option to just give the parameters the tiniest bump.
Ruina has a wavefolder, a multiband saturator, a chaotic suboctave generator, octavizer, and phase shifter. It also features a notch or bandpass filter with adjustable tracking, and a control to set the order of the distortions in the signal flow to further customize your sound. Last but not least, Overdrive adds up to 128x gain for maximal destruction.

Run any sound through Ruina for warm, lush distortion, or crank the sliders to unleash complete ruin. With seven distortion types, it’s easy to turn your sounds into something singular with Ruina.

All three plugins are free to download: just make an account at the Noise Engineering Customer Portal (https://portal.noiseengineering.us/) and download the installer from the Plugins tab. And while they will remain free, the NE team has big plans to keep developing these. They have a substantial roadmap for future features, some of which were suggestions from the beta users, including introducing extensive internal modulation, more advanced randomization, MIDI learn, MPE support, and more.

Notable features:
• AAX, AU, VST3
• 64-bit Intel + M1
• Mac and Windows
• Intuitive interfaces to easily and quickly manipulate sound
• Use the Random button to generate new patches in one click
• Easy to automate, user-friendly controls. No prior synthesis experience needed, but
synth enthusiasts will also be inspired by the simple-yet-powerful interface
• Fully MIDI-mappable
• Tons of presets included
• Three unique synthesis algorithms inspired by little-known synthesis techniques
(quadrature, supersaw beast, and additive)
• Huge number of distortion possibilities with wavefolding, octavizing, multiband
saturation, suboctave generation, phase shifting, and overdrive

The Synthesis Technology E340 is a super-saw/sine oscillator capable of generating up to 8 waveforms per output. If you want massive bass and lead voices like the JP-8000 supersaw, or thick ambient drones as if played from a slow rotary speaker, the E340 is the perfect audio source for your synth patches.

Detune the swarm of oscillators using SPREAD or with randomly filtered noise using CHAOS and CHAOS BW (bandwidth). Reset the phase of all waveforms using the SYNC trigger input, which can use another oscillator to produce a sync-lead sound.

This module supports VCV Rack’s polyphonic cables, so with 16 voices, you can generate a total of 128 waveforms per output.

This VCV Rack software module uses the original firmware from the hardware Synthesis Technology E340 module.

Synthesis Technology E340 Cloud Generator

"The synthesis technology e340 contains 8 sine and sawtooth vcos with unique modulation capabilities. the term 'cloud oscillator' was first used by ambient musician robert rich when he was recording his 'bestiary' cd. he wanted to define a new type of "buzzing, swarming cloud of sine waves" and after some experimentation, was able to create such a timbre using 24 individual motm modules. now, 8 years later, the technology is available to have this new range of sounds in a 14hp wide euro module.

In its basic form, the e340 is a 2-output, wavetable vco that is generating 16 waveforms at once. modular users quickly discover that in order to get the large, fat notes multiple oscillators are needed that are slightly detuned. this can get expensive quickly, and then you have to deal with the tracking differences, additional mults for the cables and mixers for the outputs. the e340 combines all of these, eliminates the tracking errors and adds the added dimension of being able to control just how "buzzy" the cloud can go. if spread and chaos are set to '0', the e340 behaves like a standard analog vco, but with a very pure sinewave output (less than 0.3% thd) and a standard sawtooth wave.

Simple detuning can sound really good, but the e340 adds 2 controls never seen on any modular: chaos and chaos bandwidth (bw). once you set the degree of detuning using the spread control, you can then add 'animation' to the detuning by dialing in chaos. the chaos randomly 'wiggles' every vco's pitch, while the chaos bw controls the 'speed of the wiggle'. this adds the "swarming of bees" effect at the extreme settings, and in the low settings the subtle pitch changes are similar to a slow-speed leslie effect.

If monster bass lines and sawtooth leads (like the old roland supersaw jp8000 setting) are what you want, the e340 delivers like no other vco. you can select 2, 4 or 8 detuned sawtooths and vary the relative phasing under voltage control. and like the jp8000, the e340 has sync input as well..."

video upload by Friendly Noise

"First introduced in 1997, the Access Virus and all his following variations are without doubt one of the most iconic and used synthesizers in the 21st century. The last versions of the Virus are full of details with a real musical function, like three oscillators, three LFOs, dual multimode filters (+ comb and formant modes), great modulation matrix and effect section, FM, ring modulation, wavetable, Hypersaw (kind of Rolandish-Supersaw)… to name a few features. With that power, the Virus can cover all the basics for different kinds of musical styles. A 16 part multimode and great polyphony can deliver all the sounds you need for whole songs… providing you like the characteristic sound of the Virus. Some love it, some hate it. Was the amazing polyphony achieved at the cost of the high end? The Virus is not the brightest synth in the town, but how much do you care about that?

The sounds are illustrated with pictures of my own Virus. There is no video, because those are old recordings, made long time ago before I started recording videos. The purpose of the recordings was exclusively for personal use, a way to remember sounds I liked. Some of the recordings can be useful today in order to get familiar with the sound of the featured instruments, so I decided to upload them. In fact, no video is an advantage: you can do other things while just listening to the sounds. :-)

All sounds were programmed by myself.

"The Arturia Minibrute is a very handy analogue synth. At the same time it is USB/MIDI-CV/Gate Interface, (all directions as far as I found out). And it is also a CV/Gate-Keyboard which is very rare.
The built quality is so so. Could be better -- especially the pots and knobs also the waveform sliders with a quarter of the way up you obtain 50 percent of the volume the last 25 percent of the way make almost no difference in loudness. But I don't know if there is a cheaper way of assembling and selling this synth.

the mighty M.F. / 130 patches for Arturia Microfreak (vid 2)

video upload by Jexus (sounds-for-synths.com)

"My thoughts on the synth & how to buy: https://sounds-for-synths.com/arturia...

No talking demo. All patches custom-made by Jexus. As you all know the Microfreak is monoaural and has no onboard FX. It sounds slightly different and more “stereo” in my demo because some of the sounds have been EQ-ed, and many of the sounds have a chorus and / or stereo delay & reverb applied (but nothing that would dramatically alter the original timbre of the synth like phasers, flangers, pitch shifters, etc). The wet / dry ratio is usually 20:80 (or 20% mix in other words), reaching 50:50 in a few patches (I used the simplest presets on a Lexicon MX). I wanted to make the sounds nice for the ear but I also wanted show the true sound of this synth without too much embellishment or experimentation.

Here's a short FX dry/wet comparison to give you an idea what the patches sound like without FX:"
