Radikal Technologies DELTA CEP 1.6e Firmware Update

"Radikal Technologies takes DELTA CEP A paraphonic semi-modular synth several steps further forward with free firmware updates

MÜNCHEN, GERMANY: cutting-edge sound specialist Radikal Technologies is proud to announce availability of the latest (Version 1.6e) firmware update for its illustrious DELTA CEP A paraphonic semi-modular synthesizer — serving up nine essential synthesis ‘modules’ melded together to form a potent yet straightforward starting point to the ever-widening world of the Eurorack small-format modular system — that builds upon its impressive feature set with several significant additions, free for existing owners…

Its introduction earlier this year to widespread critical acclaim saw Radikal Technologies’ DELTA CEP A living up to the PARAPHONIC-MODULAR wording boldly blazoned across its feature-packed front panel. Pushing its cutting-edge sound-specialising creator’s product lineup to the forefront of the ever-widening world of the Eurorack small-format modular system, the deftly-designed DELTA CEP A can function as a standalone synthesizer or — when removed from the chassis — a 68HP-occupying Eurorack module forming the centre of a powerful modular voice. Whichever way it is brought into play — purchasable as a desktop paraphonic semi-modular synthesizer or Eurorack paraphonic semi- modular synthesizer module, the DELTA CEP A is the perfect starting point for any modular user.

Today, the DELTA CEP A paraphonic semi-modular synthesizer represents an even more potent force in the ever-widening world of the Eurorack small-format modular system, thanks to extensive firmware updates, culminating in Version 1.6e, that build upon its impressive feature set with several significant additions, as follows.

Firstly, Radikal Technologies has helpfully seen fit to expand the DELTA CEP A’s already powerful FX section above and beyond the giveaway (FX: 1. TAPE 2. DELAY 3. CHORUS 4. PHASER 5. FLANGER) wording highlighted on that feature-packed front panel to additionally include a stereo reverb algorithm. As such, it is now perfectly possible to add stereo reverb to those tape, delay, or chorus effects, for instance. It is also perfectly possible to morph those new reverb parameters as well with the INTERPOLATOR section — certainly separates the DELTA CEP A from the Eurorack pack! Put it this way: with this sound-stimulating section, users are afforded an ability to store so-called ‘snapshots’ of sound creations into the DELTA CEP A’s internal memory; moreover, users can consequently play those snapshots sequentially, creating cool sonic sequences. Saying that, they can cleverly create smooth transitions from one snapshot to another, allowing for some stunning sound morphing effects!

Excitingly, the LFO 1 section can now be assigned to different modulation targets without having to use any patch cables; creatively, this allows for assigning the LFO (Low Frequency Oscillator) modulation to multiple targets simultaneously with independent modulation depths for all targets. That said, the ADSR section’s envelope generator can also now be assigned to different modulation targets without having to use any patch cables; creatively, multiple targets can be simultaneously controlled with independent modulation depths. Deeper still, the INTERPOLATOR section’s already powerful morphing function also benefits from those new routing capabilities since internal routings can be morphed! Musically- and sonically-speaking, users can now explore a whole new dimension of dynamic soundscapes.

So, having installed its latest firmware updates, how do discerning DELTA CEP A users access those welcomed additional parameters? Pressing the SHIFT button locks the SHIFT function to more easily enable additional parameters; its associated LED (Light Emitting Diode) flashes until the SHIFT function is unlocked again (by pressing the SHIFT button again).

Additionally, the MOD input in the MIXER section now controls the volume and saturation of the SWARM OSC signal; speaking of inputs, the SYNC input in the LFO 1 section now performs perfectly and allows for synchronising the LFO to another LFO or the GATE signals. (Holding the SHIFT button allows access to the note values of the LFO with the SPEED knob.)

Needless to say, the DELTA CEP A now reacts to MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) program changes, but be careful; if it receives a program change while the user is editing a sound, any changes to the sound will be lost.

