Mint ARP 2500 Synthesizer for Sale and Videos

via Steve: "This is a once in a lifetime chance to own an Arp 2500 without breaking the bank to do it. The eBay listing tells the whole story- this Arp 2500 was purchased during ARP's bankruptcy auction, on site at ARP, by my friend Larry O. The modules were, and remained, in plastic wrap with tags right off the QA line. He recently assembled them into a 'mini' Arp 2500 system built into a cabinet from the QA dept of ARP.

It was fully serviced by Phil at CMS just now and is on eBay.

You will probably never, ever, see such a pristine and AFFORDABLE Arp 2500 for sale... Get it before its gone!"

via this auction:
"The Who’s Pete Townshend and Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page were only two of the devotees of this legendary instrument. Hell, it was the ARP 2500 that was used to call to the aliens in “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”!

The History
This extremely rare and primo system is the last of more than 100 modules and eight cabinets I personally purchased from the auction at the ARP factory when the company went out of business back in 1981. These modules were still wrapped in plastic with QA tags attached when I got them. (See recent photo of QA tags below.) They have seen very little use over the last 30 years (the QA tags are stamped with 1975 dates).

The cabinet resided in ARP’s Engineering Department, where it was used for prototyping new modules. The original serial number tag identifies it as being the 45th cabinet made in 1970 (70-045). Five of the modules and the cabinet sport ARP’s earliest logo (the “squishy lines”), while the rest have the “treble clef” logo.

Vintage? Oh yeah.
Needless to say, I cherry-picked a beautiful configuration to keep as my final remnant: four VCOs, two VCFs, two VCAs, four envelope generators, sample/hold, noise generators.

For the full auction story and a listening tour of this instrument, copy and paste these links to see my YouTube videos [below]

The Modules
This is one sweeeeet system, the likes of which you are not likely to see again. It’s the real deal:
1004-T Oscillator (mixable waveform)
1023 Dual Oscillator
1045 Voltage-Controlled Voice (this thing is The S**t)
1036 Dual Sample & Hold/Random Voltage
1003 Dual EG
1006 Filtamp
1016 Dual Noise

Click “Buy It Now” and get an additional 1006 Filtamp, also just back from service by CMS!

The Icing on the Cake
Included are an original, print Owner’s Manual, a CD containing PDFs of all the circuits and parts (though you really should have Phil do any work on it), and a cabinet extension cable.

On request I can provide an Excel doc containing The Gory Details: serial numbers, CMS service specifics, patching details for the outer slots."

Sold For: US $12,000.00

Blue Clavia/Nord Emu E-drum Drum Synth

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Emu E-drum Drum Synth, Clavia Edrum, with 4 8-bit Drum Cartridges

Up for auction is a vintage 80s Emu E-drum in working condition and includes 4 Emu/Clavia 8-bit E-drum cartridges (names of cartridges below), and original mounting hardware.

The E-drum was actually developed by Clavia DMI in Sweden, and provided drummers with a single, touch-sensitive pad drum module that offered 40dB of volume range with internal sounds generated from a removable cartridge (containing from one to four 8-bit samples on a 16kB EPROM). A variety of different sound cartridges could be purchased and interchanged in the E-drum, and an optional hardware assembly allowed modular construction of entire drum kits.

This Emu E-drum includes a pitch control, which tunes the pitch either up, down, or no effect (middle position). There is also a Decay control for the triggered 8-bit sound as well as a very warm sounding Treble and Bass controls. The E-drum can be triggered by striking the rubber head on the drum or providing a ¼” triggered input. The E-drum can be powered by two 9v batteries (internal), or can be powered by an 18v DC adapter with an 1/8” plug.

The Emu E-drum in this auction is confirmed working; trigger drum pad, knobs, and output are all confirmed working properly. Output is strong and clean and can be heard in the demo mp3 posted in the link below.

4 Emu E-Drum/Clavia Original Cartridges are included with the Emu E-drum in this auction:

· Grand Piano
· Tom 1
· Rototom 2
· Marimba

VEMIA Auction Nov 4

Via Peter Forrest. Note the VEMIA auction usually has some pretty interesting stuff. Last year some gear from Brian Eno including his DX7 were included. Definitely worth taking a peak. Here are some previous posts mentioning VEMIA.

"Next VEMIA auction has some good stuff coming, including 22 lots (actually probably nearer 40 or 50 lots) starting at 22 uk pounds with no reserve.

Some items are already up online at www.spheremusic.com

They include an ARP 2600 (but that's already had some keen bidding); an Obie 4-voice (at 110 pounds at the moment); some Metasonix items - two already listed; and, to come, a Moog Taurus, a MIDI'd Odyssey module, and quite a few other interesting pieces.

