Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world's most hated audio tools. Today we are going to talk about Roland System-8. Is this soon abandoned flagship synthesizer, little sibling of System-1, part of the Roland Aira range, virtual analog synth, Roland Cloud plugout host and overall eye-sore a future classic or just another expensive plastic toy? Is it worthy of the rich Roland Jupiter-8 and Roland Juno-106 legacy?

New Systems Instruments Introduces Triphase Oscillator Eurorack Module

video upload by New Systems Instruments

"A quick overview of the Triphase Oscillator. For more information, check out our website: https://nsinstruments.com/modules/tri... Patch notes below.

The Triphase Oscillator is a Eurorack Module from New Systems Instruments that lets you explore the space of phase interference. It is an oscillator with three independent phases, with modulation, and a bipolar mixer to combine them.

The first / last patch uses two Triphase oscillators. The lower Triphase is taking two outputs panned left and right and one panned center, with different LFOs modulating the left and right phase. This gives it a stereo chorus type of effect. The higher/melody Triphase has an envelope controlling one of the phases, and an LFO controlling the other two. This makes a square notch that is large at the beginning and then becomes smaller, with both the width of the notch and its position relative to the saw changing. End of chain reverb is added. There are no filters, VCAs, or other modules making or modifying sounds.

Most of the other patches should be pretty self-explanatory. They are recorded dry.

The melodic patch is sequenced from a keystep.

The FM patch is doing audio rate FM from the Inertia, which is configured as an oscillator here.

The hard sync patch is synced with an offscreen oscillator, and uses the Inertia as an envelope to control the pitch of the Triphase."

"New Systems Instruments announced today that the Triphase Oscillator is now shipping and available. The Triphase Oscillator gives you three sawtooth waves with independent control over the phase of each wave, combined with a bipolar mixer. This creates a comb filter pattern in the harmonics, emphasizing some harmonics and canceling others.

The Triphase Oscillator works with phase cancellation, combining three waves at different phases and polarities to remove or reinforce regularly spaced harmonics, such as odd harmonics or every third harmonic. With the bipolar mixer, you can control how the waves interact, canceling or reinforcing parts of the spectrum either fully or partially. Applying CV to the phases creates variable-width pulses, subtle detuning effects, and a continuously moving soundscape. Phase cancellation is related to pulse width modulation, but pulse width modulation only has one dimension of control instead of the multiple phases and polarities of the Triphase Oscillator. A closer relative is a chorus effect, which creates frequency-dependent phase differences by delaying a signal.

One way to use the Triphase Oscillator is to mix all three saws at the same polarity, modulating their phases to create a supersaw, similar to mixing multiple detuned sawtooth oscillators. This creates a classic thick analog sound, further enhanced by the internal CP3 type mixer—a discrete transistor mixer that reportedly gave the Moog IIIp modular system a good part of its sound. With the individual outputs, you can also use a full featured stereo mixer and pan the saw waves left, right, and center, giving a stereo supersaw or stereo chorus type of effect.

Apart from its unique phase modulation capabilities, the Triphase Oscillator is a very capable analog oscillator in its own right, giving a tuning accuracy of around 8 octaves and ranging from 1.5Hz–60kHz, well into the sub and supersonic ranges. In addition to volt per octave and CV over phase, it has a hard sync input, and a linear FM input. All the CV runs at audio rate as well, meaning the Triphase Oscillator can produce some interesting FM + phase modulation sounds.

New Systems Instruments is a modular manufacturer located in the San Francisco Bay Area, focusing on creating new analog designs based on different ways of thinking about music and synthesis.

The Triphase Oscillator retails at $385 USD."

'FAT BASS' - Bigger Sound for Synth Bass Lines using the Wave Swarm & Ring SM Eurorack modules

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"Some fat synth bass line sounds using a variation of 2 VCO, Ladder Filter, Wave Swarm for a thick sawtooth pad, and Ring SM for sub basses. Either or both of these 2 modules add a lot of scope to the sound of even a single VCO, even more so with two. Patch notes at the bottom.
The Wave Swarm uses it's 12 waveform animators to create thick, buzzing supersaw style sounds, from either a single saw wave, or from two independent saws, even as part of two completely separate monophonic synth voices, even a two-voice polyphonic patch. Check the links below for User Guide and some patches.
The Ring SM has both a vintage-voiced, fully analogue ring modulator, modelled on the ring mod from the EMS Synthi and VCS3, but it is also a 5-channel Moog CP3 style mixer, capable of soft clipping overdrive/distortion, and most importantly for bass patches - a sub bass/sub-octave generator, needing only a single VCO to generate both -1 and -2 sub octaves simultaneously. All functions can be used together, or on their own. The sub basses are shaped sine waves, which sound thicker and deeper than plain square waves, which are most commonly used by synths as sub basses.

The AJH SYNTH Eurorack range consists of high-end modules, all hand-made in the UK, most of which are based on classic, vintage designs, authentically recreating the circuitry of much sought-after analogue instruments and technologies of the past, whilst greatly expanding them, and bringing them to modern Eurorack levels of convenience, limitless flexibility, and reliability.