Last, but by no means least, thanks to the latest (Version 1.6e) firmware update, it is now possible to share presets directly between two DELTA CEP A paraphonic semi-modular synthesizers. So what else can Radikal Technologies say? Not much — other than concluding that its illustrious DELTA CEP A has taken several significant steps further forward, courtesy of a rigorous regime of firmware updates. Ultimately, then, the DELTA CEP A ships with the latest firmware, which existing users of course can access and install for free.

The DELTA CEP A is available for purchase — priced at an RRP of €899.00 EUR/$999.00 USD (Eurorack) and €1,198.00 EUR/$1,298.00 USD (desktop) — through Radikal Technologies’ growing global network of authorised dealers.

For more in-depth information and access to the latest firmware updates, please visit the dedicated DELTA CEP A webpage here: https://www.radikaltechnologies.com/delta-cep-a-2/ (Existing DELTA CEP A owners can download the latest firmware updates for free.)

Radikal Technologies RT-311 Swarm Oscillator Official Released

We've seen the demos. We now have the official press release:

[image: "The front panel has all input and output jacks at the lower end of the panel. That keeps the knobs free from cables."]

"Radikal Technologies releases radical Eurorack-compatible oscillator module with a DSP-driven difference

MÜNCHEN, GERMANY: having turned heads, opened ears, and blown musical minds with a successful showcase at The 2017 NAMM Show, January 19-22 in Anaheim, California, high-quality synthesizer developer Radikal Technologies is proud to announce availability of its RT-311 SWARM OSCILLATOR — an advanced DSP-driven Eurorack-compatible oscillator module that, as implied by name, goes far beyond the realms of standard oscillator fare, firstly thanks to two oscillators that can both build swarms of (up to eight) oscillator ‘clones’ capable of being pitched in musical intervals, chords, clusters, or fat detunes, dutifully backed by having all parameter settings saveable as interpolatable snapshots, enabling even more radical results — as of March 28...

A dictionary definition of swarm typically reads: a large number of things... or oscillators, in the case of Radikal Technologies’ radical RT-311 SWARM OSCILLATOR, which, when switched to its highest SWARM setting, sees a maximum of 16 oscillator ‘clones’ running simultaneously. Something that stands out from the sound of the (ever-expanding Eurorack modular) crowd — to (partially) paraphrase the early-Eighties British breakthrough hit from synth-pop pioneers The Human League (themselves no strangers to the small-format modular system popularised by fellow German developers Doepfer Musikelektronik) — and surely something to behold? But building swarms of oscillator clones using both (OSCILLATOR 1 and OSCILLATOR 2) banks’ specialised set of TUNE, OCTAVES, DENSITY, SPREAD, and DETUNE controls to create pitched musical intervals, chords, clusters, or fat detunes does not necessarily mean that all 16 of those clones have to sound simultaneously.

Switched into (its default startup) Manual-Mode of operation, the RT-311 SWARM OSCILLATOR can function much like any other Eurorack-compatible all-analogue oscillator out there with OSCILLATOR 1 and OSCILLATOR 2 respectively appearing at the two (OUT 1 and OUT 2) outputs as sound sources for further manipulation elsewhere — using Radikal Technologies’ own RT-451 DUAL MULTIMODE FILTER module, for instance. In this scenario, the sound of the RT-311 SWARM OSCILLATOR module matches exactly what would be expected from the potentiometer-controlled parameter positions on its 32 HP (Horizontal Pitch) sized front panel; putting yet more controls at adventurous users’ fingertips, both banks of oscillators feature WAVE controls for smooth transitions between waveforms and TLM (Timelinearity Modulation), a variation of pulse-width modulation — known from Radikal Technologies’ SPECTRALIS 2 ANALOG SYNTHESIZER/ BEATMATRIX/FILTERBANK desktop hybrid — that can be applied to all waveforms, while exponential FM (Frequency Modulation) and linear FM modulation or PM (Phase Modulation) are also available alongside oscillator synchronisation. Pitch is, of course, controlled by the (calibrated) 1V/OCT input (which can be quantised so that only pitches of a certain tone sequence or scale are output).