No hidden reserve on anything in the auction - one bid gets it if no-one bids higher. 10% buyer's premium, but you get personal service and protection for that, plus the ability to pay in a variety of ways for free. Auction ends Saturday Nov 11.

Thanks! Peter Forrest"

ARP Rhodes Chroma for Auction

Title link takes you to shots pulled from this auction. Update: Peter originally had this listed as one of the first 50 by Phillip Dodd's ARP team. It turns out it was not.

Updated description:
"NB I've just had an authoritative source tell me that my naive and un-researched belief that 2101 would be the first run (since other runs were 2102, 2103, 2104...) could well be complete bollocks. I am researching this now and will make changes in the listing as soon as I know more.

This particular machine sounds totally gorgeous - rich, powerful, and all of course controlled by one of the best keyboards in the world. Wooden, beautifully weighted, and much nicer than the CS-80. (Of course it doesn't have the rare optional polyphonic aftertouch sensor, and it would be lovely to know if those are possible to find or reproduce.)

It has been fully serviced within the last 8 weeks by Roy Paynter, who is the UK's number one Chroma service guy, and universally recommended. He has a Chroma permanently in his workshop as a test-bed, and knows the machines inside out. His servicing warranty is three months, so there will be ample time for you to check the Chroma out within the warranty period.

This machine is European voltage. It was originally bought by Ken Freeman, famous inventor of the String Machine, who used it extensively in his music. It still has his little 'Ken' sticker on it. He eventually sold it in 1994 at the first VEMIA auction, where it was bought for £2000 by Global Communications (Mark Pritchard and Tom Middleton).

They then used it in their music for years, but Mark has now emigrated to Australia, and the Chroma was one thing that he couldn't fit into his suitcase.

It is in decent cosmetic condition - see the photos. A very reasonable 7/10, with some little knocks to the wood, and a few minor blemishes. The wood could easily be re-finished for certain, as it's solid..... but who knows if that's the right thing to do?

It works beautifully, and has the original factory presets loaded. Some of these are maybe a bit dated, and some definitely need a reasonable velocity to sound at all - unlike a standard plastic synth keyboard, this one has to be played like a piano, and just like a piano if you put your finger on a key and press slowly no sound will come out - but most are brilliant - powerful, full, meaty, smooth... altogether wonderful.

One of the nice things about this machine is that it comes with all the original literature - the Programming Manual, Performance Manual, Interface Manual, fold-out four side parameter map, and, best of all, the original preliminary Service Manual, complete with all schematics with ARP logos.

It has its original flight-case, which is in good condition except for the foam, which has started to deteriorate. We will cover ithe Chroma in plastic and pack it in polystyrene and bubble-wrap inside the flightcase, or pack it perfectly safely in polystyrene inside a carton without the flightcase, at the buyer's choice.

This is an absolute pleasure to play, and it would be a great thing to own.

For more information about Chromas generally, please check out the excellent rhodeschroma.com.

This machine isn't cheap, but it is very very special, and if you value beautiful keyboard feel and great rich analogue sounds you will love it.

I run the VEMIA online auction (Vintage Electric Musical Instrument Auctions). But the owner needs to sell now.... so here this is on eBay. (The next VEMIA auction isn't until November 4-11.) We are expert shippers at decent prices - please look at my feedback.

I also write the A-Z of Analogue Synthesisers books."

The Synth World's Dumbest Criminal

This has to be the funniest shit I've ever seen. Huppo put his Nord Modular up on the bay two weeks ago. Some guy just put up his own auction, but get this. Not only did he copy huppo's auction but he actually pointed to the pics on huppo's server. So what did huppo do? He updated the pics of course.

"Hey Matrix,

This is Huppo from VSE. I put up a post in the Gear for
Sale section regarding an ebay auction I found this morning.
You might be amused by the auction.

In short, my own Nord Modular auction from a couple weeks
ago was lifted word for word and picture for picture by some
dirtbag. Only he left the links to the pictures on my
webserver! How thoughtful of him to give me permission to
change "his" listing at will. :o)

love your blog. its a daily stop. Thanks!

~huppo"

Thank you huppo! This is absolutely hillarious!
Shots saved for posterity; title link takes you to them.

MFB SEQ-01 Drum Sequencer & Eurorack Synthesizer Drum Modules

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
MFB SEQ-01 Drum Sequencer via this auction

"Complementing MFBs new DRUM-modules, MFB announces SEQ-1. A trigger-sequencer specialized on creating rhythmic patterns.

