Uncharted Waters: Advanced Waterphone Performance Sampler

"Welcome to a new and exciting instrument, the Advanced Waterphone Performance Sampler. This instrument for Kontakt 3 and 4 is designed from high quality samples of Richard Waters’ amazing invention, the waterphone.

These samples are rich in microtonality and complex timbres. Our instrument is designed to respond like a waterphone giving you the joy and surprise of exploring some of the random sonic worlds that are born from different bowings, strikes and hits on the waterphone.

Different velocities trigger different timbres, samples and combinations. Some are predictable, some surprising. Please see the video demos [below]

Uncharted Waters is exclusively available through Richard Waters’ website: www.waterphone.com. This introductory offer is a steal at $15 for the complete downloadable instrument."

"This is a live, real-time performance sampler based on samples made with the blessing of Richard Waters, the inventor of the Waterphone. Samples are mapped to a keyboard in a to give the "feel" of actually playing a waterphone. Velocity, repeated key strokes, aftertouch and mowheel all interact for a surprising and inspiring timbral journey for the sonically curious. This audio file was performed in a single pass without editing or external effects. Original programming and design by Todd Barton and Joel Henigson. Enjoy!"

OBP TV Interview with Composer Todd Barton

via OBP

"He’s the man behind much of the music at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. And he says, it’s OK if you don’t even notice the music. Todd Barton’s goal is to affect the mood without being obvious."

Some synth spotting in an interview with Todd Barton aka vgermuse. You should recognize the name from numerous posts. Metasynth, the Waterphone, and a pocket theremenin get a mention along with various other instruments.

Todd is currently working on the premiere of an adaptation of Akira Kurosawa's Throne of Blood in NYC by Ping Chong.

"A track from my 1983 score for the stage production of Dracula. Scored for two sting quartets (the KRONOS Quartet), JP-8 synthesizer, Roland MC-202, Wulitzer electric piano, waterphone and grand pianos.
This is an excerpt from a 12 minute piece.
For the synthgeeks, the multiple MC-202 sequences were tape-synced and all JP-8 tracks were individually performed onto an old Tascam 1/2" eight-track tape deck."

See the Halloween label below for more. BTW, if you have anything you want to send in for the holidays, send it to matrixsynth at gmail.com. The general rule for posts is they have to demo specific synths you can identify, but for holiday posts I'll typically make the exception as long as they are remotely synth related.

Matris Terra Ultionis

If you have been following this site over the past couple of months you should be familiar with the work of Richard Lainhart and Todd Barton (vgermuse). You will recall the Buchla 200e compositions from Richard posted here and the Akai EVI compositions from Todd posted here. You might also recall daddio of Tapewarm from these posts.

After hearing the brilliant compositions by Richard and Todd, Daddio contacted them about creating a new composition featuring theirs. They gave him the ok and Matris Terra Ultionis is the result. You can listen it here.

part one features:
metaliton, buchla2Crop, eviExtended, and buchlaStormBirds.
mixed with my WarStorm samples and an old waterphone recording

part two:
Thonk and SlowEvolution
w/more WarStorm samples and Launch

part three:
Orchestra of the Damned, SpaceMetal, buchlaDemo2, buchlaDrumSolo, eviSerge and eviSerge2
yet more from Warstorm (lol) and my My Hydrogen Gas Tank

Regarding the sources of the compositions:
"Thonk and Orchestra of the Damned are from Richard.
200e/Haken continuum

WarStorm, Launch and My Hydrogen Gas Tank are my compositions.
I used a Doepfer modular, twin Kaoss pads and a waterphone along with a boatload of samples.

All other files are Todd's: metaliton, buchla2Crop, eviExtended, and buchlaStormBirds, SpaceMetal, buchlaDemo2, buchlaDrumSolo, eviSerge and eviSerge2.
evi, buchla, serge"

Waterphone-Easel Texture i

via MATRIXSYNTH Member, Todd Barton: "I'm really stoked about the new Richard Water's waterphones being loving made by Brooks Hubbert! He has totally channeled Richard's energy, spirit and further evolved the waterphone. I will make a proper demo of just the waterphone soon, but today I played live over a looped sonic bed of Buchla Music Easel analog synth textures."