Check out the AJH Synth playlists for module 'User Guides', and 'Patch of The Week' videos, which will be either performances or 'how to' guides, detailing functions/methods, and a range of sounds, some familiar, some less so, containing a patch sheet at the end to show you how to construct it for yourself.

Meet us and the modules in person this year at Superbooth 23, Berlin, on May 11th to 13th.

New Elektron Syntakt SY Swarm and SY Raw machines // Syntakt 1.20 upgrade

video upload by Elektron

"New Machines for your machine! We have added, SY Swarm and SY Raw, to the #Syntakt to help you reach new levels of sonic possibilities. With this sweet duo, the OS 1.20 upgrade is focusing on the melodic side of the Syntakt and expanding its already vast sound design capability.

Taking a leaf from the famed supersaw waveform but re-imagining in Elektron-style, the digital Machine, SY Swarm, is all about that sawtooth waveform which gives you seven of them in one mighty swarm. Use it to create everything from a fat lead to an insane buzzing texture

SY Raw puts all the classic analog waveforms at your fingertips in not only one but two oscillators, to be used as building blocks for your musical endeavors. Add a pinch of noise and a spoonful of ring modulation to the mix, and you have everything you need to create everything from low, low bass to cutting leads, and melodic percussion.

The music in this video is created by only using these two new Machines. Go download this new OS here: https://bit.ly/3tU4Bbt"

the mighty M.F. / 130 patches for Arturia Microfreak (vid 2)

video upload by Jexus (sounds-for-synths.com)

"My thoughts on the synth & how to buy: https://sounds-for-synths.com/arturia...

No talking demo. All patches custom-made by Jexus. As you all know the Microfreak is monoaural and has no onboard FX. It sounds slightly different and more “stereo” in my demo because some of the sounds have been EQ-ed, and many of the sounds have a chorus and / or stereo delay & reverb applied (but nothing that would dramatically alter the original timbre of the synth like phasers, flangers, pitch shifters, etc). The wet / dry ratio is usually 20:80 (or 20% mix in other words), reaching 50:50 in a few patches (I used the simplest presets on a Lexicon MX). I wanted to make the sounds nice for the ear but I also wanted show the true sound of this synth without too much embellishment or experimentation.

Here's a short FX dry/wet comparison to give you an idea what the patches sound like without FX:"

Access Virus TI Sounds Part 4 - Self Programmed Sounds - The last sound group from the old batch

video upload by Friendly Noise

"First introduced in 1997, the Access Virus and all his following variations are without doubt one of the most iconic and used synthesizers in the 21st century. The last versions of the Virus are full of details with a real musical function, like three oscillators, three LFOs, dual multimode filters (+ comb and formant modes), great modulation matrix and effect section, FM, ring modulation, wavetable, Hypersaw (kind of Rolandish-Supersaw)… to name a few features. With that power, the Virus can cover all the basics for different kinds of musical styles. A 16 part multimode and great polyphony can deliver all the sounds you need for whole songs… providing you like the characteristic sound of the Virus. Some love it, some hate it. Was the amazing polyphony achieved at the cost of the high end? The Virus is not the brightest synth in the town, but how much do you care about that?

The sounds are illustrated with pictures of my own Virus. There is no video, because those are old recordings, made long time ago before I started recording videos. The purpose of the recordings was exclusively for personal use, a way to remember sounds I liked. Some of the recordings can be useful today in order to get familiar with the sound of the featured instruments, so I decided to upload them. Modular Christmas Carols [Steve's MS-22, Twin Waves MkII, Chainsaw, Quadigy, Ensemble Oscillator...]

video upload by Threetom Modular

"PATCH NOTES BELOW! :)

SEASON GREETING TO EVERYONE IN THE MODULAR COMMUNITY FROM THREETOM MODULAR! I HOPE YOU HAVE THE MOST EXCELLENT HOLIDAYS AND I WISH YOU THE BEST FOR THE NEW YEAR! :D

* Voice 1 (Bass): A mix of a triangle wave and a square sub coming from Klavis Twin Waves MkII into Steve's MS-22. Low pass cutoff is modulated by the Klavis Quadigy envelope generator.

* Voice 2 (Lead): A supersaw coming from Klavis Twin Waves MkII going into Steve's MS-22. Low pass cutoff frequency is modulated by the TipTop Z8000 sequencer, asynchronously clocked by the Doepfer A-145-4 quad LFO.

* Voice 3 (Pad): Acidrain Chainsaw into a stereo pair of Steve's MS-22 filters. The Chainsaw's waveshape is slowly modulated by the Doepfer A-145-4 quad LFO.

* Voice 4 (Bells/counterpoint): 4MS Ensemble Oscillator, manually tweaked throughout the sequence.