SEQ-01 allows to build 16 patterns each consisting of up to 32 steps. All patterns can be saved and consist of 12 tracks.

Patterns offer switchable A/B-parts that can also be used as 2-bar-patterns.

Each step of the 12 tracks can be programmed in one out of three accent values.

„Pattern +“ and „Pattern –“ inputs allow switching to adjacent pattern by trigger signals.

Start/stop and tempo (Clock) can be accessed directly on the module but also be controlled through external signals.

Vice versa, the SEQ-1’s clock output and start and stop functions can be used to control other modules.

RESET allows resetting the selected sequence back to step 1.

SEQ-01 is not only useful to control drum and percussive sounds. Modular synthesizers offer lots of options for trigger-based control like sample ?& hold, switches, clock-dividing, sequencers, logic modules, envelopes and more.

An example: while standard S?&H or clock divider modules are usually fed by a linear clock, the SEQ-1 turn this into rhythmic triggering!

And because the SEQ-1 offers 12 trigger outputs you will surely have some spare outputs for special purposes beside triggering your drum-modules."

MFB Drum-04 Bass Drum Eurorack Synthesizer Module via this auction

"The DRUM-04 module is based upon the circuit used in the MFB-503. It offers a tight bass drum that is adjustable over a wide range in both pitch and decay.

Due to the construction of DRUM-04 as a modular component, the bass drum’s sound parameters Attack, Decay, Tune and Pitch can be addressed through CV-signals from envelopes, LFOs sequencers etc.

Attack adds a short impulse to the sound. By mixing this with the main bass drum sound, the result offers added percussiveness.

Decay controls the release length of the sound. The decay can last up to 2 seconds.

Tune sets the bass drum’s basic pitch between approximately 30 Hz and 100 Hz.

Pitch controls the duration of a applied pitch modulation. The depth of this modulation is fixed.

Drive defines the amount of overdrive applied to the bass drum.

Noise adds a variable amount of noise to the sound.

The module accepts different trigger signal types. These signals do not necessarily need to be analogue or digital triggers. You may also use drum pads, piezo-pickups or even dynamic microphones. Use the sensitivity control to adapt for the input signal. Dynamic trigger signals will not only affect the volume but also attack, decay and pitch."

MFB Drum-05 Snare Drum Eurorack Synthesizer Module via this auction

"Analog snare drum module. The circuitry is from the snare drum of MFBs 503 drum computer but it has been modified and extended with CV inputs for controlling parameters.

- Snap is the decy time of the noise that can be up to 2 seconds.
- Decay controls the tonal decay time of the two oscillators that can range up to one second.
- Tune is used to set the general tunig of the snare drum. Frequency range from approx. 100 to 400 Hz.
- Pitch controls the length of the pitch bend, while the modulation depth is fixed.
- with D-Tune you can detune the two oscillators of the snare
- Noise adds a analog noise to the sound to emulate the snare wires

The snare drum module can be triggered with different signals. This doesn´t have to be an analog or digital trigger signal; you can also use drum pads, piezos or dynamic microphones. You can control the input sensitivity with the Sens parameter. When using dynamic triggers, not only the volume will be affected but also snap, decay and pitch!"

MFB Drum-07 HiHat / Cymbol Eurorack Synthesizer Module via this auction

"Analog drum module for creating HiHat (open and closed) and cymbal sounds. The circuitry is based on the hi hat-section of MFB´s 522 but instead of white noise a "metallic" mix of oscillator sounds is used.

Following parameters can be edited: tune (for all three instruments), decay of open hi hat, decay of closed hi hat, decay of cymbal, tone of cymbal.

Additionally the decays of cymbals and the hihats can be controlled by voltages.

All CV inputs have attenuators. The trigger inputs of the thre instruments are equipped with sensitivity controls.

A special feature of the cymbal sound is the Tone-Input which gives you the possibility to use external sounds instead of the internal square wave generators."

MFB Drum-08 Clap Eurorack Synthesizer Module via this auction

"The Drum-08 is MFB´s new module for generating analog clap drum sounds. Due to the two audio output you can use it in stereo, too.

Drum-08´s circuitry is based on the clap of MFB´s own 522 but it has more parameters: Reverb (decay of noise), Claps (number of claps), Space (distance between claps), Decay and basis (stereo width of the signal).

Additionally there are CV inputs for the claps, space and decay parameters. The trigger input has a sensitivity control."

Martin Gore Analogue Solutions Leipzig-S Analogue Synthesizer Sequencer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction
See the note on Martin Gore below.