Other operational modes make more radical results really shine through, though. Switching Snapshot-Mode into play permits the RT-311 SWARM OSCILLATOR to store up to eight memory setups, each with eight snapshots, saving all oscillator settings and memorising them even after whatever Eurorack small-format modular synth system is playing host to the module has been powered down! Such snapshots are assigned to one of eight positions accessible via the ‘big knob’ dominating the RT-311 SWARM OSCILLATOR’s front panel. Put it into Interpolator-Mode and everything (literally) revolves around the cyclic traversal of those snapshots, smoothly crossfading from one to the next with transitions taken care of via voltage control, an internal LFO (Low Frequency Oscillator), or the big knob itself — either way, the surrounding eight LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) illuminate accordingly in user-chosen colours, helpfully highlighting which snapshot is playing at any given time.

To make room for an RT-311 SWARM OSCILLATOR in any Eurorack small-format modular system means making more sound colours available to the sophisticated synthesist... Radikal by name, radical by nature, now a swarm of oscillators need not take up too much valuable rack space, so why not add one (or more) modules to your setup today to start putting Radikal Technologies’ latest DSP-driven design through its unique-sounding paces?

Now shipping, the RT-311 SWARM OSCILLATOR is available for purchase from Radikal Technologies stockists at an MSRP of €598.00 EUR (in Europe) and $659.00 USD (in the US).

For more in-depth information, please visit the dedicated RT-311 SWARM OSCILLATOR webpage here."

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year everyone!!!  I hope 2012 treated you well and I wish you the best in 2013!

As I do each year, I thought I'd reflect a little on the past year.  These posts are always difficult to write, and I always wing them, so bear with me.  It's impossible to justify a whole year's worth of synth coverage in a single post.  The following is just a small bit of what comes to mind when looking back.  You'll find a top ten list of posts with the most page views followed by my picks for the year further below.  Apologies if I miss anything, and of course, if you have anything to add, feel free to leave a comment below.  I'm curious what you, the readers of the site, felt stood out in the world of synths this past year.

First, I want to begin this post with a HUGE THANK YOU!!!  If you are reading this it obviously means you have come to this site and some of you have been coming here for years! Thank you for sticking with me. This site is a journey I hope to continue for years to come. Thank you to everyone that has taken the time to showcase their synths, and thank you to those that share what they find! Thank you to those that link to the site and help spread the word on MATRIXSYNTH via Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and your own websites! And of course, THANK YOU to all the sponsors on the right who believe in the site enough to support it!

A nod to previous New Years posts, pictured to the left is the MATRIXSYNTH world domination map. :)  I always think it's worth taking a look at who's watching the site.  Synths are global and you are looking at a map of the readers of MATRIXSYNTH.  Everything you see in green represents a visit from that country.  The darker the green, the higher the number of visits.  This is just for the year, but for the life of the site, we still haven't gotten a single hit from North Korea!   I don't know what they have against synths!  ;)   You'll find the top 10 visits by country further below.

This is the eighth New Year the site has gone through!  The focus for the site this year has been the same as previous years, and I plan to keep it that way.  This site is about showcasing specific synths, not just synths in general, and not just news and press releases.  The focus is on the individual synths that have existed throughout history, the technology behind them, and the lives they lead with their odd owners, myself included.  :)  Yes it is about the gear, their makers, and their players.  It has always been my opinion that synths in general have a tendency to be undervalued. Compared to say collectible guitars, they are often discarded and devalued in favor of next year's model, next year's technology.  It has always been my opinion that every synth has something of value to offer,  something specific and something unique that gives it its character. I built this site to showcase that.  This site is about the history of synths as their history unfolds - videos and images of synths being played and used, by both those that make them and those that play them.  Vintage synths being offered in the second hand market, being exchanged from one sonic explorer to the next. It really is a wondrous thing. Think of the magic synthesizers bring into your world. That is what this site is ultimately about.  Some posts may not seem to make sense now, but they will in time, because they will be a look back in time. A day in the life of a particular synthesizer.  I love analog and I love digital. I love all synths and this site celebrates that.