All voices go through the ZlobVnicursal VCA, into the Befaco Hexmix and Hexpander combo. The Hexpander sends an effects mix into the Happy Nerding FXaid for reverb (which is then mixed back in through the Hexpanders effect return).

This performance was sequenced by Ableton Live and the Endorphin.es Shuttle control (outside of the shot), based on the midi file 'A Christmas Carol Suite' by Richard Ian (you can find it here: http://midkar.com/holidays/christmas/... )"

"Fully analog, fully homemade guitar-synth
Built from scratch, based on a few different schematics aswell as a few own designs for some of the functions.
The pitch is controlled by two soft-pots tuned a 4th apart, just like a guitar.

The body is mostly made of stained plywood and the knobs are made of dowels that i cut and sanded to size!

The synth is accompanied by a couple of beats I made on my digitakt!

Hope you enjoy!"

Noise Engineering Releases Three Free Plugins

You can find demos in previous posts here.

via Noise Engineering

The beta is over! Noise Engineering moves to full release of three free powerful plugins

Los Angeles, CA — Noise Engineering is happy to announce the end of the public beta and move to full release of three free plugins: synths Sinc Vereor and Virt Vereor and distortion Ruina.

Asked why the move from Eurorack to software, the Noise Engineering team said that it was inspired by several things: first, they’d been bombarded with requests for plugins from modular synth users who love the sound but needed portability or repeatability. They were also extremely aware of the barrier to entry to a modular system and really wanted to make their products more widely accessible (which is partly why this release is free, and will remain free). Finally, they have no plans to stop making modules, but a core value for this small team of six self-described nerds is to keep challenging themselves to learn new things, and making plugins fit the bill. They anticipate further plugin releases based on Eurorack favorites (including a VST3/AU release of their currently AAX-only bundle) coming soon.

Sinc Vereor is an intuitive and powerful synthesizer loosely based on Noise Engineering’s beloved Eurorack module Sinc Iter. Sinc Vereor’s wavemorphing/wavefolding Tone control makes sound design a breeze. Blend between familiar waveforms like saw, triangle, and square. Super mode adds 6 phase-offset oscillators. Use Noise mode to generate self-similar noise for percussion, effects, and more.

Virt Vereor is a powerful synthesizer based on a unique set of synthesis algorithms. Bass is a quadrature algorithm described in Bernie Hutchins’ seminal series Electronotes. Sawx is a supersaw-inspired beast. Harm is an additive algorithm with spectral control and distortion of partials. Virt Vereor makes a tremendous amount of unique sounds with an immediate and usable interface.

Some readers will recognize the names of these algorithms, and indeed they come from Noise Engineering’s contribution to Arturia’s Microfreak V3 firmware and the upcoming Virt Iter module.

Both the Sinc and Virt oscillators are paired with Vereor, Noise Engineering’s easily manipulated dynamics section using an ADSR envelope controlling a variable slope and analog-inspired multimode gate/filter. Add to that a vintage-inspired chorus and a over 1000 presets each, and these synths have something for everyone: bridge the gap between traditional subtractive sounds and modern synthesis techniques, or design innovative basses, leads, or whatever your project calls for.

Ruina is a creative stereo distortion plugin built on digital distortion algorithms: no emulations here. Intuitive and fully automatable controls make it easy to get a gentle, nuanced color, to obliviate a signal, or to dial in anything in between. Don’t feel like tweaking the parameters? Ruina comes with over 500 presets to fit any need, a Random button to generate new sounds, and a Nudge option to just give the parameters the tiniest bump.
Ruina has a wavefolder, a multiband saturator, a chaotic suboctave generator, octavizer, and phase shifter. It also features a notch or bandpass filter with adjustable tracking, and a control to set the order of the distortions in the signal flow to further customize your sound. Last but not least, Overdrive adds up to 128x gain for maximal destruction.

Run any sound through Ruina for warm, lush distortion, or crank the sliders to unleash complete ruin. With seven distortion types, it’s easy to turn your sounds into something singular with Ruina.

All three plugins are free to download: just make an account at the Noise Engineering Customer Portal (https://portal.noiseengineering.us/) and download the installer from the Plugins tab. And while they will remain free, the NE team has big plans to keep developing these. They have a substantial roadmap for future features, some of which were suggestions from the beta users, including introducing extensive internal modulation, more advanced randomization, MIDI learn, MPE support, and more.

Notable features:
• AAX, AU, VST3
• 64-bit Intel + M1
• Mac and Windows
• Intuitive interfaces to easily and quickly manipulate sound
• Use the Random button to generate new patches in one click
• Easy to automate, user-friendly controls. No prior synthesis experience needed, but
synth enthusiasts will also be inspired by the simple-yet-powerful interface
• Fully MIDI-mappable
• Tons of presets included
• Three unique synthesis algorithms inspired by little-known synthesis techniques
(quadrature, supersaw beast, and additive)
• Huge number of distortion possibilities with wavefolding, octavizing, multiband
saturation, suboctave generation, phase shifting, and overdrive