"This is the Analogue Solutions Leipzig-S synthesizer/sequencer. There are two VCOs with glide and SubVCOs and a noise mixer which is great for percussion. The filter is a warm fat self oscillating 24db Moog Style with manual control over freq & resonance with keyboard tracking and env 1 or 2 knob. There is a mixer that will allow you to process external sounds. The modulation section has some really cool cross-modulation options for VCO 1&2 plus the filter. The sequencer is where the magic happens and its a true analogue 8 step sequencer with tons of clocking options from the internal LFO to VCO2, plus MIDI Sync and MIDI-CV2, accent and MIDI Key. The envelopes can get really snappy which makes for great percussion and they have a little room on the end for Basses and Leads, both Envelopes can be triggered from MIDI with the flip of a switch. The sequencer can be triggered from 1,2 or both or accent. The analogue VCA can be triggered from Envelope 1 or two, Gate or Thru.

This synthesizer also has some great history. It was used by Martin Gore, who is a member of Depeche Mode. I have photos of him with the synthesizer, but they will not be included in the auction and they are only available for viewing upon request. I dont expect this to drive the auction, but its a pretty cool fact and may add some inspiration to your musical creation."  You can see a pic of Martin Gore and the Leipzig-S here.  I have no idea if this is the same one.  The description above comes from the auction.

The Sonica with Serge Oscillator

Remember The Sonica? Looks like one is up for auction. Title link takes you to the shots.

Note this one and the Black Coffee below is a bit of a fund raiser.

"Up for auction here is the very rare Frank Eventoff Sonica. It's a one oscillator analog synth built into a wood guitar shaped controller. The oscillator was built by Serge electronics. Yes the same who build high end modular synths! It has its own speaker and runs on a regular 9v battery. It's about 18" long. It's number 276 out of 650. With this instrument you are officially the King or Queen of the hippie synth nerds (certificate not included).

Here's a link to the entertaining history of the Sonica.

This unit for auction is in very good shape cosmetically and works 100%. However because of the age of the electronics, it's being sold as-is. I already fixed a bad solder joint on the fretboard. You will probably have to do the same some time in the future. The fretboard flexes slightly even with a light touch. Solder joints don't like flexing. If the Sonica sounds continuously without you touching it, heat up the solder joints on the fret board and it will fix it. It's just the way the Sonica is designed. At least I told you about it and how to fix it, you'll notice no other sellers of Sonicas mentioned it. Also, some of what look like scratches in the pics are just reflections from the light.

You get the Sonica, its custom case, instruction manual and blank warranty card.

Sorry about the watermarking on the photos below, it's a necessity now because of scammers that ebay seems to tolerate.

So you can rationalize your gear lust: you're helping me pay to get rid of a brain tumor. You're not a gearhead, you're a humanitarian!"

Note I usually shy away from posting images with watermarks. If you have an auction with great shots and watermarks and you are wondering why I haven't posted it, that's probably why. Just shoot me an email and I'll post it. BTW, I'll post anything on Matrixsynth-b regardless of the shots, so feel free to send them in.

MOOG Liberation Funds Syntar

images via this auction.
Here's an interesting auction. A MOOG Liberation being sold to fund a Syntar. Note the Syntar actually predated the MOOG Liberation as the first keytar ever, a interesting bit of synth history. The Syntar featured an amazingly expressive control interface on the neck that has yet to be reproduced and it did sound quite nice. You can read more about the Syntar on Carbon111's excellent Syntar Page as well as this interview here on MATRIXSYNTH.

It's worth noting that the person behind the Syntar was George Mattson who is currently the man behind the new Mattson Mini Modular.

As for this Liberation, here are the details from the auction:
"# This auction is only for a complete MOOG Liberation Analogue Synthesizer
# In good physical and playing condition with checking and dents in the wood
# Please click on the images below to see larger photos to inspect physical condition
# NEW chipforbrains slider caps
# NEW chipforbrains sliders installed by analogsynthservice.com
# Foam sheet over PCB has been removed and PCB has been cleaned!
# Rackmountable power/CV unit
# Control Cable has not nicks or cuts
# Hardshell carrying case
# Print outs of the owners and service manuals
# Shipping is $50 in the USA, $150 elsewhere
# Interested? All offers will be considered. The chipforbrains sliders are meant to be drop in replacements. However CY has stated that some Liberations will behave slightly differently in the Envelope Generators. If you're familiar with the Rogue or the Liberation, you will notice a difference in the behavior.

I am selling my Moog Liberation because I asked George Mattson to build me one of his unfinished SYNTARs that has sat idle nearly 30 years. As you can imagine it took quite a bit of money to convince him to dust off the SYNTAR and continue working on it. Subsequent interest in the SYNTAR has brought along his latest project: the Mattson Mini Modular .. I order two populated cabinets, so you can see, I need to LIBERATE myself of this Moog to pay Mr. Mattson."