And now for a little reflection on the year. This year we had a total of 16678 posts including this one.  That comes out to roughly 45.69 posts a day.  Not a single day of the year went without a post.  So what dominated the synth year?  Mobile, modulars and a few dedicated hardware synths.

MATRIXSYNTH NAMM 2016 Pics

MATRIXSYNTH NAMM 2016

Update: Booth list added below.  30 booths in one day!  It's become tradition for me to come on Saturday only.  The site is just too busy leading up to then.  Be sure to see the last image in the set  It's the NAMM Booth promo for the first showing of the original Minimoog Model D.  The Bob Moog Foundation was giving out buttons of the flyer which you can see in the second to last image.  You never know what will be your last pic at NAMM.  I am glad it was this one.  It's more than fitting considering the Minimoog was the birth of modern day synthesizers.  Apologies for not calling this out earlier.  It was one of those should I not say anything and let people pause at that image and discover what it meant on their own, or should I call it out.  I guess I did both.  :)

--

So first of all, apologies for the super tall pic to start! For some reason Flickr's slideshow is not resizing it, and a few others, to fit the desired frame size. Mouse over the image and use the controls that come up to move through the slide show. Once you get past the first image, the majority of the rest should fit fine. For what it's worth, the super tall pic to start does give you a feel of what it's like to walk up to the entrance of NAMM. If you prefer you can check out the set on Flickr here. Feel free to grab any pics for your wallpaper but if you'd like to use them professionally (not that any are that good :), please contact me by clicking on the small email icon on the bottom right of the site. This year I took a total of 328 pics.

All that said, enjoy the set! The pics speak for themselves. If you have any questions or comments feel free to leave them in the comments.

NAMM was great this year. Lots of familiar faces and lots of new. Modular has grown exponentially. It was on the main floor this year rather than what we like to call the dungeon. As for new synths, the DSI Oberheim OB-6 stole the show. The minilogue looked and sounded great and the KORG Volca FM was a very nice surprise. Roland's booth was great; nice dim lighting to let the blinky synth lights shine, as well as giving you a more intimate experience with their synths. There was also a cool wall sized timeline of Roland synths. Malekko's Roland System 500 synths were in show and I actually was able to help with one that had its envelope switched to loop mode. Moog's Island of Electronicus was an incredible space. The pics don't do it justice. It was literally like an oasis in NAMM. Things get pretty hectic and can feel overwhelming at times. Moog's booth just made you smile and relax. Thank you Moog!

PS, there are a couple of non-synth shots in the set that might make you smile. I took them to show my wife what I was looking at. :)

Including this post, 253 NAMM2016 posts have gone up and more are sure to follow.

"I have filmed myself creating a pattern from scratch with the only Raveolution309. You will notice the lack of compression and sometimes PCM's can sound very loud.

That machine is a beauty with a lot of little bugs, you will hear the sequencer stopping/slowing down when I change part, sounds from a part can cut the ones from other parts, many sounds irregularities etc... this machine is alive!!!

I can play like that during days only with that baby, I do not produce good techno but these oldshool sounds remember me the golden age of techno... I miss Quasimidi :("

Quasimidi 309 Rave in a Box

video upload by The Free Radikal

"There are some nice synth pads hidden inside the percussion set of the 309, I spread them across a few notes, panned and tuned them, added Square LFO to the VCA and VCF synced to the clock at 1/4 to give the pumping, side chain effect, recorded some beats and a bassline to make a quick track."