Admin: BINs for Ebay Auctions

Update: I'm finding some of the BINs to not accurately reflect what items are really worth for obvious reasons. BINs are what people would like in an ideal situation and can thus be inflated. I think it's more valuable to capture what the item actually went for. That said, I'll start updating old auction posts with what they actually sold for as I have time.

Old post:
Just a heads up. Moving forward, you'll notice BINs (Buy it Now) prices listed in auction posts for any auction that has one listed. My goal for this site has always been long term, meaning we can look back in time and see what was happening in the world of synths years and decades from now. Capturing the BINs will serve has a historical record of what people were listing their synths for over time. I'll use the format of BIN: price so you can search for synth BINs easily, for example Minimoog BIN: will bring up all auction post mentioning Minimoog and a BIN, except for this post as well of course. :) BTW, if I forget a BIN, let me know and I will add it. Note this applies to MATRIXSYNTH-B as well.

Severely Weathered / Neglected Waldorf Q, Alesis Andromeda A6, & Ensoniq Fizmo

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

Waldorf Q via this auction

Alesis Andromeda via this auction

Ensoniq Fizmo via this auction

No mention what happened to them, but if I had to guess on the Waldorf Q, the Nextel paint got sticky and someone attempted the talcum powder fix. Apparently you can coat stick plastics with talcum power and then give them a light wipe to clean any excess off. The silo knobs likely broke apart, which actually happened to me on my XTk as you can see here.

That said it looks like a job gone horribly wrong. I was going to say the A6 and Fizmo faired better, but check out the cigarette stains on the keys, dirt on the surface, and missing knobs. They look like they've been stored in an outdoor shed. The listings state they are estate sales. There are other synths listed including an EMU PK-6 Proteus keyboard, XK-6 Extreme Keys, Proteus 2000 rack synth, and two Yamaha EX5s. On the non synth front there's a Porsche steering wheel for anyone interested! Click on "See other items" to right of the seller's name after click any of the three auction links above.

Hartmann NEURON Survival Kit : Motherboard + 250GB HD

via this auction
" This Kit includes :
* One drop in replacement motherboard
* A new pristine Hard Drive breed ! This is your rare chances to get, for this powerful machine, an extended 250GB version of the original Hard Drive.

Original Hard Drives found in the NEURON were usually within the range of 20GB minimum up to 80GB maximum in some occasion. The provided Hard Drive in this auction is resulting of my intensive works to extend the last Linux partition while keeping all the original linux operating system information safe. The resulting Hard Drive is a 250GB unit from Western Digital, well know for it's silent and cool operation.

As a consequence, the available space for all your Models and Sounds comes up to 230GB. Here this noticeable improvement will relatively cost you as much as some 80GB hard drive clones that were sold here on ebay some months ago. Keep in mind that this is more than just a clone : All of the original NEURON hard drive has been analysed in details such as the Boot records (Mater and Extended ones) and allmost of the original partitions in the respect of the original information close to the byte ! Such an evolution could not be affordable using standard tools such as driveimage, partition magic, nor Acronis, but thanks to my own Linux know how.

Consequently, this auction is for you the occasion to provide your NEURON with a large significant space for your creation, models and sounds, but also the occasion to insure of a second 'Life' for your machine ! : NEURON users community has reported some of the original Hartmann motherboards going dead because a batch of bad components described as the 'Capacitors Plague' . It causes (we will see further occurences of this problem in the future, so it may hit your own neuron motherboard also....) a chemical decay of some of the inner PCB layers. A a consequence, I strived until I found out The motherboard type that fits exactly as the original design as well as its respective shape factor. This new motherboard will run exactly as your previous board. This new board may help you in fixing your Neuron if it's currently faulty, or represents a backup for the future. Keep your Ram, your processor, your Fan as they are since all of them will fit with this new board. Hence, No RAM or Processor upgrade of any sort on your side is needed. The provided motherboard in this auction has been tested and validated within the NEURON Synthesizer : It will run exactly as the original motherboard design (which was the Shuttle Spacewalker MV25). BIOS and Jumpers configuration have both been entirely pre-configured.

> It's a 'plug and play' combo , as soon as it reaches your door.

The hardware is provided with some instructions about how to install the motheraboard, what to connect and where, etc. The extended 250GB hard drive comes into your NEURON synthesizer as was your original drive the first day in, with ModelSet v4 , SoundSet v4 and OS 1.5 all installed."
